Marie's Solstice 10/14 Solstice on The Pier (new)
---

With all the background built in Marie's Solstice, it seemed a waste
to not use that to let me write a much shorter scene that references
it, and gives us a chance to see how everyone is doing.

Lots of throw away lines, but I don't know if I'll develop them later.

(note: The opening four paragraphs have been in my hopper since 2005.)

Enjoy!

Solstice on The Pier
A Marie's Solstice Scene
---

The waitress who'd greeted us had merely raised her eyebrows when
Mahika had handed her my leash and asked her to put it with her cloak.

Mahika had seen my grin, and her firm "Behave!" had the other woman
giggling. She was an old hand and we knew each other well.

I glanced at Mahika and chuckled. "Don't I always?"

"No." She gestured as we moved away from the alcove. "Our booth's
open."

As we worked our way across the room, my memories made me sigh, and
Lora touched my head and rubbed between my ears lightly. "Life is
nothing but memories, Thomas. Old ones that make us who we are, and
new ones we make while while we wonder who we're becoming."

I sneezed softly. "Thank you, Mrs. Galahalt. I was wondering when
you'd get around to reading those stories."

Wolf giggled before Lora could respond. "I *told* you he'd be able to
tell."

"You did. I had to try."

Mahika slid along one seat, then invited Wolf to join her.

Lora slid in the other side, then turned and invited me to settle
between her legs, so she could pet me. "We spent too many hours
brushing you, for you to get covered in peanut shells."

I settled so my head was on her thigh and my legs were across hers and
under the table. "And you enjoy running your fingers through my fur."

"When it's not tangled, yes. My god, Thomas. When the three of you
are shedding, it's like living in a permanent cloud of hair."

"Thanks, Love. We appreciate the time you've spent helping us."

She laughed. "I was only fishing a little. I enjoy giving you three
the attention, as much as you enjoy getting it."

"Matching points, this time?"

"Might as well. So, 'dog with the imploring eyes', I know about your
obsession with doing something special on the Solstices. You ready to
tell us what we're doing, being domestic in Sharkie's, on Solstice
Day?"

"We're waiting for some people to show up, so you can do the
interviews you missed out on, because of Marie's wedding on Winter
Solstice."

"I was busy, with more important things."

"True. Mind you, this one wasn't my idea..."

"Mom! Dad! I found him!"

Lora turned her head slightly, and laughed. "Hello, Jim. Nice
looking bitch you have working with you."

"Mom!"

Jim laughed. "Sorry we're late. Jess found a good sized group of
perps who hadn't received word she and Indrakshi are patrolling the
beach, and when I showed up to help, she did something with her tail,
eyes and ears, I think, and the next thing I knew I was assigned as
her handler for the day, and she was dragging me here, while Cathy and
Becky stayed behind to keep an eye on Indrakshi until everything got
sorted out."

I laughed. "Jess? Wasn't that pretty extreme?"

"Yeah, Dad. I guess it was, but Jim's sorta special, and I needed him
fast, because I was already late. Anyway, I already own all of them,
but this was a special occassion, and you keep telling me I gotta
practice all the time. Can't do it on you guys, because you're
immune, ya know?"

"Point. You ready to tell us what's going on?"

"Yeah." She lifted her head and studied Jim thoughtfully. "Before you
get all official on me, we've paid the fees and have our permits, so
the Sam Cee can park out there."

He frowned. "I didn't see him."

"Nobody was supposed to. I got some people keeping him hidden until
it was time for the show. Oh, I think you'll like this one. My other
mom is going to be playing herself."

He sighed. "Looks like you're in charge."

Jess giggled. "You bet I am! Come on, guys. Let's take over our
reserved tables on the patio."

We went outside, settled at the tables, then Jess settled on her
haunches and yelled. "Do it, guys! 'Kay's Journey'! "

The Sam Cee shimmered into visibility. On the upper deck was a
replica of Stonehenge. Facing us was Mark, and he lifted a microphone
to his lips and spoke:

"Thousands of years ago, a young girl trudged over a hill. She was on
her way to Stonehenge, because in spite of her fears, she knew she was
called..."

Kay appeared, and started walking towards the stones.

Jess nodded, then spoke without turning her head. "Marie's grand
parents are playing Tom, Mahika and Wolf, when they're human. Marie
and Ted are doing the background music. It's stuff they wrote just
for this. Took them years, in non-linear time, to get it right. Libby
and Weylin are the stand-ins who will be doing the animal stuff for
Tom and Mahika."

Wolf sneezed when Jess stopped. "Did you forget someone?"

"Nope! Jim better unhook my leash, or he's going to get a bath when I
go over the railing."

Jim unhooked her, then Jess turned her head and grinned at Wolf. "I'd
stay and tell you more, but I gotta get to work...

"As you!"

She leapt over the railing, then ran across the water and jumped
aboard the Sam Cee.

I sneezed. "Minx. She told *me*, that Marie's grand parents wanted
to give Lora a chance at the interview they've denied the world."

Lora reached without looking and rubbed my head again. "Let's savor
our daughter's Solstice Gift."

"Yeah. She is, isn't she?"

"Hush!"
