It refused, of course. I finished my kata and gazed off at nothing before I looked down at my side. Sam was gone. He'd died in his sleep after a long life. A long life, spent first as my partner and then, for 10 years, my lover, too. I still missed him. That canine smile. The gentle paw that told me it was time for us to make love. Sam was gone--and it hurt. The jogging through the mountains helped. So did the kata. For awhile. I sighed and started jogging back home. Several minutes later something made me look down. A huge head, partially covered with a Biostruct combat helmet, was at my side. Another glance, this time at the body, and I realized the head was attached to one of the biggest Dobermans I'd ever seen. I started to stop. The head nudged my leg. "Keep moving. We'll talk after we finish our run." The voice answered my next question but it created others. Since when did a BP combat Doberman find time to share a morning jog with a grieving ex security, ex k9 handler? I kept jogging. It wasn't until we neared the end of my run that I realized we'd been pushing each other. I looked down and saw that he was grinning. "So," I panted. "Testing each other, are we?" I grinned back. "Sam used to do that to me. I guess he always figured I couldn't run fast enough to suit him." He ignored me and put on a sudden burst of speed. I held to my steady pace. When I reached the end of my run he was waiting for me. "No human can run fast enough to suit a dog. We learn to live with it." I nodded and walked in slow circles until my breathing returned to normal and I felt that my legs wouldn't cramp. I stopped and faced him. "Thanks for sharing my run. It helped." That massive head tilted to one side while he studied me. "I know. My nose told me when you decided to get on with your life." I stared at him. Brown eyes stared back. "Thanks for telling me. I wasn't aware that I wasn't living." There was a long silence. He snorted. After living with Sam for so long I knew it was a snort of amusement. "Good. Sarcasm. It means you really do give a shit about things." He settled on his haunches and grinned up at me. "Now that we both know you're alive, we can get to the real reason I'm here. I studied your records. I know about you and Sam. All of it." I blushed. "Yeah? So?" "Think you could work with a half-mad Doberman? A Doberman who's as horny as you are?" I froze and gaped at him. When I came out of my trance I looked lower and realized I was seeing a serious amount of bare penis. I chuckled ruefully and gave him the only answer that made sense: "Sniff my crotch." "Bare it." I started to laugh and then paused to study him closely. "You're serious, aren't you?" He sighed. "You have any idea about how damned hard it is to find a male human who's comfortably gay--with *dogs*? Of course I'm serious. Now, are we going to go inside and be discreet about this or do I get to rip your pants off and fuck you in front of the world?" I blinked and straightened. I decided right then that no self proclaimed 'half-mad Doberman' was going to out attitude me on my own turf-- even if we *were* going to be partners. "Stuff that prick back in your sheath and see if you can fit that ego through the dog door. It's never been locked since I put it in. I'm using the regular door and if I find you sprawled on the bed..." I grinned at his shock. "Well, I guess we'll be partners, won't we?" We glared at each other and then he smiled. "You'll do. Yeah, you'll do *just* fine. ---- "Community togetherness can lead to a consensus outlook that seeks and destroys any dissident element, no matter how small and really harmless" Dean R.
