Woman's arms wrapped around the little girl tightly, her hands buried in the waterfall of her golden hair. "I love you." The words were ghost of a whisper.

Natalie pulled back from her slightly and gazed into woman's clear sapphire eyes, searching her face. A long sigh escaped her. Puzzled, Mary stroked the line of her chin. "What is it?"

"You say you love me... but why?" Her blonde brows furrowed into a vee. I mean... what's changed? Why do you love me? Is it because of something that happened 1000 years ago? Because I want our love to be something we make for ourselves... now?" She buried her head in her chest. "Am I making any sense?"

Mary held the small girl tighter and bit her lip. "I feel... like I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I don't just love you because of events that happened a millenium ago."

"Then why?"

"I love you because you're beautiful to me, because you're a little girl, because you just turned eleven. I love you for your kindess and your courage... I think I always have, even though I didn't show it."  She smiled and tenderly kissed her lips. "I'm not used to having feelings, you know. When I was orphaned, I learned not to let my emotions show, to keep them hidden so the pain wouldn't be so hard to bear." Her silence prompted Mary to speak again. "When I first saw you, I thought you were just any ordinary pre-teen girl... but then I realized you are much, much more... you are a light and life, you are happiness... Whenever I was around you, I could feel that radiating from you...and it scared me."

They stood in silence for a moment, simply content to be in each other's arms. Then Natalie shivered.

"Mary... I'm scared. What if you find another girl? What if she... what if you..."

"Shhhh." Natalie was cut off when Mary covered her glossy lips in a gentle kiss. "I will never leave you, my love. I don't want another girl when I have you." She could see her squeezed her eyes shut as a crystal tear slowly droped down her face.

"Don't cry, little one. Don't ever say I'll leave you," she said with quiet patience. "We will never separate... I don't care if I have to face a thousand deaths for you..." her voice was shaky and Natalie's breath caught in her throat.

"Just hold me," she whispered.

"Forever."
