Brrt! Brrt! Brrt! Brrt!

The alarm is going off already? Time to get four girls up and out.

"Girls, time for breakfast."

"Yes, Uncle George."

"Yes, Papa."

"Where are Sarah and Abby?"

"Sarah heard Abby crying last night and went and got in her bed. They
talked a long time."

"Thank you, Rose. Abby, Sarah. Time to get up."

"Poppy, I wasn't very nice to Abby last night. She really tried to get
me to do my homework but I kept goofing off and she finally yelled at
me. I knew it was my fault, so I ran to the bathroom and locked the
door. After Abby got in bed, I heard her crying and I thought it was
just that she was sorry she yelled at me so I got in my bed. Then I
heard her tell you that she thought she had let you down because you
trusted her to take care of us. I got in her bed and told her I was
sorry for not listening to her and we hugged and talked a long time and
then we fell asleep in her bed. I'm sorry I didn't do what you told us
to do."

"Thank you, Sarah. Owning up to what you do or fail to do is being very
responsible. I think you've all learned a lesson. I gave you
directions that I expected you to follow. As the oldest, I asked Abby
to ensure that you did those things. Abby, Rose, and Sheila did what I
asked; you did not but you paid a price for that - you made your sister
feel bad, you made yourself feel bad, and you still haven't finished
your homework."

"Do I have time to do it now, Poppy?"

"Because you don't have much time, your breakfast will be toast and
juice. Put the homework on the table by your plate and work on it while
you eat."

"Yes, Poppy."

"Dress quickly. It's time to go."

""""OK.""""

"Come here. I think you all need a hug."

""""Yes!""""

"You did a both-arms hug and a mind hug at the same time, Dad."

"I love my girls very much, even if they're not always perfect."

""""We love you, too!""""

"Can we see Molly and the babies after school, Papa?"

"Yes."

"Can we try 'talking' with the babies, Dad?"

"Only if you start using their names."

"Does that include me, Uncle George?"

"Sheila, your mother needs to know where you are. You must check with
her before you go to the NICU or to see Molly."

"I will."

"Mr. Wilson, why are Molly's babies so little?"

"That's a good question, Emily. Do you think the other kids might also
want to know the answer?"

"Probably. Ms. Williams hard a hard time keeping us on yesterday's
lessons because all we wanted to talk about was babies. She said that
we'd either do it in class or as homework - so we all had homework."

"OK if I wait until everyone is here before I answer your question?"

"Yes and I have another question. How will the girls who don't have a
Daddy get pregnant? There are some men, but most of them aren't as nice
as you are and some just can't stand kids."

"My girls are working on a list of men who would be willing to 'take
care of' several girls. That's 'family private' until they've finished
the list and I've talked with all the men they choose."

"I understand. You must think I'm very responsible to trust me with
that kind of secret."

"I think you're mature and responsible enough to be trusted with a lot
of things. I'll tell you more when you need to know."

"OK."

+> Will you make a baby in me? Grandpa Ed said it was OK and Lacey told
me how loving and caring you are. Are you really her soul mate? Are
you gonna marry her? Could you be my soul mate, too?

+G In order. Yes, but we need to talk more about it. I don't know yet.
I don't know yet. I don't know yet. I hear other kids in the hall.
No more 'talking' this way when people other than my daughters are
present.

+> OK.

"Good morning, Mr. Wilson."

"Good morning, LeiLyn."

"Mr. Wilson, can you tell us more about Molly and her babies?"

"Yes, Martha, but I'll wait until everyone is here so they will all hear
it."

"You always think of other people."

"Class, I've had several requests for information about Molly and her
babies. I'll give you an overview, answer a question someone asked
before everyone got here today, then you can ask questions. Molly and
her babies are doing very well. Molly will be up walking today. Don't
look surprised - most people are out of bed as soon as possible after
surgery. The sooner you get up, the sooner you will heal. Molly will
probably be able to leave the hospital in the morning, so she will be
back in class as a remote student tomorrow afternoon."

"There were three babies. Are they triplets?"

"No, Su, they are a set of identical twins and another separate baby.
It's very rare that someone is able to make another baby while she is
pregnant."

"Why are they so small?"

"Emily, the babies had to be delivered early because they were growing
so fast. Molly isn't very big and her body couldn't stretch any more."

"I thought our babies would be born after four months. It doesn't seem
like it's been that long for Molly."

"Sheila, there are several reasons for the short pregnancy. I mentioned
that there was no more room in Molly's body for the babies to grow. Had
it been a single baby, the pregnancy could have been longer. The other
big reason is something the doctors discovered after the babies were
born - their bodies developed much faster than anyone expected. Dr.
Chambers thought that Molly's babies might all be on life support
because they were so small, but they're all fine and breathing on their
own."

+OR Is that part of the 'alien' stuff?

"Did all of you hear the question from Molly in Oregon?" "I did."

"Me."

"Me, too."

"Me three."

"Me four."

"The TV isn't on, Mr. Wilson."

"Molly isn't using the TV for remote class because an earthquake damaged
the communications line to Oregon. She's doing mental 'remote'. As
some of you didn't hear the question, I'll repeat it: Are the changes in
the babies part of the 'alien' stuff? The doctors aren't sure, Molly.
Some of the changes in the babies might simply be related to the genetic
speedups in your bodies; some of it might be that those changes
triggered the babies to be 'more alien' and develop differently than
typical babies. I understand that the doctors and scientists were
working very late last night, trying to determine what changes the
babies have and what caused those changes."

"Who are the babies named for?"

"Molly chose the names, Su. Molly Jean because the first daughter in a
Wilson family is named Molly; the Jean is for my late wife. Georgiana
is for me. Sandra is for my mother."

"All family names! I like that idea, but I don't know much about my
family."

"Elizabeth, we have family trees for most of the people here. Do you
know how to use the terminal in your quarters?"

"Yes."

"Click on the 'Who We Are' link and search for your name. You'll be
asked a security question that you must answer before you're allowed to
see anyone other than your parents. I think you'll know the answer when
you see the question."

"Is Molly gonna breast feed the babies?"

"No, Carolyn, her body isn't developed enough to produce milk. The
doctors think a girl may have to be nine or ten to be able to breast
feed."

"Then what do the babies eat?"

"Canned baby formula. It's powdered, like the powdered milk, so it
keeps for a long time."

"Does Molly have a scar from when the doctor cut her open?"

"Yes, Sandra, she does."

"How big is it?"

"Sarah, can you answer that?"

"Let me show you on my tummy. It goes from here to here. The stitches
are very small. Dr. Chambers had a plastic surgeon do the sewing so the
scar won't be really big when Molly is all grown up. Her body will be
two or three times as wide then as it is now, so the scar will be that
much bigger."

"That looks like it would hurt to move."

"It does, Linda. I help Molly when I'm at the hospital and the nurses
help her when I'm not there. It will get better as it heals, but Molly
won't be lifting anything heavy or playing any rough games for a while."

"Will all of us have to be cut open to get the babies out?"

"Dr. Chambers doesn't think so, Lacey. The doctors were extra cautious
with Molly because she had three babies in her and they didn't think the
babies would survive a normal vaginal delivery. If your babies develop
in the same manner, you should have a normal delivery. The doctors may
induce labor earlier than the expected four months if you body isn't big
enough to handle a full term baby."

"I love having you for a teacher, Mr. Wilson. You give the best long
explanations."

"Glad you like them, Sheila. I think that the more you know about
anything, the more comfortable you will be with it. Today you learned
more about having babies. I know that that's of interest to at least
some of you."

"All of us, Mr. Wilson. We talked about it in our study groups
yesterday - that's one reason we didn't get our work finished in class
and had to do it as homework. Those that aren't pregnant yet want to
be. Some girls are with their Daddy or alternate, but the rest of us
want the father to be as loving and caring as you are. I don't think
there are very many men like you here."

"Carolyn, there's project underway to resolve that problem. I'll tell
you more when it's finished."

"Mr. Wilson, I want someone like you for my Daddy."

"Thank you for the compliment Carolyn, but I have four girls and three
babies to take care of right now. I don't know where I'd put another
daughter."

+C I don't care who else they find - I want to have your babies.

+G That was a very soft whisper but my girls all heard you. Don't
"yell" - I can see it in your face.

+C My Grandpa George could read me like that.

+G We'll talk more later. No more 'talking'.

"Turn in your homework now. Be sure your name is on it. I know you're
all interested in babies, so you'll be interested to know that Alice
Green in Oregon is now the second girl to be pregnant with twins. The
doctors didn't expect any of you to have twins. It may be that some of
the changes made twins more likely or it may be that there are twins in
your ancestry and the genetic changes enhanced that trait in you."

"You just said that we didn't have communications with Oregon. How do
you know about Alice Green?"

"Su, her cousin Alice is here. They can communicate mentally just as
Molly is doing be in class. The Alice here told Dr. Chambers and she
told me."

"If my Grandpa was a twin, does that mean I'm more likely to have
twins?"

"That's the case in people without the genetic changes you've had, Alex.
I'm guessing that it probably increases your chance of having twins by
several times. The doctors are checking the ancestry of all the girls
in the project to see if there is a correlation in twin births among the
girls with twin ancestry and those without twin ancestry."

"Correlation?"

"College dictionary on the shelf behind you, Alex."

"It says 'mutual relation of two or more things'. There are a lot more
than two things, aren't there?"

"Yes, smart girl. More like dozens of things."

"We have 'college' dictionaries because you don't talk down to us. You
use the right word, even if we have to go look it up."

"Yes again, smart girl. The only way you will learn new words is to see
them and use them. That's a good lead-in to your vocabulary words for
today. I put them on the back of the double-sided whiteboard, so I'll
just flip it over and you can start on them. You should all be finished
in time for lunch. If you finish early, you may read until lunch time."

"Paired reading, Mr. Wilson?"

"If you and your partner are both finished, Martha. Just remember to
speak softly while others are working."

That should give most of them 30 minutes or more of reading time.
Beth's reading has improved a great deal since they started doing this
and so have her math skills. I think part of it may simply be the
confidence she's gained since she's been paired with Emily. I wonder if
Emily may be giving Beth some subconscious prompting, at such a low
level she's not aware of it - like my girls doing the simultaneous
speaking. We'll see how Beth fares when testing is done next month.

They've all finished and been engrossed in their books for a while. I
hear Sarah's stomach growling - time to feed these hungry girls.

"Class, time for lunch. Mark your place in your book and go wash your
hands. We'll have a special guest after lunch and I think you'll like
the subject. Meanwhile, today's cafeteria special is the 'Asian
Delights' buffet. I think there's something for everyone. Don't run
Sarah; there will be plenty of food. Remember that some of you are on a
special diet."

"Do you have to be pregnant to eat from the 'Good for you' list? Some
of those things are yummy!"

"No, LeiLyn, you don't have to be pregnant. I'll be eating from that
list today because I also think it's 'yummy'."

"You're silly, Mr. Wilson, but it's fun to be with a grownup who knows
how to be silly."

"My girls also tell me that I'm silly, Elizabeth. I think it's fun,
too."

"Class, this is Nurse Steele. She's going to show you how to feed a
baby and change a diaper. Everyone will have an opportunity to
practice."

"Thank you, Colonel. If you've ever fed a baby or changed a diaper,
raise your hand."

"It seems we only have one, Ms. Steele. Tell us what you've done,
Abby."

"I helped a neighbor with her twins. I gave one a bottle while she fed
the other one and when both needed diapers at the same time I changed
one while she changed the other one. Yesterday I got to feed
Georgiana!"

"You fed one of Molly's babies?"

"Yes, class. My girls all went to see Molly and her babies after school
yesterday."

"Abby, I want to see how you hold the baby for feeding and how you
change a diaper. With a class this big, I could use a helper."

"OK."

As usual, my responsible Abby does a good job of holding the "baby's"
head as she moves it and her bottle position is right on. The diaper
change included a wipe down and lotion application - she got giggles
from the other girls with her "Yuck! You smell bad." line.

"Thank you, Abby. Colonel, I'll be doing this presentation in the other
class tomorrow. Could I borrow Abby for a little while?"

"Abby?"

"I wanna help."

"Ms. Steele, you have a helper. I'll schedule other class things around
the time Abby will be gone."

"Thank you, Colonel, Abby. Class, you've seen how someone your size
does these things. I'll show you how an adult does them and you'll see
differences because Abby modified the process to fit her hands and body.
When I finish, I want all of you to come up and try."

I expected a lot of interest from the pregnant girls, but all of them
are intent on this - regardless of pragnancy status. The nurse said she
could easily stretch this to two hours, if needed, so time for me to go
see Molly.

The medication pole is twice as tall as she is. At least it makes her
easy to find in the crowd by the NICU.

"Hi, Daddy! I love your mind hugs! I didn't think you were coming
today."

"Remember that I have 15 other girls who need me as teacher? They only
wanted to talk about you and your babies today, but I got them back with
vocabulary words such as isolette, formula, crib, bassinet and about a
dozen similar words."

"That's not much different than what they wanted to talk about."

"But those words got an enthusiastic response about using the dictionary
and encyclopedia. They wanted to know more."

"You're smart, Daddy."

"I know, I get it from my smart daughters."

"You're silly, too."

"Elizabeth told me that today at school, but she it was fun being with
someone who knew how to be silly."

"I think so too, Daddy. Did you see the growth charts in the window of
the NICU? So many people are asking about the babies that they put a
poster in the window and they'll update the charts twice a day until we
take the babies home."

"People are still having difficulty accepting that a six year old can
have a baby at all. Three babies seem impossible, but they're seeing it
happen. I also saw the 'Five minute time limit' sign in the NICU
window. I guess they've had some traffic jams here."

"You'd be guessing right, Colonel. The hall had wall-to-wall people an
hour after you and your girls left yesterday. We must keep the hallways
clear, so the time limit sign went up. I have had to threaten to call
Security to get a few people to move on; these babies are very popular."

"Are they 'celebrities', Daddy?"

"As close to celebrities as we're likely to have, Honey. I see you
remembered what I said about 'celebrity' - that was almost a month ago."

"It's easier to understand when you're in the middle of it. You were
right when you said you didn't want to be a celebrity - sometimes it's
hard getting through the crowd to see my babies."

"Molly, let me show you the back entrance so you won't have to deal with
the crowds."

"I really don't have to go through the crowd?"

"You really don't. Would you like to see your babies now?"

"Yes."

"Follow me."

"The sign says 'Staff Restrooms'."

"Yes, it does. But behind that door is a door marked 'Authorized
Personnel Only' which is the other entrance to the NICU. If you have
your RFID tag with you, it's coded for entry here."

Bzzt!

"It worked!"

"Molly, remember that this is 'family private'. Only hospital staff and
immediate family of the babies in the NICU can enter this way."

"I understand."

+Mb3 eat

"Sandra is hungry."

"Here's a bottle if you want to feed her."

"I do."

+M Mommy loves you, Sandra.

+Sa mama

"She already recognizes Molly as her mother?"

"That's how it appears to me. She even reached up to touch Molly's
hand."

"Her pulse and respiration have slowed. She's calmed by being in skin
contact with Molly. I've never seen mother-child bonding occur this
fast! I must tell Dr. Chambers immediately."

"Go ahead. I'm not needed be back in the classroom for about an hour,
so there's no hurry. It seems the little girls are again teaching the
medical professionals."

"Sandra's really going through this bottle fast."

+Mb1 eat

"I'll take care of Molly Jean."

"Thank you, Daddy."

"She's my little girl too, Honey. Remember that I'll take care of these
girls just as I take care of you."

+G Your Daddy also loves you, Molly Jean.

+MJ dada

"She knows you, Daddy!"

"She and Sandra also know themselves - their mental links have changed."

"Will that happen with Georgiana?"

"Yes, but I can't tell you when."

"Sandra's finished the bottle."

+Sa mama

"Does she want me to hold her?"

"Probably. I know you can't manage the isolette door. Molly Jean is
almost finished with her bottle. You hold Sandra's hand until I can
help you."

"OK."

"Molly Jean has finished her bottle. You sit here and I'll get Sandra
out so you can hold her. Remember to support her head. I think it
might work best if you hold her like this with her head in the curve of
your elbow."

"I have her."

+Sa mama

"Try gently rubbing her tummy, just avoid the umbilical cord."

"She's smiling, Daddy."

"I think she knows that she's loved."

+Mb2 eat

"I'll take care of Georgiana."

+G Your Daddy loves you, Georgiana.

+Ge dada

"She knows you, Daddy."

"And she knows herself - her link has also changed."

"Do regular babies change like this?"

"Not nearly as fast, Honey. It would be months before a regular baby
would recognize her parents and even longer to know herself. I need to
tell Dr. Chambers about these things."

"Tell me what things, George? I came to see about the bonding that
appeared to be taking place. Sandra seems to be bonded with Molly - her
vital signs are incredibly calm and she seems to be smiling."

"There's more, Willa. They have recognized they are unique individuals
and their mental links have changed from being 'Molly's baby' to using
their own names. They're also using 'mama' and 'dada' in their mental
communications with us."

"What?"

"You heard me. Nurse Black knew when the babies were hungry because
she's a Wilson and could hear the faint messages they were sending. I
expect most of the girls could hear them now."

"How?"

"These babies are developing very fast - physically, mentally, and
emotionally. How do they compare today to their Apgar scores at birth?"

"They were all 1's yesterday. They're all 2's today. That's incredible
in 24 hours. You're right - we had no idea they could develop so
quickly."

"Are you headed for another all-nighter?"

"I'll know after some of the others have seen what's happening. Could
you keep Sheila again tonight?"

"Of course. Sheila also wants to visit Molly and her babies. I told
her you needed to know where she was and now you'll know. I'll bring
her here with the others after school, then we'll go by your quarters
for her to get more clothes."

"Thanks, George. It's good to have family that she likes being with."

"Molly, all your babies are fed. I need to go back to the classroom.
Do you want me to walk you back to your room?"

"You can help me get back in bed and kiss me goodnight - I'm tired."

"OK, Honey."

"You're back, Colonel. I think some of these girls would practice
changing diapers for another hour if I let them."

"Thank you for coming."

"Thank you for allowing me to see how caring these little girls are.
Their future children will have some of the best parents ever."

"Class, you have about 30 minutes. Would you like to spend that time in
paired reading?"

"Yes!"

"I thought so. Sheila, I spoke with your mother while I was on the
hospital floor. You may come with us to see Molly and her babies. Your
mother will be working late again tonight, so you'll be staying with us.
We'll stop by your quarters so you can get more clothes."

"Yes, Unc... Mr. Wilson."

Beth chose a book from the next level of difficulty? That's excellent
progress.

"Class, 5 minutes until the end of school. Put your books away and
clear your desks. Sheila, remember that you're coming with us today."

"Yes, Mr. Wilson."

"Uncle George, can I feed the babies?"

"If one of them is awake and hungry."

"Papa, how do we get through the crowd to get in the NICU?"

"There's back entrance for staff and families. My RFID tag works, as
does Molly's. Your tag will be encoded for access if your baby needs to
spend time in the NICU."

"The sign says 'Staff Restrooms'."

"That's correct - the staff restrooms are behind that door. But what do
the signs in this hallwasy say?"

"'Men', 'Women', and 'Authorized Personnel Only'. There's an RFID
reader by the 'Authorized Personnel Only' door, so it's the other door
to the NICU."

"Very good, Rose. Let's go see Molly's babies."

"Dad, you said we could try mind 'talk' with the babies if we used their
names. What do we say to them?"

"Maybe something like 'Hi Molly Jean, I'm your Aunt Abby'."

"And tell her that I love her?"

"Of course."

"Colonel, your girls are here just in time to feed the babies of they
want to."

"Sarah, Rose, and Sheila should get a turn today, Dad. I fed Georgiana
yesterday."

"That's very sweet of you, Abby. Nurse Steele had the girls in my class
practice giving bottles and changing diapers today, so I think they're
ready - plus they can probably 'feel' when the bottle is in the right
place."

+Ge eat

Sandra's bottle."

+@ Hi, Sandra. Your Aunt Sheila loves you.

"Uncle George, she smiled at me!"

"She knows also."

"Knows what, Daddy?"

"Hi, Molly. I didn't know you were here."

"I came down to help feed the babies but kids in the hall wanted to talk
with me and you got here first. I'm glad my babies have so many people
who love them."

"Molly, I think your babies have most loving family I've ever known.
Would each of you girls like to hold one of the babies when they finish
their bottles?"

"""Can we?"""

"I'll take that as an enthusiastic 'yes'. You'll only have about 10
minutes of 'cuddle time', but I think it would be good for Molly Jean,
Georgiana, and Sandra to also bond with their other family members."

"Thank you, Nurse Black. I think you've been reading the older girls'
minds."

"No, just their faces. I've seen that look on the faces of a lot of
kids - not just siblings but cousins and such - when there's a new baby
in the family."

"Girls, sit down over here and let me or Nurse Black get the babies out
for you. I see you're already getting your arms in position to hold a
baby. You get to hold a different baby from the one you fed so you'll
have the opportunity to know more than one of them today."

"Colonel, you have some incredible parenting skills. How many children
do you have?"

"Just the ones I've acquired in the past month: Molly, Sarah, Rose, Abby
and the three babies."

"But you must have a lot of experience with children. You seem so
knowlegeable."

"Someone once suggested that my parenting skills were inherited, just as
the girls' skills for levitation and the like. I can't argue that idea,
as my experience with kids has been limited time with my nieces and
nephews."

"Considering the other inheritable traits I've seen, I can readily
accept parenting as an inheritable skill."

"Time's up girls. Nurse Black and I will collect the babies and put
them back in their cribs. Tell them bye and we'll walk Molly back to
her room."

"Can you stay and eat supper with me?"

"Colonel, if you would like to eat with Molly I can request that
additional meals be provided. You'll get whatever is on the 'general'
menu today."

"Do you girls want to eat with Molly?"

""""Yes!""""

"Then I'll request five additional meals. We'll be serving in about 30
minutes."

"I think this group can find something to talk about for that long."

"You're silly, Dad. We can find things to talk about for hours."

"Molly, Dr. Chambers said that you could leave the hospital tomorrow.
I'll be here to get you while Ms. Williams gives the hydroponics and
music lessons. The remote classroom equipment is in place so you can be
part of the class tomorrow afternoon."

"Can't you just take my to school tomorrow?"

"I heard that request as I was walking by your door, Molly. If it's
that important for you to be back in class, your Daddy can take you for
the afternoon. However, I don't think you're ready for that much
effort. If your Daddy thinks you're not able to manage a full day at
school, you will be on the remote on Thursday."

"What I want to do may be more than I can do?"

"That's very good, Molly. I've heard your Daddy refer to his 'smart
girls' and he's right: you're smarter and more mature than I would ever
have guessed."

"Thank you, Willa. Is here anything in particular that I should be
watching for in Molly while she's at school?"

"If she slows down very much from her usual pace or if she's in too much
pain to function then she's probably doing too much and she needs a few
more days to heal. My preference would be that she stays on remote
class until Monday, but we'll know a lot more by the end of the day
tomorrow."

"OK, Honey. Dr. Chambers has laid it out for you. If being in class
tomorrow afternoon is too much for you, you'll be on remote for the rest
of the week."

"But I don't wanna stay home by myself!"

"Papa, can I be on remote with Molly so she won't be by herself?"

"You'd do that for me, Rose?"

"Yes. You're my sister, I love you and I want you to be all better."

"Can we, Daddy?"

"Yes. Remember that there will be consequences if you don't do the same
level of work as you would do in class."

"I remember consequences from yesterday, Papa. We'll work."

"George, you do have a group of loving, caring girls. No wonder Sheila
loves being with them."

"I rather like them too, Willa."

"You're silly, Poppy."

"I think it's great that you all have a father who knows how to be
silly. Some adults either never learned when they were kids or they've
forgotten. I see they're bringing in food for the whole tribe. I'll go
back to my analysis and you can eat."

"Time for us to go. Tell Molly bye but remember to be gentle."

"Kiss me bye, Daddy?"

"Of course, Honey. Remember that I'll be here before lunch tomorrow.
If you want, you can eat lunch with the class."

"I'd like that. You're the best Daddy ever!"
