Yotna's Reviews of The Summer Solstice Festival 2007

   One Hot Summer, or How Shaitan Made Mohammed His Bitch (MF,M/goat, MM)by
Sir Leo (Fatwah this!) Wulf

   Storyline

   <Brief outline only>

   Do I have to? Dare I? (Please note no goats were harmed during the
writing of thisreview!)

   This is the charming (TIC) story of a faithful goatherd, hisconversion
to Islam and human sexual partners via a somewhatdiabolical route.

   Reader discretion is advised; in fact I will add Leo's owncomments here.

   In which religious freaks who only respond to words with violencecan't
stop freedom of expression.

   Disclaimer: This story is about how Shaitan dictated the Quranto
Mohammed the Goat Fucker (peace be upon him) whilst fuckinghim up the ass.
If you don't like that, that's okay; you don'thave to read it. :p

   Oh yea: if you like this steaming pile of free expression (ornot) let me
know! Send your accolades (or death threats) toleowulf "at" gmail "dot"
com ...  I'm waiting!  ;)

   Reminder - it is Leo who is asking for the death threats. Notme!

   Merits

   <What was worthy of comment>

   The sheer audacity of the text combined with the pitiful mockeryof those
who use religion as a cover for nefarious activities arethe strongest
merits for the story. In addition a very healthydisregard for both
political correctness (hooray) and ascalding example in the correct use of
freedom of expression. Iboth understand the reason it was written and I
applaud thesentiment.

   It is also a witty (in places hilarious) romp through the natureof blind
faith (with the emphasis on the blind bit).

   Please note I will not be posting extracts (as is my habit). Iprefer
the reading of this story to be a deliberate act on thepart of the reader.

   Demerits

   <What detracted from the story>

   Well I can't ignore the contentious nature of it. Taken in theright
spirit this story debunks only those who would misusereligion.

   It will however hurt people. Undoubtedly some of them will begenuine
believers in 'true' Islam, which does not pursue themisguided aims that Leo
outlines in his introduction. That is thepenalty we (and they) must pay
for freedom.

   Although I have put this in demerits I personally feel thefreedom to
'publish and be damned' is more important than hurt toindividuals. If we
cannot be free to think and express ourthoughts without fear of
retribution, we are not free at all.

   Others will disagree. I have no doubt.

   Atmosphere <How well evolved was the environment> Marks out of 20

   <17>

   I need to think laterally here. The atmosphere is one of
savagepastiche. As such, it is keenly observed. It lacks any balance,but
then again, it never aimed to have any in the first place.

   So I look to the intended environment, which is one of unashamedfun
poking at those who hold 'blasphemy' to be crime punishable bydeath. Held
up to this measure the environment is highlypolished.

   Workflow

   <How well did the story progress and develop> Marks out of 20

   <17>

   Beginning, middle and end.

   Yes they are all there, as is the gradual progression in thebracketed
asides praising (or otherwise) the prophet and gods;which works well.

   I found the ending a bit sudden, but the final line says a lot(for me)
about the major weakness of all religious (and for thatcase, political)
systems; truth is too often the earliest victim.

   Eroticism <Just how erotic a read is this (erotic, not sexy!)> Marks
outof 20

   <10>

   Well it isn't erotic, and that is not its intent. All I feel Ican do
here is to score the piece neutrally.

   Mechanics

   <The boring bit, grammar, typo's etc.> Marks out of 20

   <17>

   Little to criticise, the usage of relevant language is closelyobserved.
If there are typo's or other issues they passed me byin a haze of
admiration for the debunking, combined with anuneasy guilt in reading the
story at all (I considered doing thisunder the bed covers by torchlight -
sigh - fond memories).

   But I soon got over my guilt; anyway what fun would life bewithout its
guilty pleasures? I read it and I fully subscribe tothe sentiment behind
it. Just as I am sure Salman Rushdie would!

   Impression

   <What did I feel having read the story, did I want to readmore?> Marks
out of 20

   <15>

   I admired the sentiment and the call for freedom. Personally, Iwill
always be a bit uncomfortable reading something that I knowwill hurt
others. But the fundamentalists do need to see thatsome (if not most) of us
will not be silenced by their inanethreats and insane actions.

   As an exercise in the debunking of 'bad' religion and standing upto
fundamentalism I applaud the story (loudly).

   I would have some sympathy however for those caught in thecollateral
damage the story will inflict; when all they have isa faith (even if it is
a misguided or misinterpreted one).

   Some pain is unavoidable, if regrettable. So I come downfirmly on the
side of the author. I feel this story plays thehighly intolerant at their
very own game.

   Well done Leo.

   Total score 76 Yotties out of 100. <An average score would therefore be
50> Readability guide 00-19 must try harder. 20-39 needs development 40-59
readable 60-79 good read 80-99 should read 100 reserved for my stories :-)
