The following story is a fantasy. It never happened. It takes place

This is a flash story that popped into my mind one evening for no reason I
can think of.

PEACE (no sex)
by Uncle Sky

Jonah Whalerton was a 40 year old ex-SEAL. He had served 20 years in the
Navy and had seen all of the war and suffering he ever wanted to. He was
tired when he left the service and wanted nothing more than to get away
from people for a while. He hoped that the solitude of his parents mountain
cabin would allow him to get rid of the nightmares left over from his many
missions. He had killed or seen killed way too many people, many innocent.
The horrors of war filled him with guilt and sadness.

He spent the first couple of weeks at the cabin doing almost nothing. He
sat in the sun and added to his tan. He swam in the little lake near bye.
He tried to sleep as much as he could but the dreams still haunted him.

At the start of the third week Jonah decided it was time for some exercise.
He started walking through the trees and up the mountain trails. He
explored as he walked, taking note of his surroundings. The area was
deserted except for a few animals that scurried away as he approached.

On one of his walks he noticed a cave partly hidden behind a large boulder.
He wondered about it but took no action at first. Each day as he walked
past it he felt an urge to check it out. The urge became stronger as the
days passed. Finally, he couldn't resist any longer and decided to move the
boulder and explore the cave. The next day he took a flashlight and some
tools with him on his walk. When he reached the cave he examined the
boulder and saw it could be moved with a little effort and a lever. He
chopped down a small tree and stripped the branches off, making it a fairly
sturdy pole.

Using the pole, he levered the boulder away from the cave entrance
revealing a very small cave. He entered using his flashlight to examine
the inside. At first it seemed empty, but as he stepped inside he noticed a
small indentation in the wall forming about a one cubic foot space.

In that space was a small box. It was about the size of a cigar box and was
covered in what looked like some kind of writing. It was not any language
he recognized though. The box was very ornate with beautiful designs
embossed on it. He couldn't tell what it was made of except to say it was
some kind of metal or possibly ceramic. He picked up the box and left the
cave, heading back to the cabin.

When he arrived at the cabin he examined the box more carefully. There
didn't seem to be any latch or hinges or any obvious way to open it. He
decided to clean it up and see if that revealed any opening or
instructions. He took some brass polish he had and started rubbing off the
dirt and grime. As he did, he felt the box warm in his hands. About the
time he was going call it a done job he heard a click and the box opened.
He lifted the lid to look inside and there was a sudden flash of very
bright light, momentarily blinding him. He staggered back and sat down at
the kitchen table.

It took about five minutes for his vision to return and when he looked
around he saw a strange looking man sitting on the other side of the table.
The man was tall and thin and very dark complexioned. Not black but more
like very tanned. There was something odd about his face but Jonah couldn't
seem to decide what it was.

"Who are you? How did you get here?"

"You could not pronounce my name if I told you but you may call me Sam. I
came out of the box when you released me. Thank you. I have been trapped in
there for a very long time."

"What do you want?"

"I want nothing from you Jonah. I will leave you in a few moments but first
I would like to give you a gift in return for you freeing me. What one
thing would you like if you had your choice. Call it a wish. If you could
wish for anything at all, what would it be?"

Jonah was having trouble believing the situation. He thought for a moment
and suddenly flashed on a beauty pageant he had watched on TV shortly
before he went up to the cabin. He smiled as he remembered the silly girl
answering the same question he had just been asked. Since he didn't really
believe what was going on he saw no harm in giving the same answer she had.

"World peace."

"World peace?"

"Yes. No more war or fighting between people. Peace all over the world."

The man smiled and snapped his fingers. "It is done." And with that he
vanished along with the box.

Jonah decided he must have been dreaming or imagining the whole thing. He
went back to his daily routine and tried to forget about it. On his next
walk he noticed that the boulder had rolled back in front of the cave and
seemed to have sealed it this time. He resumed his walk and ignored it.

A few days later, Jonah decided it was time to go home. His family might be
worried about him. He drove down the mountain into the small town in the
valley.

Something was wrong. It took him a few minutes to realize what it was.
There were no people anywhere in sight. He stopped for gas and filled up at
the automated pumps. But when he went inside the open station to pay, there
was nobody there. He saw a diner next door and thought he could ask there
and get something to eat at the same time. There were plenty of cars parked
at the diner but when he went inside it was empty.

He searched the whole town and saw nothing alive but a few cats and dogs
wandering around looking lost.

Jonah was frightened and drove out of town to the highway. He sped to the
city 50 miles away and found the same thing. It was deserted. Something
terrible had happened and he couldn't think what it was. There was no sign
of damage and no bodies. He headed for home. It took him two hours. When he
got there he found the same conditions. He couldn't find his family or
friends. He entered his parents home and could not see any problems.
Nothing was messed up or missing. There just weren't any people around.

The phone worked but the only thing he got was answering machines or no
reply at all. He tried the radio and there was nothing on but static. The
same proved true with the TV as well.

Jonah spent the next month driving around the country looking for any
living person. He found none. Then he made a discovery. He checked several
newspapers and found they all had the same date. He thought back trying to
think if he had noticed anything happening on that date.

Then he remembered the man and the wish. He thought it was a dream and made
a silly wish. World peace. No more fighting. He had gotten his wish the
only way it could come true. As long as there were humans in the world
there would be conflict. The only way his wish could be granted was to
remove the human race from the world. The man had said "It is done." and
Jonah was responsible for the end of the human race.

There was peace in the world and there would be no more war or fighting.

The last violent death of a human on earth was Jonah when he could not take
the loneliness and guilt any longer and ended his own life with a shotgun.

The moral? Be careful what you wish for.

The end.

Just a note to my readers. Those of us who write the stories you like to
read have received and continue to receive a lot of support from ASSTR
(Alt.Sex.Stories.Text.Repository). The major thing they do for us is
archive our stories and make them available to you the readers. This is
a non-profit organization and is staffed by volunteers. The operation is
costly and the only income they have is from donations. That being the
case, I ask that you consider making a donation if you have enjoyed my
stories. It will help to make sure they remain available for all to read
free. You can find out about donating at this link:
