I'm awake before the alarm clock? Guess I also needed that early
bedtime. If the girls can't have their 'other stuff', I'll ease the
food list a little this morning - two pancakes for each of them to go
with eggs or oatmeal. Will the smell wake the...

"I smell pancakes!"

"Good morning, Sarah. I wondered if the smell would work as an alarm
clo...

"I smell pancakes!"

"Good morning, Rose. Looks like the smell is work...

"I smell pancakes!"

"Good morning, Molly. Do I have two who want eggs and one who wants
oatmeal?"

"Eggs."

"Eggs."

"Eggs."

"Is being pregnant affecting your food choices, Rose?"

"Yes, Papa - but no pickles."

"Then eggs for four and each of you has two pancakes. Do you have any
tasks today?"

"I check the tanks when I get to class, Poppy."

"We tell about our skills and I offer to 'read' those who haven't yet
found their skill or skills, Daddy. Do I also 'read' Sarah for a second
skill?"

"If Sarah is willing to be your guinea pig."

"I am, Poppy."

"We ask Alex how she found out she has medical skills, Papa."

"Very good, girls. You three were so tired last night I wasn't sure you
would remember what we talked about."

"You also told us no 'other stuff' until we get enough sleep and rest
time to match what we do during the day. And you said something about
fitting Sheila in the sleep rotation. If we're not getting 'other
stuff', will she?"

"Very good synopsis of what I said, Honey. Ensuring that you three have
enough rest takes precedence over everything else. I know how much you
enjoy 'other stuff' - I do too - but taking care of you and your babies
is more important. Sheila is also pregnant, so the same rules apply -
sleep comes before fun."

"""We love you too!"""

"Each of you did research on school bells last night. I'm your source
for the things I know. The resources in the library should also be
identified. You were very tired last night - did you remember to cite
the sources you used?"

"""No!"""

"Finish eating, brush your teeth, get dressed and you may have enough
time to complete your homework."

"""OK."""

The extra sleep was good for them - they are "bright-eyed and
bushy-tailed" this morning. I'll continue to watch them for "run down"
in the evening. And 10 minutes later they've finished the references.
I'm enjoying being a parent! George Wilson, Special Forces
jack-of-all-fighting-trades is enjoying caring for 3 little girls - the
soldiers who experienced my kick-butt training would never believe it.

"Ready, girls?"

"""Yes."""

"Both tanks are at 20C, Poppy."

"Thank you, Sarah."

"Good morning, Mr. Wilson."

"Good morning, Alex. Would you be willing to share how you discovered
your medical skills with the class today?"

"Yes sir. I thought you might be asking us what our skills are."

"You thought correctly, smart girl."

"My Daddy calls me 'smart girl' too. Do you really think I'm smart?"

"Smarter than you can imagine, Alex."

Ding! Ding!

"Did everyone do their research last night?"

"Here's mine." "Mine too." "My Daddy told me that they used an animal's
horn in the school my Grandpa attended."

"I'll read all of these later. I'm sure that there are things I'll want
to share with the class. This morning I want each of you to tell me
what your inherited skill or skills might be. I know that all the
skills don't show up at the same time, so you may not have discovered
yours yet. For example, Beth has great telekinesis, but it didn't show
itself until a couple of weeks ago. If you haven't discovered your
skill or skills, Molly can 'read' you to find your skills if you want to
know now. It's also OK if you choose to wait until your skill or skills
show themselves. I'll have Molly demonstrate on Sarah because we think
Sarah may have more than the communications and mind control that she
has demonstrated."

"You did the long explanation again!"

"This group seems to like long explanations."

"We do!"

"Molly, are you ready?"

"Yes. Ready, Sarah?"

"Go ahead."

"I see communications and mind control - but we already know about
those. There's something else that's not quite as strong. It's not
exactly the same as I saw in Alex and Carlotta, so maybe you're a
different kind of doctor."

"Read me too, Molly."

"OK, Rose. I see the communications and mind control and there's
medical that's just like what I saw in Alex."

"Alex, how did you determine that you had medical skills?"

"When my Mommy got pregnant with Carlotta, I knew it before she did and
I knew the baby was a girl."

"That sounds like me!"

"Yes, Rose, it does. You knew that you were pregnant in less than 12
hours."

"She's pregnant? It doesn't show."

"It's only been 2 days, Alex."

"Then she must be medical like me."

"Other girls, if you know your skill, please tell us when and how you
discovered that skill. If you don't know, you may ask Molly to 'read'
you or you may choose to wait until your skill appears. We also know
that eye color is an indicator of your primary skill - our TK girls have
blue-green eyes and our pilots have blue-gray eyes."

"Do me, Mr. Wilson."

"OK, LeiLyn. Molly, see if you can 'read' LeiLyn."

"Since you have blue-green eyes, I expect to find TK as your primary
skill. You may have others. Alex told me that the 'reading' tickles a
little but it's not otherwise scary."

"You do long explanations like Mr. Wilson does."

"I learned it from him."

"LeiLyn, I see TK and some communications. Do your eyes have gold
flecks in them?"

"Yes."

"Then you are a captain of flyers."

"But I've never moved anything with my mind."

"We need to give you the basic lessons in TK. Mr. Wilson, can we do the
'teddy bear' lesson today?"

"Yes, Molly. After lunch, you may use the table in the back of the room
to show LeiLyn how you started with TK."

"We do such interesting things. School really is fun this year."

"Glad you think so, Linda. Girls, I'd like to finish talking about your
skills before lunch today."

Today has been interesting and we're not halfway through it yet. I'm
having fun at school!

"You sure do have a big smile, Mr. Wilson. What's so funny?"

"Nothing funny, Lacey. I'm very happy that we all seem to be having fun
as we learn."

"You're having fun?"

"Yes, Lacey. Sometimes grownups have fun too."

"Mr. Wilson?"

"Yes, Abigail?"

"Where do these skills that you are talking about come from? Before I
got here, I never knew anyone who can do the things you've talked about
and when I told my Daddy that there were pregnant girls in first grade
he punished me for lying."

"Who is your Daddy, Abigail?"

"Ed White - he worked at the city water thingy."

"Let me explain some things about the Survival Buildings. Most of the
people here were selected a long time ago. Since you and your Daddy
weren't part of that group, he doesn't know about these things."

"Does that mean I could start making babies too?"

"How old are you, Abigail?"

"I'll be 9 next month."

"Being old enough or ready to make babies is something your Daddy and I
must discuss and the doctors here must examine you to see if your body
is ready for those changes. You give him this card when you get back to
quarters today and tell him it's very important that he call me."

"Mr. Wilson, what's it like outside? We don't have any windows to look
out of, we're not allowed to go outside, and there's nothing about
what's happened outside on the house TV/message system."

"That's a good question, Sheila. You know that Yellowstone erupted in a
big way, but did you know that it erupted twice? There were two big
earthquakes along the San Andreas fault in California which triggered
the Yellowstone eruptions. Those quakes triggered earthquakes in some
of the other faults in the western half of the US. They also triggered
eruptions in volcanoes in Washington State - Mount Hood, Mount Rainier,
and Mount St. Helens. Because the Yellowstone eruptions were so large,
the volcanoes in Washington won't have much effect on the atmosphere,
although they did spew lava, rock and ash over a large portion of the
state. There was at least one volcano in South America that erupted -
it's called Puyehue and is in southern Chile."

"You did the long explanation again!"

"And I have some more explanation for you. I'll take you up to the
situation room where we can use the cameras around the building to see
what it looks like here and I may be able to get satellite images of the
US so you can see what the volcanoes look like. You may find that there
have been some changes."

Out to the elevator, up to the room, in with my RFID tag - I won't let
the other kids know that the Ninja Mind Warriors also have access here.

"I'll raise the shrouds on a couple of the cameras so you can see what's
outside here."

"It's dark out there. Shouldn't it be light in the morning?"

"That's one of the effects of having the ash and dust in the air - it
blocks much of the sunlight. Remember that the lack of sunlight is one
of the things that stops crops from growing. This image is the US from
a satellite."

"Where's California?"

"Keep looking left, Molly."

"It's an island?"

"Part of it is now. The earthquakes were so strong that much of
California broke off from the rest of the US and is now a large island."

"Florida looks funny."

"You're right, Lily. When California fell into the ocean, it created a
huge tidal wave that washed away most of the buildings in the Hawaiian
Islands and did major damage within 50 miles of the coast of Alaska,
Washington and Oregon, as well as Mexico, much of South America, and
most of the countries in Asia that border the Pacific Ocean. Some of
that tidal wave wrapped around South America and hit the East Coast of
the US and the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana is mostly under water and many
of the cities on the East Coast were washed away."

"Then only the people in the Survival Buildings are safe?"

"Yes, Su. Except for a few places where people found cave systems with
running water and they were able to grow mushrooms for food, we're the
only survivors."

"How did we know to build these places?"

"There were people like my brother Daniel who studied the earthquake
fault lines and the actions of the volcanoes and understood that
something big was coming and that it would be a TEOTWAWKI event."

"TEOTWAWKI?"

"I know what that means!"

"Go ahead, Molly."

"TEOTWAWKI is an acronym for The End Of The World As We Knew It. The
world we knew had sunshine and flowers and birds and playing outside and
going to the beach - and we don't have any of those things anymore."

"That's right. The world you knew just a month ago had all the things
Molly mentioned. From these images, you can see that some of them won't
exist again for a long, long time."

"How long, Mr. Wilson?"

"Maybe 20 or 30 years, Linda."

"We'll be stuck in here that long?"

"Unless something changes. One of the girls here mentioned controlling
the weather."

"That was me, Mr. Wilson."

"Can you tell us about it, Lily?"

"My Dad told me that our family has always had nice weather for parties
and family events, the ball games we went to were never rained out, and
we always had enough rain for the grass and flowers in our yard. I
thought about it really hard one day and I made it rain on the swimming
pool next door. Then I made it rain just in the kiddie pool in our
yard. If I practice and if I have a lot of help, I might be able to
control bigger areas."

"School really is fun! Nobody told me we could do stuff like this."

"Not everyone can do these things, Elizabeth. Lily is the only one here
and I only know of one other girl - she's in Germany."

"That means we all have to work together to get things done, doesn't
it?"

"Yes, Beth. No one person is able to do all the things that will need
to be done to make Earth habitable again - or to build and fly a
spaceship that we could use to go find a planet that doesn't have the
problems Earth has."

"Are there other planets like Earth, Mr. Wilson?"

"Can you answer that, Sheila?"

"Lacey, Earth was just one of the planets that was discovered when our
home planet was about to be destroyed. The galaxy map shows about 100
planets that are the right size and temperature, and have water. There
may be more but they had to hurry and evacuate our planet before the
asteroid hit it."

"Do the grownups know all this?"

"Most of them do. Your parents wouldn't have told you unless you asked
because they want you to feel safe and to be a kid for as long as
possible. The adults know that you will have to grow up faster than any
other group of kids in history. If your skills are not yet being used,
they will be soon. Most of you will have the responsibilities of an
adult by the time you're 12 years old - some of you much sooner."

"Another long explanation. You must really think we're smart."

"I do. I also think my smart girls might be ready for lunch."

"We are."

"Let me put the covers down over the cameras and we'll go eat."

This morning went fast and they've been exposed to some of the worst of
the damage. None of the pictures were close enough to show crushed
houses and the ash covers the bodies of people and animals. That part
can wait 'til much later. They may be writing 'A History of the End of
the World' in a few years. There will be paper copies because ink and
paper typically outlast electronic storage media - and the equipment to
play it back on. How many 8 inch floppy disk drives are available
today?

"Mr. Wilson?"

"Yes, Sheila?"

"Yesterday, I forgot to ask if I could eat supper with Molly and Sarah
and Rose. Can I start tonight?"

+@And do 'other stuff'?

"Your mother will have to know that you plan to eat with us."

+I'll check to see how tired you are before you get any 'other stuff'.
Molly, Sarah, and Rose are getting bedtime kisses and backrubs because
they were so tired last night. That may be all you get.

"OK."

"Mr. Wilson?"

"Yes, Linda?"

"Do you remember what I asked you Sunday?"

"Yes. You need your mother's permission. She can call me later today
and we'll set up a time."

+I'll check you to see how tired you are before any baby-making. Molly,
Sarah, and Rose are getting bedtime kisses and backrubs because they
were so tired last night. That may be all you get. Sheila wants to eat
supper with us; if she's as tired as the other girls that's all she'll
get.

+[That was like a whisper. Did anyone else hear you?

+Molly, Sarah, Rose, Lily, and Sheila. They're all family and hear me
even when I 'whisper'.

"OK."

"George."

"Yes, Ed?"

"Oregon has lost fiber connectivity. They used a satellite phone to let
us know that they are OK. Their seismic sensors indicated an earthquake
along a fault line that wasn't on any map. It is now. The people and
the facility are OK but communications are limited - the ash and dust
are rapidly getting too thick for the satellite phone."

"I think we'll still have communications. Molly, can you contact the
Molly in Oregon?

"I'll try."

+Molly in Oregon, this is Molly in Durham.

+$Hi, Molly in Durham. This is Molly in Oregon.

+My Daddy told me that other communications are out to your site. Are
you OK otherwise?

+$We are. I'll tell my Daddy that we can still talk. Hi, Mr. Wilson,
Sarah, Rose, Lily, Sheila.

+Hi, Molly. If you know we're all here, then we may not have video but
we have good communications. Have you tried sending pictures?

+$Yes, I can send pictures. I'm going to try to send you live images.
The last time I tried I only did about 20 seconds because I get tired
real quick. Here it comes.

She can do it! The girls here need to learn how. We also need to find
any Wilson family members at other sites and have them try to contact
Molly in Oregon. We may still be able to maintain communications.

+$That's it - I'm tired.

+Thank you, Molly. My girls also 'saw' what you sent. Can you teach
them how to do that?

+$Yes. Maybe after school today?

+You 'call' us when you're ready.

+$OK.

"Ed, I just 'saw' live video from the Oregon Survival Building."

"How?"

"My girls and I can send pictures. Molly in Oregon has developed a way
to send live images. She can only manage it for 20 or 30 seconds at a
time because of the effort required, but it works. She'll teach my
girls after school today. They can then teach at least the girls of
Wilson descent at other sites where we still have electronic
communications - that will be more believable as a starting place. I
don't know if other families can do this."

"Another reason I'm glad you're in charge of this project, even if we
didn't know about that ability when the assignment was made."

"Sarah, would you and Rose watch the other girls check the temperature
and other parameters of the hydroponics tanks? As there are two tanks,
half the girls can go to each tank. Molly, you take LeiLyn to the table
in the back. There's a teddy bear there that she can practice lifting."

"""Yes, Mr. Wilson."""

"How do they talk at the same time?"

"Emily, they're family and they spend a lot of time together. Lily
stayed with us before her Dad was flown here from England; she was
talking with them the second day she was there. I'm not sure how it
works, but perhaps family members do subconscious communications."

"You did another long explanation. Aren't you afraid we'll get lost in
it?"

"None of you have gotten lost yet, have you?"

"No. Are we really smarter than other kids?"

"Much smarter, Emily. That's one reason I agreed to teach this class -
I enjoy being with you smart kids and watching your minds stretch around
new ideas and concepts."

"WOW!"

"What's your 'Wow!' about, Molly?"

"LeiLyn lifted the teddy bear and said 'That was easy.' then she lifted
the table - level and without any wobble!"

"That's proof of your TK ability, LeiLyn. Remember to tell your father
what you did today so he won't be surprised when you lift things in your
quarters. Did Molly tell you how important it is to concentrate on the
thing you're lifting even if there are distractions?"

"She did, Mr. Wilson. She told me about falling on her butt when she
lost concentration while she was in the air."

"Did she also tell you how to lift yourself, which is the first step in
'flying'? Since you're now at my eye level, it appears that she did."

"This is fun. How high could I go if I was outside?"

"If you were outside in clean air, we don't know what the limit is - at
least until you get so high you run out of air to breathe. Remember
that Beth moved the escape pod that Lily's Dad travelled in and it was
thousands of feet in the air."

"Could I use a big bag to collect the junk that's in the air and make it
cleaner?"

"That's an interesting idea, LeiLyn. What do you other girls think of
her idea?"

"With all the wind, the bag needs to be cloth that can let the wind out
but keep the ash inside." "The bag would get heavier when it got a lot
of stuff in it. We need to work out how much she can lift and what size
bag would hold that much weight." "Do we have any stuff to make the bag
out of? And thread to sew the bag together. And a sewing machine that
could work with thick cloth and big thread." "Where do we dump the stuff
that's collected? If we can dump it out, we can use the bag more than
once."

"Very good discussion, smart girls. Linda, Beth, Lacey, LeiLyn, and
Lily. I want you to research the materials on the warehouse floors.
I'll have the access permissions on the terminals in your quarters
upgraded to see that database. I want you to work out a possible design
of the bag - what shape and size, how you hold it open to collect ash,
how you close it to contain the ash while it's taken to the dump site,
and what would be an acceptable place to dump the ash. I want you to
report back to the class on Monday. If there is someone you think can
help you, contact me and I'll arrange for that person to work with you."

"Wow! We do get to do fun stuff!"

"It's an interesting project, Linda, but it may not be so much fun when
you're researching what fabrics we have and which ones might work. Some
of that will probably be boring."

"But we get to work on something that might help clean the air. That
means we can play outside sooner!"

"I can't promise that the idea will work."

"We know. That's why we're doing research and not starting to build a
bag."

"Very good, Lily."

Ding! Ding!

"Is school over already?"

"Look at the clock, Su."

"It doesn't seem like we've been here that long."

"Then school must have been interesting today."

"It was."

Thanks and hugs again today - even if I just assigned what once would
have been a nearly impossible engineering task to a bunch of kids
between 6 and 8! These girls are smarter than I'll ever be - I just
have more experience to work from. I'm glad I was persuaded to take
this class.

"Molly, Sarah, Rose. Remember that Molly in Oregon will be contacting us
later today to teach you how to send live images. Her school day ends
in about 3 hours, so you have some free time until then. Dr. Chambers
wants to see Molly every day after school so we'll stop by her office
now. Would you like to go swimming after that?"

"""Yes!"""

"Come on back Molly and bring your Daddy with you."

"You girls stay here."

""OK.""

"Up on the table, Molly, and let me freeze your tummy again."

"OK, Dr. Chambers."

"You see very perky today, Molly."

"Daddy made us go to bed early last night with just a goodnight kiss and
a backrub."

"He seems to have known what you needed. That's a good thing, as your
babies are growing much faster than we expected. We may be doing the
C-section in 3 or 4 weeks."

"I thought you said 3 months!"

"That was a month ago, Molly. You've taught us a lot about how babies
grow in our genetically modified girls. We'll be better able to plan
for the other pregnant girls because of you. It's very important that
you see me every day after school. If anything seems unusual over the
weekend, have your Daddy call me immediately."

"OK."

"Willa, Beth mentioned her cousin Kate several weeks ago - something
about her being 10 years old and pregnant?"

"Interesting that you should ask about her today. She's one of Colonel
Mason's granddaughters and was always very physically affectionate with
him. Because she seemed smarter and much more mature than the others,
he explained the Repopulate Project to her some time ago and she asked
to be part of it. That wouldn't normally have been justification for a
girl to enter, but we're talking about a just-turned-8 kid who was in
the 7th grade. The genetic changes were more difficult for her because
she was on the edge of puberty but she stayed with it. She was the
first pregnant girl in the project - at age 9, not 10. Someone outside
the project noticed that she was pregnant and abducted her into foster
care. As no one there had any idea that she could deliver in 4 months
or so, she received poor care for the days it took to get her back.
Kate survived but her baby did not, so the abductor was charged with
kidnapping and manslaughter. Kate's still in the project, living with
her father, Mark Mason, in Montana. She wanted to try again, but we've
been very cautious with her. Molly's simultaneous pregnancies have
shown us that these girls are very resilient, so yesterday I gave Kate
the go-ahead to start trying again - this time with her father instead
of her grandfather. Another note on that family - Jane is pregnant.
She had the same symptoms as Molly and Sarah so Captain McGregor brought
her in this morning."

"George, I have a question that I'm not sure how to ask. Would you
consider taking in another girl - but one without any of the speedups?
One who probably has no alien ancestry?"

"Why are you asking, Willa?"

"One of the people from the city water plant died of a heart attack
today. Totally unexpected as he was only 35 and appeared to be in
excellent health. We intercepted his daughter before she got home from
school. She had one of your cards and said she was supposed to give it
to her Daddy. She said it was so she could start making babies like the
other girls in her class."

"Abigail with reddish-blond hair?"

"Yes."

"'Making babies' was one of her questions today at school, but I only
told her I needed to explain to her father how things work here. Does
she have any other family? Is one of the other workers a friend of her
father?"

"No other family. None of the others wants to take in a girl."

"I have to explain this to the girls and see what they want to do. I
think they'll probably want to at least try to care for another girl
with no family - Molly has already done that several times."

"But those girls were family, albeit distant family. What will they
think about including 'just another kid' - and one that's older than
they are?"

"Molly, Sarah, Rose. We need to talk."

"I vote yes, Daddy."

"Me too, Poppy."

"Me three, Papa."

"But I haven't told you what I wanted to talk about."

"We already know. When you're concerned about someone, you broadcast it
to all of us - maybe like us girls talking at the same time?"

"Do you all understand that it will be much harder for Abigail to adapt
to our family and its relationships than it was for any of you? Do you
also understand that if she chooses to have the genetic speedups you
will be helping take care of her while she recovers from the treatments?
Do you also understand that she may have no 'alien' powers and that you
will be responsible for protecting her when needed?"

"""Yes, yes, and yes."""

"Can you accept the fact that she's not family and may not get along
with any of you?"

"Can we get a bigger apartment so each of us can have her own room,
Daddy? Then whoever gets along can spend time together but all of us
only have to be together at school or at meals."

"Sarah, Rose. What do you think of Molly's idea?"

"I like it Poppy."

"Me too, Papa."

"Then we should go talk to Abigail."

"Mr. Wilson? Why are you here?"

"Dr. Chambers told me that you need someone to take care of you. My
girls want you to be part of our family."

"Really? You'll be my new family?"

"Yes, Abigail."

"Can you call me Abby? That's what my Daddy called me."

"OK, Abby. I don't think you're ready to call someone else 'Daddy', so
would you like to call me Uncle George?"

"Even at school?"

"No, at school I'm Mr. Wilson, even to my daughters."

"OK, Uncle George. Can we go home now?"

"Is there anything you want from the apartment you and your Daddy stayed
in?"

"My clothes and yellow blanket and my bear."

"Molly, Sarah, Rose. We'll go help Abby move. Since she'll will need
some serious comforting for a few weeks, especially at night, you'll
each be sleeping in your own bed and we need to put the sleep rotation
on hold. That also means that Sheila and Linda won't be staying with us
for a while; I'll explain to them later. If all of you get along with
Abby, I'll arrange for us to move to a larger apartment on Saturday.
Any questions?"

"Uncle George, I know you do long explanations at school, but do you
always do them?"

"Whenever I think it's appropriate."

+She got all of it, Daddy. She's as smart as we are.

+Yes, Honey, she may very well be. That explanation was also a test of
her mental abilities. I'll do some other testing later.

+.Does that mean she might have other mental powers?

+No, Sweetie, only that she's smart enough to follow a long explanation.
Other powers we'll have to test. Did you check the color of her eyes?

+:Blue, Papa. I didn't look close enough to see if there are gold
flecks.

+Thank you, little Thinker. She also has blond hair, which often goes
along with blue eyes in the general population.

+:She might not be an alien?

+That's entirely possible, Honey - she might just be a smart human.

+You're silly, Daddy.

+I know; I get it from my daughters.

"Girls, do you want to fix something special for supper to celebrate
having Abby as part of our family?"

"We get to cook, Uncle George?"

"Yes, Abby, the girls get to help cook. They aren't allowed to to do
things where they might get hurt, so I put things in and out of the oven
and do most of the cooking in skillets. They get to choose the foods we
fix and they do most of the off-the-stove food preparation."

"Another long explanation, I'm gonna like being here!"

"Can we fix chicken echiladas, Poppy?"

"Yes, with the restriction of having the proper balance in your meal to
match the pregnant girl food list."

"They're all pregnant?"

"Yes, Abby, all three of them."

"Can you make a baby in me, too?"

"That depends on your body, Abby. You've not had the genetic speedups
that the other girls have had. We can see if your body is ready to try
baby-making things, but you won't get pregnant for a long time. Unless
you choose to have those changes made, you probably won't get pregnant
until you're 13 or 14."

"Can we try tonight so I can learn what it feels like to make a baby?"

"Girls, OK if I do what Abby asks?"

"Yes, Daddy. She needs some very special care."

"Yes, Poppy."

"Yes, Papa."

"Daddy, if you have 6 girls - me, Sarah, Rose, Abby, Sheila, and Linda -
does that mean there'll be a Monday girl and a Tuesday girl and so
forth?"

"Yes, Honey, just as you described it when you were asking about Beth
and Jane a couple of weeks ago. One girl each night and I sleep by
myself on Sunday. You girls want to fix supper now?"

"""Yes."""

"Where are the tortillas, Uncle George?"

"Can I explain, Daddy?"

"Go ahead, Molly."

"Tortillas are a form of bread but bread doesn't last very long, so
there is no bread in the store here. The ingredients to make bread keep
for a long time and we can get those ingredients in the store. So we
have the stuff to make tortillas."

"You do long explanations, too!"

"I learned it from Daddy."

"Uncle George, what makes these enchiladas taste so good?"

"Things that we fix in the way we like best almost always taste better
than someone else's cooking. Maybe having so many people around you who
care about you also helps?"

"I think you're right, Uncle George."

"Bath time. Do you want to bathe yourselves or have me help?"

"""Join us in the shower?"""

"Can you get in the tub with me?"

"The shower girls first because that won't take very long. Each of you
choose jammies or a gown for tonight and clothes for school tomorrow.
Abby can lay out her clothes on my bed. The rest of you in your own
rooms."

+No 'other stuff' tonight, Daddy?

+No, just a shower and a back rub. Abby hasn't yet come to terms with
her Daddy being dead, so I expect she'll be almost as upset tonight as
Sarah was after she killed that soldier.

+I think you're right, Daddy. I was very upset every night for a week
after my first Daddy died and I still had Mommy to care for me. Abby
doesn't have any family here.

+Very good analysis, Honey.

"""Carry us to bed?"""

"One at a time, girls. I don't have enough arms to carry all three of
you. Molly?"

"You gonna drop me on the bed this time?"

"No, I won't drop my pregnanat daughters. You can have a quick back rub
and a good night kiss."

"Goodnight, Daddy."

"Sarah?"

"It's not as much fun if you don't drop us."

"That may be true, but it's safer for the babies."

"Goodnight, Poppy."

"Rose?"

"I like the drop too."

"In 4 months or so, you can get the drop again - if you don't get
pregnant too quick."

"Goodnight, Papa."

"My turn now?"

"Yes, Abby. Is the water OK?"

"Just right. How did you know?"

"It's what the other girls tell me is just right. Wait and let me get
in first."

"Why?"

"So you can lie down on me and we can explore your body. If you want to
try making a baby, your baby making parts must be big enough to start
trying."

"Baby making parts? Isn't that just my kitty?"

"Is this your 'kitty'?"

"That's what my Daddy called it. And it likes to be rubbed just like a
kitten does."

"Here's a mirror. You hold it so you can see the parts i'm touching.
These are the lips of your vagina; that's the opening where babies are
made and where babies get out of your body when they're ready to be
born. When I spread the lips, the little tube at the top is where you
pee. The hole down here is the actual entrance to your body. There's a
little piece of skin behind that hole that's called your hymen."

"Hymen? Is that what Daddy called my 'cherry'? He said it would bleed
red like a cherry when he popped it with his finger - and it did. It
hurt too, but the kissy-face made it better."

"How much kissy-face have you done?"

"We kissed with wet lips and rubbed tongues together. Daddy said he'd
let me suck his tongue when I was bigger."

"Did he tell you that these things were 'family private' and that you
shouldn't tell anyone else?"

"He said I couldn't tell as long as he was alive - but he's dead now.
WAH! I MISS MY DADDEE!"

"Sit up and I'll hug you and rub your back."

"I feel safe but I'm getting sleep..."

Another wet and unconscious little girl. Dry her. Dry me. Carry her
to my bed. She only has underwear out, no gown or jammies. If that's
how she wants to sleep, that's what I'll do. Alarm set for another day
of school. Hope she makes it through the night, but the odds aren't
very good...
