"DADDY!! DADDY!! DADDY!!""

"What, Molly?"

"My bed's all wet and my tummy hurts!"

Water broke this soon? Not supposed to be due for at least two months.

"Let me wrap you in a blanket and call Dr. Chambers."

""What's wrong with Molly?""

"It looks like her water may have broken but it's way too early for
that. Get dressed quickly if you want to come with us to Dr. Chambers'
office."

Ring! Ring!

"It's 5:30AM on a Saturday. This better be important."

"It appears that Molly's water may have broken."

"That's important. I'll be at my office in five minutes. I need two of
those minutes to call some other people in. What about your other
girls?"

"They're coming with us."

"Get the door for me girls?"

"Got it, Papa."

"I'll get the elevator, Poppy."

"Floor 5."

"Already pushed and holding the door for you."

"You are the fast one, aren't you Sweetie? I remember you outran the
nurse another time I took Molly to see Dr. Chambers."

"I can run really fast when I have to."

"OK. Get the door to Dr. Chambers' office?"

"I'm just as fast, Papa."

"You are this morning, Rose."

"Back here, George. Most of the specialists are here and the others are
on their way. Now, let's see what Molly's problem is. Are you tender
here?"

"Some."

"What about here?"

"That's worse."

"And here?"

"OUCH!"

"Let me use the ultrasound. Hmm, that's a new development. Molly, you
have another baby growing in you."

"What?"

"It's VERY unusual for a girl who is pregnant to conceive another baby,
but I'm no longer surprised by how little we know about pregnant six
year olds. Your body seems to have decided to make more room for the
new baby by reducing the amount of amniotic fluid around the first two
babies. It's not enough to harm them but it's something we've never
seen before. I want you to come see me every day so I can check the
babies. That will be easy when school starts Monday - you'll be just
down the hall from me. I'm also restricting your physical activities -
no diving, no bike-riding, no levitation, no rough-housing with other
kids."

"You mean I can't do anything?"

"You may walk and swim - slowly, no racing or diving - you can still
read and work those 'mind stretcher' puzzles that you love."

"What about 'other stuff'?"

"Until we know what other changes may be happening in you body, 'other
stuff' is limited to external only: kissy-face, rubbing, etc."

"That's not fair!"

"Molly, whose request was it to get pregnant initially?"

"Mine, Daddy."

"Did I tell you that things might not work out as you thought they
world?"

"Yes, Daddy."

"Would you like a hug?"

"Yes!"

""Dr. Chambers, what can we do for Molly?""

"You'll be with her at school so you girls can watch her for being tired
and the like. Her Daddy will be distracted teaching and may not 'feel'
things a quickly as you will."

""We can do that.""

"Anything I should be especially concerned about, Willa?"

"No, George. You did the right thing by being extra cautious and having
us check her. Other than slowing her down physically and keeping a
close eye on her diet, there's not much else you can do. Considering
how wet she was, I was initially convinced that her water had broken and
we had already set up for an emergency C-section. I'm happy that none
of those preparations were needed. Molly, here's a dry gown and
blanket. You can change in the restroom then your Daddy can take you
back to your quarters. If you feel the need, you can extend your
afternoon rest to two hours. Today, you may want to nap part of that
time because you had a long, busy day yesterday and you're up very early
this morning."

"OK. Can I go back to sleep in your bed, Daddy?"

"Yes, Honey. And I expect you'll be back asleep before we get to the
elevator. Thank you, Willa."

"No, thank you and your girls for being so caring and supportive - not
just for Molly, but for Lily. Sheila told me some of the background of
why you had them do what they did, but the caring aspect is what
captured everyone's attention. Speaking of Sheila, Bill Jackson should
be picking her up - maybe I shouldn't use that phrase anymore? - about
now to go to the flight simulator. She's been up since 5 to be sure
they could spend 'all day' there."

"You're right. Terms like 'picking someone up' now have a very literal
meaning - and 'dropped like a hot potato' isn't meaningful when your
hands don't touch it. I'm sure we'll find new phrases to use."

"""Bye, Dr. Chambers."""

"I'm still amazed by their synchronization."

"Molly did that with Sarah and Rose, but she went back to sleep
immediately. It appears there are some other things we'll have to watch
to ensure Molly gets enough sleep."

"Sarah, Rose. I want to check both of you after school Monday. I don't
want another surprise baby, even one that's just a few days old."

"Yes, Dr. Chambers."

"No answer from you, Rose?"

"We haven't made a baby in me yet. But I might be pregnant tomorrow!"

"I know who's after you tonight, George."

"Molly crashed early last night, so she wound up in bed as soon as we
got to quarters. Sarah and Rose crashed shortly after that so each only
got a goodnight kiss. We'll see what tonight brings when it gets here."

"I got the elevator, Poppy."

"There's no hurry, this time, Sarah."

"I know. I just wanted to outrun Rose."

"I think that may be another limit - pregnant girls aren't allowed to
race. I don't know if you could be carrying a 'surprise' baby, but
until Dr. Chambers checks you I'll assume that you are. Sarah, you have
the same limits as Molly unless Dr. Chambers says otherwise Monday."

"That's not fair, Poppy!"

"Was waking up being scared for her babies fair to Molly? Do you want
to experience that?"

"No, Poppy. I don't want that either. I'll do it until Monday. But if
Dr. Chambers says it's OK, you have a lot of kissy-face and other stuff
to make up!"

"OK, little love monster. You get the door and I'll put Molly down in
my bed. I need to strip her bed and ensure the mattress is dry. Then
you two can help by getting fresh sheets and making the bed."

""We said we wanted to help.""

"Thank you, helpers. While you do that, I'll fix breakfast."

""Pancakes?""

"Two for each of you, to go with your eggs or your oatmeal."

"Eggs, Poppy."

"Oatmeal, Papa. But what will Molly eat?"

"When she wakes up, I'll ask her. Meanwhile, she needs to sleep. You
two get out the ingredients we need to make breakfast."

""OK.""

I'm amazed by how quickly they can switch gears - from planning
kissy-face to making breakfast.

"Do I smell pancakes, Daddy?"

"Yes, Honey, but remember that your limit is two. You may have eggs or
oatmeal with your pancakes."

"Eggs."

"I'll scramble the eggs and Rose can prepare her oatmeal. Breakfast
will be served in a couple of minutes. Do you remember what we're doing
today?"

"""Moving!"""

"You were so tired last night I wasn't sure you would remember. When
you finish breakfast, get dressed and we'll go measure our new quarters
and plan on who will be in which room. We have current and future
planning to do - 3 girls and me now, maybe Sheila starting Monday, then
all of us and 4 babies in a few months."

"How many rooms, Poppy?"

"Four bedrooms and three baths. You could each have your own room and
your babies could be in the room with you or you might choose to make
one room a nursery and share bedrooms. We'll talk more after you see
the space we have to work with."

Ring! Ring!

"Wilson."

"George, this is Ed Mason. I received updates from Gene Hanson and
General Stratton today. They found a way to tap the fiber links near
them. Both groups moved their non-perishable food with them and they
have had success in growing several varieties of the mushrooms. Their
diets are limited but everyone is OK. They both sent their thanks to
you for pointing them to potential survival sites."

"Thanks, Ed. It's good to know there are more survivors than just the
limited numbers in the Survival Buildings. You are aware of the
implications of the girls' success in 'flying' Lily's Dad here?"

"I was awake a long time last night considering that. Your 'ten years'
before talking about a spaceship ended yesterday, didn't it?"

"Yes and it means that Bill Jackson and I need to revise our lesson
plans yet again. I'll ask him to come by later today and we'll discuss
them. I think we can work out enough changes for the first couple of
weeks in one day, then we'll see what other changes are needed"

"Better you than me. I'm still catching up on what these girls can do!"

"Uncle Bill, can we stay in the simulator all day?"

"We have six hours, Sheila. Three hours before lunch and three hours
after."

"Can we skip lunch and just fly?"

"No. I told your mother I would take good care of you and that includes
ensuring that you eat properly."

"Properly? Does that mean you know I'm pregnant?"

"Yes, and it means I had Jack limit the maneuvers you can do in the
simulator - you won't be allowed to get above 3G's."

"That's no fun!"

"The simulator is for a transport craft, not a fighter. You can do
everything that is within its design limits at 3G's or less."

"But I want to fly something really fast!"

"Sorry, Sheila. Like most simulators, this one simulates a single type
of aircraft."

"Does it have seats for a pilot and co-pilot?"

"Yes. Because it's a large craft with long range, it also has a
navigator's seat."

"Then hurry up, co-pilot. I'm ready to fly!"

"Do you want to see the cabin familiarization video?"

"No. I'll know what all the controls and gauges do."

"How will you 'know' that?"

"The gauges when I read them. The controls when I touch them."

"Jack, can she hurt herself or the equipment if she goes in with no
prep?"

"Other than beating her fists on something that doesn't work as she
imagines, the setup I've arranged is safer than most amusement park
rides."

"Up the steps, Sheila. Pilot on the left."

"I know. You're on the right. Buckle up; you'll need it."

"Jack suggested that I take medication for motion sickness before we
started this - just in case you can't control the plane."

"You'll need that too, but not for lack of control."

"She's talks big, Bill."

"We'll find out whether her skills match her words."

"Preflight check, co-pilot."

"Yes, captain."

I'm not saying anything, but she's going through the items on this list
as though she had a copy on front of her. Maybe she's not all talk.

"AF375 to Tower. Permission to take off."

"Permission granted. Runway 27 left."

"That runway is 1500 feet shorter than this craft's recommended
minimum."

"Correction. Runway 19 left."

"That's better."

How did she know that?

"30 degree flaps, co-pilot. Ground speed 140. Nose up. Raise the
wheels."

"Bill, how does she know this?"

"I'm just doing what 'feels' right as I move the controls."

"Turn to heading 125. You are cleared to 26,000 feet."

"Roger. Heading 125 and 26,000."

Airspeed 230 in a climb? This plane can't do that!

"The plane can do that, but only at a certain combination of throttle,
climb angle, and flaps."

"How did you know?"

"I told you I could 'feel' the controls. Hold on for a barrel roll."

"You can't do that in this plane!"

"Sure I can - and it won't be over 3G's."

"Bill, how did she do that? I've seen one guy with more than a thousand
hours in the plane do it - but not as well."

"I don't know, Jack, but I'm ready for lunch. Is there a 'pause' mode
for the simulator?"

"Yes. Pausing in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. You're OK to exit now."

"When we get back, can you set the G limit up to 4? I need that for a
loop."

"Bill?"

"Go ahead, Jack. If she can do the roll at less than 3G's she can
probably do the loop also."

"Limit changed."

"Back in now?"

"No. Lunch now. I may not be able to control a hotshot pilot, but I
will ensure this little girl gets lunch."

"OK."

"Release the pause, Jack."

"In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. You're 'airborne' again."

"Hold on, Uncle Bill."

My body says she doing it - and so do the gauges. The simulator is also
making noises I've not heard from it before.

"How did she do that, Bill? The highest G was 3.8. I thought it was
impossible to loop this plane!"

"She's a natural born pilot, Jack. That's the only explanation I have."

"The Air Force would probably sign her up today."

"Only if they're faster and offer more money than Lockheed and Boeing."

"We still have two hours, Uncle Bill. I want to fly to the top of the
sky."

"You're the pilot. They plane has a rated operational limit..."

"Of 53,000 feet. It'll go higher - watch."

This time I'll wait before I comment. 51,000. 52,000. 53,000.
54,000. 55,000. 56,000 57,000, 58,000. She did it. But how?

"Now we can coast down."

Coast down? She killed the engines and this thing has a reputation of
gliding like a brick! The altimeter must be stuck - it's barely
dropping.

"I told you we would coast down. I'll restart the engines at 9000 feet.
You would tear the arms off the chair if I landed dead stick."

"You're right - and the motion sickness medication probably wouldn't be
strong enough."

"Landed and taxied to the starting point I knew this would be fun!"

"You OK, Bill?"

"I just need a couple of strong drinks, Jack."

"How much of that did you help her with?"

"Not any. I was too busy holding on!"

"Can you do that again, Sheila?"

"Sure. You wanna loop-the-loop?"

"Yes. I gotta see this for myself."

"Buckle up and hold on."

And she takes him for that same ride. I don't think I yelled like that.

"You didn't yell, Uncle Bill."

"Are you reading my mind?"

"Of course."

They're back down. I think the third loop was more than even Jack can
manage. Sheila has that "I wanna ride again" look you see on kids as
they get off a monster roller coaster. Neither Jack nor I believed much
of the "Origins" presentation - I need to watch it again to see what I
missed.

"Can you eat with us tonight, Uncle Bill?"

"That is something your mother must OK."

"I told her I would bring you."

"She has to confirm that."

"Hi, Mommy. Tell Uncle Bill that it's OK for him to stay and eat."

"Yes, Bill. She begged and pleaded last night until I agreed. I hope
you like meat loaf - Sheila insisted that I make it."

"One of my favorites, Willa. I see Sheila has been reading my mind for
a while."

"You better get used to that. I understand many, if not all, of the
girls have some mental communication abilities. You probably should
never think of the answers when you give a test at school."

"I'll put the wrong answer to every question on a copy of the test and
have that on my desk."

"That's not fair, Uncle Bill!"

"That's very fair, Sheila. You will be answering based on what you have
learned."

"I guess, but reading your mind for answers would be faster."

"School is about learning, not speed of answers. What you learn is with
you forever. An answer read from someone else's mind is only available
to you when that someone else is available."

"You're right, Uncle Bill. I guess that's what all good teachers would
do."

"Colonel Wilson and I will be using similar methods to ensure we test
what you have learned and not what you can read from another mind."

"Sheila, time for bed. Bill, thank you for taking her today. As she is
almost walking without touching the floor I think she had a 'high' time
today."

"Boo on your pun, Mommy. But I did have a great time. Thank you, Uncle
Bill. Can you stay long enough to tuck me in?"

"Yes, Sheila. I know you may need some time to run down, so I'll stay
as long as needed."

"Thank you, Bill. I'm glad the two of you get along so well."

"I wasn't sure if I would survive today. The simulator went through
maneuvers it had never done before. She has amazing control and 'feel'
for the plane. I'd fly anywhere with her as my pilot. Yes, I know I
just committed to having a six year old fly any craft I might be in."

"Come tuck me in."

"OK, I'm coming."

+@That's something else I want you to do, but we'll have to do it in
your quarters.

"How did you do that?"

+@You can too, I just need to find your mental image. Think kisses.

;Kiss. Kiss. Kiss.

+@That's good. I can 'hear' you. Now we can talk while we do
kissy-face. Kiss me. Rub my butt. Put your finger in it.

;OK if I do this one thing at a time? 'Talking' with you like this is
totally new to me.

+@Then kiss me. Give me your tongue!

;Here it is, little love monster. Just remember I need it to talk and
eat.

+@I won't suck it off - but I'll try!

;That's what I'm afraid of. Let me rub your nipples.

+@Be gentle. They're sore.

;And they're growing.

+@Put your finger in my butt!

;Just one?

+@As many as will fit!

;OK. Here's one. And two...

And she's gone. Underwear back up, ease her down to the pillow, and
slip quietly out of her room.

"Asleep so soon? I guess she did have a busy day. Thank you again,
Bill."

"You're welcome, Willa. But remember that I also had a good time
today."

"Molly, did you find answers to my questions?"

"Yes, Daddy. I asked 10 kids to let me 'read' them to see what their
skills were. They said it tickled a little but wasn't scary. The
youngest was 3. Her 7 year old sister went first and explained how it
felt. The 3 year old wasn't scared either. By the way, they are
medical people. The older sister said that her medical skills started
coming out when about 5. I then checked all the kids under 6. Here's a
list of names, ages, and skills."

"Thank you, Honey. That's very good research. What about the other
question?"

"Molly's been working on that one all day so I took the other question,
Poppy. All the sites have at least one pair of girls with the same
name. Oregon has two Molly Wilsons. The Molly we tested communications
with didn't know about the other one because she's only a year old.
However, she could 'talk' to the other girl when she located her.
Here's the list of places, the duplicated names, and their ages."

"Thank you, Sweetie. That's also very good research."

"I did family tree research on all the girls with duplicated names.
Each group is in the same family. The duplicated name was the name of
the wife of the 'starman' in their family."

"Thank you, Rose. That's also very good research."

"You still don't have a special name for me, Papa."

"I haven't forgotten, Rose. The right circumstances haven't happened to
give you that name."

"I know how you feel, Rose. It seemed like forever before Poppy had a
name for me, but it did happen."

"Time for bed, research staff. Get you jammies and brush your teeth -
don't tell me you can't all do it at the same time - there are three
bathrooms in our new quarters and each has two sinks."

"Who gets to sleep with you tonight, Daddy?"

"This one night, all three of you. No 'other stuff' - just all snuggle
together. Tomorrow we'll start the new schedule with each of you
sleeping with me two nights a week and one night I can sleep by myself.
Don't say anything now. You all agreed to try this for two weeks.
That's unless Sheila stays with us and is part of the sleep rotation."

"I think Rose should tonight - she's still waiting for you to make a
baby in her."

"That's sweet of you, Sarah, but Rose is already asleep."

"Sitting up?"

"Well, propped against me. You two get in bed and help me lay Rose
down. Snuggle in. I like having all me girls together."

"All but Sheila. She's family, too."

"She is family, Honey, but she has a parent to care for her. I know,
not the 'other stuff' the four of you want, but she does have a parent."

"G'night, Daddy."

"Goodnight, Molly."

"G'night, Poppy."

"Goodnight, Sarah."

They're ready to include Sheila in the family. Sheila has asked to stay
with us. Did the genetic changes make the 'other stuff' not just
something they're eager to do but something they need? Guess that's a
question for Will...
