You stand before me in your body of melting honey,
the sea's salt taste against your smooth skin,
the sea's colour stored -- for today -- in your eyes,
the sunlight plaited into your hair.
Without ceremony you have shed
those last bothersome clothes,
and shamelessly revealed the fleshy little shell
with its double fold, inward to the small slot
that -- for today -- denies all entrance,
now still hairless and oyster pink until, at thirteen,
the sea will flood grey into your clear eyes.
At thirteen you will search -- keenly and anxiously --
for a forbidden pearl.
This sea and naked sun ?
You will never know these again, not completely,
not before another heat scorches you - like the final
white wick against the holder.
