The Challenge Universe 0/4: Background, Writer's Guide and Other Notes

The Challenge Universe Overview:
---

How did 'The Challenge Universe' start?

How it started is an easy question to answer. Someone on the net
sent me a pencil sketch of a horse beckoning. Now, you have to realize
my main animals of interest are canines. I do enjoy watching horses
but they don't have the same impact as dogs do. As a rule anyway.

Two poems, a very short short story and a longer work later, I had
most of the impact of that sketch out of my system. To say it inspired
something in me is understating the impact a bit.

Thinking back, 'The Challenge' (since renamed to 'Discovery'), was
originally written to express a lot of my feelings about how we treat
our planet. A sort of 'neighbors, we need to rethink our attitudes'
type of story. I can't tell you at this point in time if I ever
intended to work in any sort of references to zoophilia. I don't think
I was planning that but I can't be certain.

Shortly after I had written my first draft of 'Discovery', a
person calling himself 'Equine' sent me a little story called 'My
Story'.

His concepts were very similar to mine in many places. So much so,
that I asked for permission to place a story of my own there. We spent
time in email discussing this new world of his. I wanted to be sure I
stayed within his ideas.

Pack-Brother and its sequel were the results.

We posted our stories to alt.sex.bestiality in December of 1995.

I know in my case, I figured mine to go the way of all stories
posted there. If I was fortunate, one or two people would comment and
that would be it.

Much to my surprise and shock, something else happened.

Not only did people rave over the stories (mine and Equine's),
some people wanted to write stories of their own in this world.

I was calling this 'universe' 'Equine's World' in recognition of
the person who invented it. The name stuck. Other stories were written
and posted.

I kept writing stories placed there.

My own feelings at the time were that 'Equine's World' was the
zoophile's equivalent of Star Trek. It was a shared reality that drew
people in. I can't speak for the other writers but in my case, people
were telling me that EW 'felt' real. It felt like it tried to capture
how zoos feel about themselves and their partners.

OK, but that doesn't explain how the 'Challenge Universe' came
about.

It wasn't that long before I realized I had written as much placed
there as all the other authors *combined*.

Eventually, to avoid the chance of my work 'taking over', I
decided to split my stories off into their own, slightly different
reality. By that time, I had some ideas I wanted to explore that
weren't fully compatible with the original concepts.

So, there you have it. 'The Challenge Universe' just sort of grew
over time. It is still growing. Currently, (As of August 4, 1999),
there are 23 stories, 5 poems, 2 guides and a timeline posted. I have
two stories in progress and 4 more planned. There will probably be
others planned as I find 'gaps' that need filling or I think of
something I want to explore.

The stories have not been written in the order they should be
read. Some time in the future, I will try to reconstruct the order
they were written in. If you wish, think of this as a research
project. As each 'fragment' is discovered, it is fitted into a
developing picture of the history of this world.

How serious am I about this series? Well, it has become large
enough that I started using some family tree software to record and
track all the relationships involved. Over time, I will be building a
database that has listings of all the family and inter-species
relationships. It's not unusual for me to reread some of the stories
so that I have things fresh in my mind when I work on a new story. I
can't predict how often I will write here but I will be continuing for
a while yet.

The World Views - Terra One
---

Simply put, Terra One is Earth.

When we meet Allister Cassidy, it is a predisaster Earth. There is
a heightened awareness of the potential ecological problems but for
most people, it is something nebulous and 'not in my lifetime' or
'nothing I do can really make a difference' attitudes prevail.

In 'Discovery', there is a tantalizing glimpse of a newer
awareness of the need to recycle rather than continue to throw things
away. In some places, such as where Allister lives and does his
research, entire communities have an economy that emphasizes recycling
and the concept of people controlling technology rather than using
technology because it is there.

The scientific community is open to and accepts there are some
things they cannot 'prove' or measure. Telepathy is considered to
exist (as uncommon as it is). Empathy is a skill that is well known
and even encouraged in some scientific fields. Due to an unusual turn
of events in the past, many of what we know of as 'ecological' fields
of study openly admit to the human element in their studies and
perceptions. These fields in particular produce what some in our world
would call 'faith holders'.

One person summed up things by saying 'Perception is reality.'
It's a tricky concept and during Allister's time, few people outside
specialized fields have any sort of 'true' grasp of what is meant by
that simple statement when used in a scientific context.

In a rather ironic (to some) twist of circumstances, Allister, not
a sexual zoophile, founds a research organization whose most advanced
researchers and field agents are both emotional and sexual zoophiles.

Within this zoophilic context, an emphasis is also placed on
social skills. Members are independent and their private lives and
sexual preferences are theirs. Still, they are not allowed to withdraw
from all contact with human cultures. The opposite is true. Their
primary job is to find solutions to the increasing ecological problems
and assist the people of the world in implementing those changes. Many
view themselves as 'Ambassadors of Awareness'. As such, they are not
flagrantly open about their lifestyles nor do they emphasize its role
in the upper levels of the institute.

During what are later called 'The Mutagenic Plague Years',
Allister's institute and others like it become cross-cultural centers
coordinating the recovery efforts of a devastated Earth.

After Allister and Wind-Rider met each other and prior to 'The
Plague Years', Allister quietly pushed for studies that would alter
selected species so they would become 'companions' to supplement their
human partners. He felt strongly that humans needed this interaction
with other aware beings who could also communicate with them.

As a result of this, over time, alterations were made to
gregarious species such as wolves, equines, orcas, dolphins and
canines. This genetic tinkering eventually led to the self-sustaining
populations we meet in later years.

Other organizations modified different species such as various of
the large felines and even smaller species were tinkered with. Many of
these modifications were unsuccessful and allowed to die out.

Man also modified mankind. Allister, who somehow as a result of
his teaming with Wind-Rider became, as far as he or anyone knows,
functionally immortal, is an unmodified human. Many other bloodlines
remain 'pure' with the exception of being given a higher resistance to
infection and active cancer defenses.

There is a theory that in some cases, a human-animal team creates
a resonance of some sort that acts to sustain their lives and even
defeat the normal aging processes. Even in the times we see here,
nobody knows the reasons some live longer while others do not.

Individual lifespans vary of course but within that, the average
person can expect to live for about 150 years. In general, people are
productive throughout their lifespan and it is not unusual for a
person to have had two or more fields of study.

Sexually, men remain fertile throughout the life. Women have the
choice of allowing menopause at about age 50 or, if they wish, they
may take steps to postpone or eliminate it entirely.

With the increased lifespan there is a marked decrease in
offspring produced. With the availability of options that allow sex
without risk of pregnancy, most people have a more relaxed and
accepting attitude about sex not done for reproductive purposes.

The 'revolution' started by the internet has run its course and
people are used to and generally accepting of the variety of
lifestyles practiced world wide.

With various species able to communicate directly with humans,
bestiality is now accepted as a reality that will never be totally
eliminated. Further, in cases where there is doubt, a telepathic or
speech capable member of that species is called in to discover the
actual situation.
======

    The World Views - Mind-Home
---

    Where do I start?

Terra One, after it realizes it managed to survive a major
ecological crisis, decides to plan and settle colonies on planets
orbiting other stars. The reasoning is simple. People hope to
successfully transplant various combinations of species so that should
Earth perish, something of its biodiversity will survive. As well,
this colonies will serve as reservoirs in case there is need to
rebuild Earth again.

With this goal in mind, various organizations are selected and
assisted in colonization attempts.

Probes are sent out and the results of these surveys are carefully
studied.

Planets are carefully chosen so that whatever is brought in will
have as little impact on the current biosphere

Allister's Institute is one of the organizations chosen to set up
a colonization plan. At the time this happens, 'World-Walking' amongst
the various alternate time lines is all that is known by his people.
Few are capable of this. As a result, the colonization trip is assumed
to be one way or at the very least, few will live long enough to be
able to go and then later return.
======

A brief guide to Mind Home (Equine's World in the original shared
universe)
---

    History:

It is a colony settled from Earth. Almost all of the animals were
imported from Earth in an attempt to make sure they survived. At the
time it was originally settled, Earth was suffering an ecological
crisis. It is unknown if Earth would survive with its bio diversity
intact. Thus the colonization efforts. On this world, Horses, Canines
(domestic and wild), Dolphins and Orcas were genetically modified for
telepathic linkages with humans. These five groups of animals, in
partnership with humans, would become the guardians of the ecological
balance. That it has survived as a viable colony for many hundreds of
years is testimony that the genetic engineering of the time and
careful planning were very well done.

It has retained a very high standard of technology and has never
suffered a regression. Evidence suggests that research continues
everywhere but that the guardian groups maintain their own research
facilities. Much of what they have developed has become widely used by
everyone. Unknown is just how much of their technology has been
released for general usage. It is known that they sometimes use things
in the field that are superior to what the general population uses.

Essentially though the basic level of technology has been stable
for many centuries. What changes there are have been towards more
efficient usage and less environmental impact.
---

New research has revealed the following information.

Not all animals brought to this world were enhanced for telepathic
linkages. There has been interbreeding and some mutations have
occurred. Still, the basic bloodlines for all Guardian animals
(general term for any member of a telepathic team, animal or human)
have remained fairly pure. Out crossing has happened and non-Guardian
teams are known. Current theory favors the idea that there is an
unknown number of animals in society at large with the genetic
capability of forming telepathic linkages. This is assumed to be so
that new recruits can be discovered.
---

    The Telepathic Linkages:

It is unknown just what reasoning made the gene-engineers opt for
a sexual trigger for human/guardian-species telepathy. Theories
abound, but nothing is certain. The generally accepted theory is that
anyone partnered into a guardian role with one of the guardian species
MUST display a deep empathy and caring for beings other than
themselves. The sexual/human mind set trigger is still not understood
by those not of the guardians. What is known for certain is that there
is something besides sex that triggers human telepathy. Cases are
known where humans have had sexual contact with animals over an
extended period with no evidence of inter-species telepathy. Also
known is that some of the guardian animals will seek out a specific
person for partnering.

There are unconfirmed (by this author) statements by people who
have worked with guardian teams that there seem to be different forms
of telepathic contact within each guardian-species/human pairing.
Again, due to their reclusive natures and wide ranging duties, most of
the details remain known only to the guardians themselves.

Evidence suggests that within the guardian species, telepathy is
normal. Due to the reclusive natures of most guardians, it is unknown
at this time how much telepathic contact there is between the four
guardian species. What evidence is known, however, suggests that it is
rare.

Evidence also indicates that human/human telepathy is extremely
rare. Even among the guardian humans. Why this should be so in
societies whose very basis is telepathy is very puzzling. Again, there
are theories. None of which have enough supporters for this author to
repeat here.

Zoophilia is known and accepted. It is not discussed much, nor is
it generally encouraged in the cities and suburbs. Rurally, it is more
openly accepted and acknowledged. Generally, people are neutral or
accepting. It is accepted as normal for most if not all of the
guardian partnerships.
---

The Guardian Species: A brief overview.
---

    Equines:

Scouts teams are formed of a Equine/human pair. Observations seem
to indicate an Equine will choose their own partner. It is unknown
exactly how this choosing is done. See `My story' and `My Story 2'
elsewhere for some details based on biographies of specific teams.

Much research is ongoing in this field.
---

    Canids: Wolves

Theorists have suggested that human/wolf telepathy is an extension
of the well known pack bond. Wolves are thought to have had their own
form of telepathy on Earth long before they were engineered to the
present state.

Also well known is that some teams have been known to survive for
several centuries or longer. Since cloning is at best unreliable, it
is unknown just how this is accomplished. Some wolves have lived for
several human lifetimes (human life expectancy is about 150 years) and
been seen with many partners. Others are known which have spent their
entire known lives with one partner.

Noticed as well is the odd fact that in some cases, the death of a
partner is followed almost immediately by the death of the other
partner.

Known historical records produced by the Brethren include the
Pack-Brother and Greybeard fragments.

Known terms relating to wolves and humans:

Brethren - Their term for the wolf/human community
Pack-Mates - Humans who have teamed with wolves
Pack-Brother - Men who have partnered with wolves
Pack-Sister - Women who have partnered with wolves
Hunter teams - Combat experienced troubleshooters
---

    Canids: Dogs

Assumed to be similar to that of Wolves but with duties
concentrated in the populated areas. The Brethren have been known to
be called in for special duties on rare occasions. These duties are
generally performed by Hunter Teams.

Recovery of Cory/Stealth fragment in progress. (Historical note:
these are former partners of Greybeard and Karen. Evidence suggests
Cory eventually paired with Karen to produce line that led to main
human character in Pack-Brother fragments. Time between Greybeard and
Pack-Brother fragments still unknown.

New research and info: September 23, 1996 Companion - human or
canine member of a telepathic team. Companions - general term for any
canine/human team Protectors - Specific term generally used by members
of working teams. (Much is still being researched)
---

    Dolphins:

The dolphin/human telepathy is a joining of the chosen human to
the dolphin. In all known cases, the dolphin chooses the human. The
bond is a strong empathic/telepathic bond. The empathic bond is
usually established before vocal contact is made. This may come in the
form of dreams of other manifestations. The bond is then expanded to a
conscious telepathic communication, but no bond after this has taken
place, the sexual/total-telepathic bond soon follows. Afterwards, the
initiate pod member is then allowed into the pod group mind, much like
the pack awareness of the wolves. This bond is strong between all the
pod-members, but concentration is required for anything above empathy
for the other pod members. The bond-mate/bond-mate bond is much
stronger, and the empathic/telepathic bond is always in place. Also,
with these bonds, comes a heightened sense of awareness. The pod
bonding has sparked the phrase among the wave-riders, "When you bond
with a dolphin, you bond with the pod."

The wave-riders are primarily concerned with oceanic life and
ecological factors.

The personality of the wave-riders is said to mirror the mood and
health of their bonded protectors.

Also, due to the promiscuous nature of dolphins, there are rumors
of often held orgies between the pod-members. The bond-mates are often
invited to bring a change to the norm. The playful spirit of the
dolphins is well tempered with the stress and mind-set of humans.

Dolphins are often cursed with unusually short memories unless a
conditioned response is trained, but with the human bond partners, the
memories seem to be kept easier, and with more clarity, this has been
theorized to be that the human deals with the task of memories.
---

    Orcas:

Generally accepted to be similar to what is known of the dolphins
and wave-riders. However, no specific studies are in progress which
would confirm or disprove this theory.

    The Timeline and Other Information
---

This started out as a courtesy from email requests shortly after
it was obvious I would be writing a lot of stories in this world.
Since then, over the years, it has evolved into what follows. I'm
certain it will grow and change even more. I'm already using a couple
of genealogy programs to fully work out and track all the
relationships. For that aspect, someday there will be a gedcom file
available. All I ask is that nobody send it to any genealogy archives.
People might not appreciate seeing an archive with same-sex
partnerships and interspecies ones.

* * *

The approximate times involved (quick estimates)

    Allister and Wind-Rider meet - year -20
Realtime events in The Challenge - year 150
    Beginnings - year 500, EW year 1
    Greybeard/Cory-Stealth EW year 150
    Pack-Brother - EW year 270
Past Returns - EW year 700

    Fifth: The family relationships:

    Allister and Cheryl paired
    eventually giving us Karen

    Ward and Linda paired
Cheryl is their oldest daughter and first child
Cory is a direct descendant of Ward's

    Karen and Cory paired
eventually giving us Joseph, their great-grandson

Greybeard is 4th generation descended from Julie
    Smoke is Greybeard's daughter.

Jade is a son of Greybeard and Julie

    Stomper is descended from Wind-Rider.
---

    Notes:

Wind-Rider is from an alternate world-line.

Julie is a genetically engineered wolf who is also a mutant. The
engineering unexpectedly altered an unknown gene and she is capable of
using human speech. All speech capable wolves are descended from her.
The mutation is recessive so it was not until the altered gene was
isolated and a male wolf was genetically modified that speech capable
wolves became self-perpetuating.

Miscellaneous Notes and Thoughts
---

During the years I've worked in the Challenge Universe, I had
several web sites.

I've needed to write several intro pages, index pages and kept
notes to help me keep track of everything.

What follows, in this post, is an assorted collection of notes and
things used on the web sites.

None of this, except for the reading order list, is that
important.

I just thought you folks would appreciate another glimpse into my
mind, and a chance to see one way an author 'organizes' his thoughts.
    ====

Here is the site description that was on my site when I shut it
down:

    Warning!

The usual legal restrictions apply here. This is a site with adult
stories that sometimes depict sexual activities that may be illegal in
your area or may be illegal for someone of your age. If you shouldn't
be here, and you go past this point, it is your responsibility for
having done so, not mine.

If you came here to be offended, don't blame me or anyone else
when you are. You were given the chance to go somewhere else.

The views expressed in items posted do not always reflect my own
views.

The Challenge Universe has its own index page and links to
descriptions. There are telepathicaly linked humans and animals of
various species. Many of the interspecies relationships are zoosexual
in nature.
    =====

This is one of the descriptions I wrote for WB:
    ---

The Challenge Universe is what I consider my most important
collection of stories, poems and other notes.

It's still 'in progress', even though I haven't done much with it
for years.

What I've done is post ALL of it, completed stories and wip, plus
notes, to make sure it is out there somewhere other than only on my
hard drive and with my archivist, of course.

Plus, it's distinctive in one unique way and because of that, I
feel it should be freely available in its entirety:

It's the only series I have in which zoosexuality is totally
acceptable by not only the characters, but the culture they live in.

As such, it's the one thing most of my other zoosexual work isn't:
Pure, unalloyed zoosexual fantasy that explores a world I wish existed
in reality.

Read, or not, your choice of course.

When I came up with the following, I checked with one of my online
contacts and discovered that the idea isn't original. There were/are
people who are seriously considering the possibility that bestiality
has a genetic aspect to it.

In the years since, I've lost contact, so I don't know where the
research has gone over the last decade or so.

In The Challenge Universe, Ward Fulton is 'credited' with fully
articulating this, and I do have a WIP that goes into more detail. I
would like to get it finished, but that isn't high on my list of
things I wish to complete before my retirement.
    ---

    Bestiality as a Survival Tool

Bestiality. Is it possible it has a positive survival aspect? A
herdsman who is also a zoophile would tend to be more nuturing of his
animals.

We may have bred a tendency for bestiality and zoosexuality into
our companion animals and ourselves. It is my conjecture that such a
tendency to form emotional attachments had a genuine survival value in
early attempts at domestication.

Such may also explain the preferences for one species over
another. If sexuality is presumed to be a spectrum, zoosexuality is
also a spectrum in which descendents from various cultures may have
unknowingly bred into themselves preferences for specific species.

In cultures that do not use certain species as companions, there
might be an observable difference in preferences. Thus, oriental
cultures may use dogs more for pure sexual gratification while tending
to form emotional/sexual companionship with other species.

Where a lack of a species is evident (China and its ban on dogs
comes to mind) would the observed zoosexual pairings use other, more
common species?
======

Due to the length of time covered in The Challenge Universe, and
the episodic nature of my early work there, there are a lot of blanks
that can be filled in.

As of July, 2011, I had 14 more stories planned, or in progress.

In this, I'm going to focus on the ideas that don't have stories
started.
    ----

    Terra One:

All of the new work in progress, or planned, involves Ward Fulton
(a human male), and his partner Julie (a speech capable wolfess).

    'Designing a World'

This was going to be an exploration of what I felt would be
involved in planning for what was then thought to be a one way trip to
a recently terraformed world, to establish a colony that would have,
as one of its purposes, the goal of becoming a place that would save
some of Terra's biodiversity.

There is some native vegetation, and insect life analogs, but
no large animals. Terran fauna and flora would be carried as part of
the expedition, and one of the Gusrians' primary duties will be to
establish and maintain an ethos that would see the people of the new
as people would are living on their own, but they are also holding
things in trust, incase there there is another ecological crisis on
Earth.

    Mind Home:

    The Crisis Years:

These stories were going to cover the years when Mind Home was
subject to what was then called a 'mind virus' that affected the
memories of all inhabitants, but was especially virulent and deadly
when it was in a telepath. One of the major aspects of this was the
threatened loss of the shared history that the pack mind held. The
basic concepts were developed in 1999.
---

        The Cure:

The Guardians prepare for implementing the cure to the
Mutagenic Plague and implement that cure. As noted in one of the
posted stories, this cure involves the complete mental isolation of
every sapient of human equivalent intelligence.

        Aftermath:

Picking up the pieces, immediately after the cure is
applied. The recovery from the Mutagenic Plague.

    Transition:

The leaders of The Guardians realize it is time to have the
organization change directions, and turn over responsibilty for Mind
Home, to the people. this story arc was intended to be an exploration
of 'social entropy', as applied to large organizations. One of the
things planned, was to explore ways to break out of stagnation of
purpose, and revitalize people into accepting responsibility for many
things they take for granted.

As later stories show, however, while the change was briefly
effective, human nature and other factors eventually created a global
culture of comformity and stagnation.

        What Next?:

The Founding Guardians discuss and plan for turning over
responisibility for Mind Home's continued survival, to the general
population

        New Directions:

Arthur and his Pack take over as Heads of The Guardians
and a new path is traveled. Decisions made, the new director is
chosen to live in the shadows, and guide the next generations of
Guardians, who will no longer be visible to the public at large.
---

    Wind Rider's World:

        Decisions:

Very early in the history of The Challenge Universe, I
wanted to write about how the telepathic horses realized their
alternate reality was going to die if nothing was done.

My intention was to have them realize what was happening,
have a discussion, then, because of his almost unique ablility to
travel the alternate realities, Wind Rider was chosen to go to the
Ultimate home reality, and find the pivotal person who could save all
realities.

He would Find Allister, then return to his home reality.
Events would get him 'arrested and isolated', and it would be a lot
longer than he had planned for, before he would be able to return to
help Allister and his daughter.

Allister, because of his unexpected link, would know of
Wind Rider's plight, and be able to feel what he was feeling, and send
him reassurances over that empathic link, until Wind Rider's decisions
were vindicated, and he is allowed to return to Allister's side.

My opening image for this story, is of a small group of
telepathic horses walking along a shadowy forest trail and calmly
discussing the fate of their world.
