Last night
whenever I brushed my cheek
softly
against yours, little girl
to comment above the
throbbing of your heart,
you smelt so wonderful
so childlike,
my child.
And I loved the way you
turned your head
and opened your lips
shyly
against my mouth,
as I breathed my words of love
into it.
I realise, only now
in retrospect,
that I wanted you
however small,
however young
to kiss you
and hold you in my arms
until you fell asleep
with smile burning bright
on your little face.
