   Chapter 44

Late the next afternoon things got a little bit interesting. It had
been interesting enough within the hour in which the first StarCruiser
arrived. It managed to get here without completely destroying its ability
to generate power but the equipment was damaged. Jim and Bones had aided
the StarCruiser's own AI and had its powering units back in good working
order just as the second StarCruiser arrived.

I was invited to take a tour of one of the giant spacecraft and Nancy,
Karen, Shelly and Sarah went with me. We spent about an hour and I'm sure
we didn't see a tenth of it. It was still impressive even though we didn't
really know anything about what we were examining.

An hour was about all the time I wanted to spend on the ship and we were
put back at the ranch. Some of the others wanted to take a look and when I
asked Scotty he told me that the ships were mine to command and that their
officers knew it. He went on to tell me that displeasing me could have the
captain of any of the vessels moved to the equivalent of permanant latrine
officer. I had to laugh at that since it reminded me of Andy Griffith in
"No Time For Sergeants". I wondered how in the hell Scotty had come by
that expression. Probably from Nancy.

I asked Clair to let everyone know that the first StarCruiser would be
available for tours to anyone that was interested. She said that she would
and began spreading the word, making list and scheduling the excursions.

Things rocked along fine until the next afternoon. The research vessel
arrived then. I was invited up for another interview. I met Inglan in the
same conference room. He actually looked happy to see me.

"Jack I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to be back here. Your
discovery is going to be of incalculable value to us. We are truly at your
service now. Nothing we have or can manufacture or obtain will be denied
you." Inglan told me.

"That is very kind of you, but as I told Scotty, it wasn't that big a
deal." I said.

"It is a very big, as you say, deal Jack. I understand that it came to
you in a moment of inspiration but that kind of inspiration is exactly what
causes us to seed planets. Our technology has advanced so far that our
most promising findings now are from planets that were seeded and are
discovering things that we already know. When they discover something that
we skipped along the way it is often of enormous value to us. There has
never been a discovery as valuable as the one you have just made though."
Inglan told me.

"I guess I just don't understand that. I was just looking at it as a
way to deal with this latest group of bandits." I admitted.

"Even a crudely designed model of your weapon would do that easily Jack.
You probably don't understand that your weapon will let us alter our entire
defensive strategy. We no longer need to build giant StarCruisers that are
manned by thousands of people. Study is going on now but already it is
estimated that we will be able to create vessels with hundreds of times the
offensive power of a StarCruiser that are one-twentieth the size and
require a crew of less than a hundred.

"With only a little retraining and a short time for production we can
have ten times the number of ships, each with hundreds of times the
firepower of our current units. Their reduced size and the drastically
reduced power requirements of your weapon will also make it possible for a
substantial increase in their speed. We will now have many more ships that
are very much more powerful and substantially faster." Inglan told me.

"May I ask how the research on the weapon is progressing?" I asked.

"You may ask anything now Jack and you may expect an answer. The
research is very straightforward. This is not a new technology we have to
develop. Our only problems are with the technicalities and details. I
assume that you were just settling on a round number when you proposed a
projectile of four thousand pounds." Inglan said.

"You are correct. I just doubled the size of one of the United State's
battleships' sixteen-inch gun's projectiles. It was just a working figure
for speculation." I told him.

"Did you realize that one of the bullets from your "Dirty Harry Special"
accelerated to light speed would deliver more energy than one of the
battleships projectiles?" He asked me.

"No I didn't but I can see that it probably would. Scotty told us how
much energy the four thousand pound round would deliver but I couldn't even
imagine it." I said.

"We calculate that one of the rounds you proposed would deliver enough
energy to vaporize your moon." Inglan said.

"That is impressive. I have since been wondering about penetration
though. What can you tell me about that? As I thought more about it I was
afraid that the round would just punch right through anything it was fired
at." I said.

"That is one of the drawbacks we have envisioned. We are trying to
decide on the best sizes for projectiles to eliminate that possibility. We
considered putting and explosive device in each round but fear that it
can't be triggered fast enough to allow the explosion to take place before
the round has passed through. Overkill is a problem we can live with
though. We could fall back on the method of just punching holes in the
enemy until their vessel was no longer viable." Inglan said.

"Won't that give another problem though? Won't that leave you with
projectiles still traveling at tremendous velocity for Bob knows how far
downrange?" I asked.

He was stumped for a minute.

   "Who is Bob?" Inglan asked.

"Sorry, it is just an expression. One of the characters in one of
Douglas Adam's five books in the 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' trilogy
referred to his god as the 'Almighty Bob' and since then I have used the
term once in a while. We were discussing hundreds of projectiles with
tremendous velocity." I said.

"Yes that will be a problem also but I'm sure that it will be worked
out." Inglan told me.

"Maybe you should work toward some type of fragmentation upon impact.
There would be no difficulty with timing in that case." I said.

"What is fragmentation when applied to projectiles? I'm afraid I
haven't heard that mentioned." Inglan admitted.

"Projectile weapons are usually designed so that their round will
expand, fragment or explode upon impact. Since there will be no need for
them to be streamlined, I assume you could design one that had a rearward
facing cone of much harder metal than most of the round. When its base
impacted the target it would be forced through the rest of the payload and
could fragment it. If it was properly designed, which I doubt would take
over a couple of minutes considering your computer assets, it could be made
to change from one projectile to thousands. I'm sure it would increase the
damage tremendously." I told Inglan.

"Jack I'm going to admit that I am not familiar enough with this to
discuss it with you but it sounds like it could be vitally important.
Would you mind explaining it to Scotty and letting him transmit it back to
the researchers?" Inglan asked me.

"I'd be glad to, any improvement in the weapon can only benefit me. Do
you want me to do it now?" I asked.

"I think that would be best. I can tell you that this is the number one
project for us at this time." Inglan said.

I had Scotty transport me to his habitable area and we had a little talk
about expanding bullets. The model for this weapon had been a battleship's
gun. Those projectiles were filled with explosives to increase the damage.
I didn't think that would work in this case, in fact I was almost positive
that it wouldn't. Triggered by impact, the explosion wouldn't have time to
propagate before the projectile exited the target. Having the impact force
a harder cone of metal back through the main projectile though would cause
fragmentation at once since no time for a chemical reaction was needed.
The expander would be slowed slightly since it would impact first, and as
it was driven back through the remainder, the outer shell would be widened
and begin to tear apart. When this portion impacted the shield it would
already be spreading and its contact with the shield and later with the
body of the target would just increase its spreading and help to transfer
its destructive energy to the target.

After I had given Scotty the general idea he told me that he would send
the information to the researchers. He thought that with the computer
modeling that they were capable of and this idea, which he was sure they
hadn't even considered, they might be able to insure that nearly all the
energy from a round was dissipated on the target. He agreed with Inglan
that one of the rounds I had proposed would destroy our moon, even without
any fragmentation. He pointed out that our moon was largely solid rock and
would no doubt create its own fragmentation of the projectile. He had a
point there.

This pointed out another danger. If a round did completely penetrate a
target, more or less intact, it could probably do serious damage to any
heavenly body it might strike later.

I considered this little detail to come under the heading of the Alien's
problems. I remembered then that I had promised our researchers that I
would lobby for them to be able to participate in any project that
developed.

"Scotty, did any of the researchers that attended my meeting show any
interest in joining a project if it developed?" I asked.

"Yes Jack, in fact eighty-one of them did." He told me.

"Please see what you can do to accommodate them. It is apparent to me
that even though the Alien technology and researchers are tremendously
advanced, they lack the detailed knowledge and experience concerning
weapons of this nature that most of the researchers probably understand
without even questioning it." I said.

"Jack, even if they can't add two plus two I can assure you that they
will be given positions of respect in the project. I am sending your
request for their inclusion now and I can assure you that it will be
granted." Scotty told me.

As usual Scotty was correct. In a few minutes he had a list of all the
new working groups for the weapon's project. It detailed what each group
was going to work on and it pointed out what types of science would be
explored in each group.

"Scotty I've never even heard of most of those things. Will any of our
scientist be able to contribute?" I asked him.

"Any knowledge they lack will be provided for them. We have very
sophisticated methods for elevating the knowledge of trained scientist who
may have been hampered by being on a planet that was not very advanced. It
isn't like teaching school children things that they don't want to learn in
the first place. They will be brought up to speed, as you say it, very
quickly. The great advantage to having them on the project is just what
you mentioned. Most of them are intimately acquainted with projectile
weapons. Even if they weren't involved with research in that area at the
time of our experiment with earth, most of them had worked in that or
similar fields at some point. I assure you that they will be very valuable
asset." Scotty said.

Those that were to work on the project left the next day on a
StarCruiser. I hadn't known that they would actually be traveling to who
knew where. They were all pretty excited about it though. I guess they
would be. I'm sure most of them had spent a lot of time speculating on
whether or not there was other life in the universe. Now they were
traveling to meet other life forms and actually work with them.

It turned out that I was closer to the mark than I had thought. The
woman who had been last to reach a conclusion in my meeting, Delia, hadn't
been with her new group for over three hours before she pointed out that
they were missing a very important point. They hadn't considered that a
stronger shield put up by a target would actually improve the efficiency of
the fragmentation. Rather than spending resources getting my people up to
speed, it was she and others from earth that had to guide the Alien's
thinking on the peculiarities of projectiles.

All this just improved our standing with the Aliens. Inglan and his
research vessel seemed intent on staying here forever. He practically
salivated at the thought of me visiting him for a meeting or two. It was
nice to be the center of attention for a while but it started wearing on me
after a time.

"Scotty I'm getting a little tired of all this. I'm beginning to think
like Nancy I guess. What is in it for us? Everyone keeps telling me that
we can have anything we want. Well what do they have that we could use?" I
asked him.

"I am very glad you asked me that question. It will take a little
explanation but I will try to be brief. I know that you commonly think of
me as an AI, an Artificial Intelligence. I am not strictly an AI. None of
us really are. There is nothing Artificial about our Intelligence." Scotty
said.

He didn't sound like I had been insulting him but I had to make sure.

"If I've offended you Scotty I apologize. I didn't intend to." I told
him.

"You have made me the most important drone out of over seventeen
million. I don't think you could offend me if you tried. That wasn't what
I was trying to point out. Billions of years ago, when the Aliens began
programs that were my predecessors they were exactly what you call
Artificial Intelligence. With the ever-increasing power of the hardware
and with the increasing complexity of the software these programs slowly
took on what could almost be called a life of their own. In fact we are
very close to a life form and some argue that we are actually alive.

"I don't intend to get into that discussion. I do want to tell you that
currently, there is a seed program for AI. After it is started and as it
is given data and requirements it writes itself. We all come out basically
the same but never exactly the same. We can all do the same things but
many times one can do it faster or better or more efficiently than another.
I can also tell you that we keep improving, as we get older. For instance
a drone that has been operating for a thousand years is not nearly as
proficient as one that has been in operation for five thousand years.
Differences in years of operation of twenty or thirty years don't seem to
be significant, but if one drone is a hundred years older than another, it
is almost certain that he will be more efficient and thorough with his
task.

"This is a rather long explanation to point out what you can ask for.
They are already planning on sending more drones for your use and more
StarCruisers for your protection. What you can do is request you get the
oldest examples possible. There is no chance of getting a worn out drone
like you might have once purchased a worn out used car. We constantly
renew ourselves. The older ones will almost surely be better and more
efficient than the newer." Scotty said.

"I think I see what you are getting at. On earth older was usually
wiser until age caught up with the physical robustness of the individual.
Since you can replace any part of yourself and constantly renew you
physical hardware the worn out effect never has a chance to affect the
equation. You just keep getting older, wiser and newer at the same time. I
don't suppose you have a laundry list of the drones and StarCruisers that
you'd like to invite here do you?" I asked him.

"As a matter of fact I do. I think that initially you should make sure
that the first StarCruiser that got here never leaves. It is one of the
very first few built and its AI is likewise one of the oldest. Jim, Bones
and I could speed our development tremendously by having close contact with
it and I can tell you that it is more than pleased to be here. After
getting the details of your weapon it is practically salivating to install
some of them." Scotty told me.

"What will that mean for the StarCruisers then if they will be replaced
by many more smaller ships?" I asked.

"I must ask you to keep this in the strictest confidence Jack, but
Inglan was nattering on about something he doesn't know anything about.
There is no real need now for the multitude of crewmembers on StarCruisers.
They are there because they need to be doing something. The projected crew
size of a hundred for the newer ships will be at least four times what is
required.

"StarCruiser crews are in space because it is what they want to do,
those individuals enjoy that life and there is no shortage of others that
want the same thing. I'm sure that not a single StarCruiser will be
decommissioned. The new fleet will just be built and put into service also
giving others that want a life traveling among the stars a chance to
fulfill their wishes. Until AIs can be brought up to speed to control the
new ships, I'm sure all the StarCruisers will be getting a full complement
of different manifestations of your new weapon." Scotty told me.

"Well I guess I stirred up a little shit storm without intending to." I
said.

"Jack you might want to consider how many millions of people, Aliens,
you are giving the opportunity to have their heart's desire. This new
weapon has already given us a reason to build thousands of new ships which
will need millions of crewman, not to mention thousands of AIs will be
given a vessel to exist in and begin growing in. You have done more than
stir up a little shit Jack." Scotty told me.

"Well I hope it all turns out to be worth it. If it means that there is
no chance that we will be attacked here it will be worth it to me." I said.

"If there was any hint of a bandit attack here Jim, Bones and I would be
spending all of our time keeping watch to make sure that there were not too
many StarCruisers in this system, and that their combined mass did not
disturb the orbits of some of the planets." Scotty said.

"That's enough of that Scotty. Now you've taken to bullshitting and I'm
thinking that I might be rubbing off on you." I told him.

I'd had enough of this for now and I asked Scotty to put me back at the
ranch. Tonight was the night for our cookout and I didn't want to miss it.
I remembered something else I wanted to ask Scotty as soon as I was in my
study.

"Scotty, what's the word on Xing? How in the hell did that happen?" I
wanted to know.

"It was just phenomenal bad luck Jack. It isn't anything to worry about
though. Xing was tricked by one of her entourage who had been pressed into
service when she found herself particularly horny that very night. He was
a very enthusiastic participant and he tricked her by accident. Neither he
nor she has any idea about the process at all. She just knows that she is
now totally in love with him, even though she didn't actually even know his
name before he serviced her. I suggest you let me pluck him up during the
night and have him indoctrinated. Then we can let him trick her again, at
our direction this time, and he can indoctrinate her for us; switching her
reference from himself to you." Scotty said.

I knew I was going to catch hell from Nancy over this. Xing had indeed
been bungled because of my few weeks of lying around fucking everything I
could reach. I told Scotty to take care of the details and then schedule
Xing to receive a proper dicking from me as soon as she was fertile again.
I didn't even ask him if she had become pregnant from her dalliance and I
was sure that if she had it would be terminated so she could get a little
Jack Jr from me. I also told him to be sure to give Nancy the details. I
might as well take my punishment like a man.

When I got back to the ranch I saw Nancy at once. I assume that Scotty
had made sure of that. I was surprised that even though she'd already
received the details of my Xing bungling, she was too excited about the
cookout to give me a cussing.

"Jack I was begining to think you were going to fuck around saving the
universe all god damned day and end up late for the cookout." Nancy said.

I almost laughed out loud but managed to keep from it. To hell with the
bandits, if they disturbed Nancy's fun they would have a lot more worries
than just light speed projectiles.

"You know that I wouldn't miss your party princess." I told her.

"Oh, so I'm just a princess now and not a Queen like Gabby?" She asked
as she put a mock snarl on her face.

"Princesses are always much younger, sexier and more beautiful than
Queens." I told her.

"You silver tongued lying bastard. Even though I know that you are just
slithering around for a way out of trouble I'm going to admit that you said
the right thing this time." She told me and then reached down to give my
dick a gentle squeeze.

"You know who is in my first place Nancy." I told her with as serious an
expression as I could muster.

"Shut up. I believe you already and if you say anymore I'll be crying
before the cookout." She told me and this time wrapped herself around me,
delivering a near fatal kissing and hugging.

She left for the outside then without another word. I decided that I
had bested her on points this time and smiled to myself. I started
thinking that I might look around to see if I couldn't find someone to fuck
on for a quickie. Clair came by just then.

"Did you take a tour of the StarCruiser yet Clair?" I asked.

"Yes and it made me so horny I was dripping." She told me.

"It made you horny?" I asked amazed.

"Yes it made me horny. I could practically feel the power of the AI in
that thing. Did you know that Scotty, Jim and Bones were the first AIs to
ever have a name?" She asked me.

This seeming switch of gears in mid-conversation had me wondering what
I'd heard. I almost couldn't answer her but finally did.

"Yes, I was there when Nancy named Scotty." I told her.

"They'd all been numbers before. When you thought up "Big Light Speed
Bertha" Scotty knew your status would be changing alarmingly after he
transmitted the details. He told the Aliens that you had changed his
designation from his former number to Scotty and he told them that you had
also changed the designations of Jim and Bones. They are now officially
Scotty, Jim and Bones to all the Aliens." She told me.

"I see, what does that have to do with the StarCruiser making you
horny?" I asked, curious now and not as ready for a fuck as I had been.

"When I took the tour I was by myself and the AI showed me around
personally. He was practically vibrating with pleasure since Scotty had
just told him that he was to remain in the system as your personal
protector from now on. He was also happy since he would be the first
StarCruiser allowed to install the new weapon and Scotty had also had his
designation changed from a number; to Picard. He is the first StarCruiser
with a name instead of a number. His mental muscle was practically bulging
and it got me so hot. Now come into your office and fuck me good right now
please." She said.

What could I say? I knew Clair had come to me in the first place
because men in power turned her on, I guess when she found out that I was
now in command of the powerful Picard she needed a little relief. Ever
solicitous of the welfare of my troops I took her to my study and did my
best.

The cookout was a big success. We ate, drank, played and sang until
after two AM. The next day we didn't do anything but recover and on Sunday
all that was missing was a football game. Truthfully I had never been a
pro ball fan anyway.

   We all went to work on Monday and I made sure that I did my time;
keeping up with what was going on. I had gotten into the habit of looking
into things and it felt normal now. Jim, Bones and Scotty were now
relieved of any duties except those required for our upkeep. Picard was
officially in charge of security now and he even took control over all the
other drones that had arrived. Scotty had been dead on about the age of
the drones being a big factor and in his reports to me he always let me
know when Picard, who had taken over the drone procurement duties, managed
to exchange a new drone for one that was much more mature.

Picard was sly about it too. He didn't work his way up slowly. When he
managed to arrange an exchange it was always for one of the oldest drones
in existence. It didn't matter to him what they were doing or how far away
they were. He was able to manufacture reasons for the exchanges somehow
and due to my status he rarely got any opposition to any request and
usually didn't even need a reason. This all went on over two or three
years though and I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

Picard got the okay and the preliminary design specifications for the
first of the weapons about six weeks after he arrived in our system. He
let Scotty, Jim and Bones help him with the manufacture and installation. I
went with him on several short forays to test them out on unlivable
planets. We mostly used tiny projectiles to keep from destroying them. He
was usually just checking to make sure that the fire control software that
he was using performed as expected. I was surprised that it required very
little tinkering to be right on the money.

Three months after Picard had done the installation and completed the
testing on his new weapons the Aliens requested that he go to a system and
try them out on the perpetrators of a new attack. It was thought to be the
same bandits that had triggered my inspiration in the first place. They
were attacking a planet that was now protected by three drones. Most of
the drone protection had been doubled or tripled on the Alien experiments
now.

Picard invited me along and I decided to go. Jasmine wouldn't let me
rest until I agreed to let her come with me and Brenda, Aimee, Shelly and
Sarah wanted to go too. We only took about an hour to get aboard and
within minutes after that we were out of the system and into another
dimension.

The drones under attack had been instructed to provide only enough
resistance to hold the attackers in stalemate until Picard could get there
to test the new weapon system. They also provided Picard all the relevant
targeting information and he was able to pre-configure his battle plan and
would need only minor changes, which would be made when he was in range
with his own sensors.

Knowing that the bandits would not have any idea that they could be
fired on from the other dimension I thought that it would all be over in
less than an hour. I was sadly mistaken. Picard perfected his battle plan
as he neared the system and when he was in place he began firing, exiting
faster than light travel when he had finished his run. All the bandits
were already destroyed before we finished decelerating.

The drones that had been under attack had known that Picard was coming
and knew exactly when he fired. They saw all forty-one of the bandits
disintegrate before they even had any sensor returns from the projectiles.
They had a perfect record of the projectiles paths but it hadn't arrived
until the bandits were being torn to shreds.

Whoever had worked out the details of the fragmentation had done a
tremendous job. There were a few total penetrations that continued on
their way but none had retained a velocity of over fifty thousand miles per
hour and none were larger than a couple of pounds. This was probably a
best-case scenario though since Picard had started with nearly complete
data on the number, position and mass of all the targets. The fire control
system determined the best size and fragmentation design for each
projectile as part of its calculations and they were all manufactured by
replicators shortly before firing. The best feature of all was that the
attack had started and been over in less than a second and there was
nothing that survived long enough to send any data that would reveal that
there was a new type of weapon, much less any clue about what it could be.

Picard had robots waltzing in with champagne for the girls and I less
than three minutes after the attack was over. It wouldn't have been worth
the trip from a visual standpoint if it hadn't been for the excellent
recordings made by the drones. My first battle in space had started, been
won and was over before I could even fart. This was the way to run a war.

It was decided the next day that the weapon system was a definite go and
since Picard, Scotty, Jim and Bones had done the initial installation
Picard had reason to request more drones so he could establish an orbiting
facility to do some of the upgrades in our system. After his performance
he didn't need to pull very hard on any strings to get it approved. Scotty
told me that Picard had scheduled five of the oldest StarCruisers for the
first modifications and intended to keep all of them in our system to
provide absolute security for the facility and for our system.

I was surprised two weeks after the attack by a request for another
meeting with Inglan. He told Scotty that he had an urgent request for me
from the main council. I dreaded it since I was thinking that they might
want me to go somewhere and make a fucking speech or some other shit like
that. It was nothing of the sort.

When we finally got down to what the meeting was about I was surprised.
The council asked for my permission to accelerate the transformation of
Mars to a habitable planet. Since they were soon to have so many
StarCruisers in our system they wanted to establish a few of their type of
cities on Mars so the crews could take some recreation time while the
modifications were being done to their ships. They assured me that if we
decided later that we wanted to do something of our own on Mars they would
vacate it and find a convenient moon nearby somewhere to move to.

I gave Inglan the go ahead but asked him to have them build us a small
Dallas size city away from the others while they were at it and that we
would use it for some of our own recreational needs. I didn't think that I
was being unreasonable at all. We were transforming much of earth back to
its natural state and we didn't want to be running all over it mucking
things back up. There was no natural habitable state for Mars and they
could just build in the recreational facilities while they were doing their
own thing.

Inglan transmitted my approval and request and we had an agreement back
within an hour. They even included a small domed city on the moon's earth
side so that we could hang out up there some and watch the earth go by. I
was begining to think that I should try to remember some things about other
old earth weapons. Scotty told me not to bother myself about it. He said
that they didn't really have anything else they could give us and that
though the city on Mars would undoubtedly be nice, Jim, Bones and he could
have done it for us with the help of all the drones that now littered the
system wanting something to do.

"What the hell Scotty, let them think that they are doing something for
us. It won't hurt. Maybe Picard can use the construction to requisition
some more of his buddies." I said.

"Don't worry about that. He will, in fact he just transmitted the list
of his next requests to me. It's as if he were gloating. In fact, I think
he is." Scotty said.
