   Chapter 37

It felt a little odd to me to just walk back out into the kitchen.
There were a few people there but none that were especially close to me.
Continuing through the kitchen and out into the cafeteria let me spot
Nancy, Shelly, Sarah and Seven sitting at a table with their lunch. Nancy
happened to look up and see me.

"Long Dick where have you been?" Nancy asked practically screaming.

Rolling my eyes toward heaven and shrugging my shoulders occupied my
time until I reached them and sat down. It was time for a little
explanation soon but not now. Simply answering 'later' to their questions
allowed time for telling Amber what to bring me for lunch. A Long Neck was
my first requests. Shortly after lunch was finished I got a status report
from the drone. It told me that it was now in orbit around earth and that
our communication would now be instantaneous.

"How were they able to move you so fast?"

"You are no longer allowed to share the specifics of that information.
Please accept my apology." The drone said.

Our communication was instantaneous now. Telling the drone that the new
limitations didn't bother me led to asking it to share any of the procedure
with me that was allowed.

"That is simple Jack. You didn't see the ship the Aliens arrived in.
You should understand that it brought two additional drones with it and
that it is capable of carrying four at any one time." The drone told me.

The drone was about one third the size of earth's moon. That must
mean... Goddammit! They must have one hell of a spaceship to scoot around
in.

"Are all the Alien's ships that large?"

"They came in a research vessel Jack. A fully equipped StarCruiser is
nearly half again as large as the ship you were in. Of course a
StarCruiser wouldn't carry more than two drones. Most of their size is
devoted to energy generation. The power is needed for its weapons systems
and for its increased speed." The drone explained.

"Can you tell me how fast they travel?"

"A StarCruiser can traverse four to five parsecs per second if it is
required." The drone told me.

Jesus. If memory served me correctly that amounted to twelve to sixteen
light years per second.

"How do they keep from colliding with other objects?"

"In the first place space is a vacuum and other objects are scarce.
That really doesn't matter though because they are not actually traveling
in space, as you know it. I'm sure you are familiar with the concept if
you have ever viewed earth's movies about StarTrek. The process is nothing
like the one that the movies portray but the analogy is serviceable and I'm
not allowed to give you those details.

"Jack you should also know that there is space dedicated to habitation
aboard me. If you would like to see the ship you were on or if any of you
would like a look at earth or space from here it would be simple to bring
you here." The drone told me.

"We are permitted to see the Alien's ship then?"

"Yes. My query to them about that was answered in the affirmative.
They are not concerned in that regard." It said.

"Is the transport technology available to me now?"

   "Certainly." It said.

"What are the technology's limits as far as distance, weight and such?"

"Transportation is limited by computer power more than any other factor.
Living sentient beings are the most difficult to transport because no loss
can be allowed. Living non-sentient animals require about half the
computer power of an equal weight of sentient beings. Complicated computer
equipment or similar things require about one-tenth the resources of
non-sentient animals. I can safely transport approximately thirty thousand
humans per minute to any destination in this solar system." The drone
reported.

"That is not a limit that will pose a hardship. How many humans could
occupy the space you have available?"

"Approximately two thousand could be comfortable here at any one time."
The drone said.

   "Would we be weightless there?"

"That would be your decision. Use of that technology is allowed to
accommodate my visitors but sharing the details with you is forbidden. It
is very advanced from your present technology. The transport technology
would have been perfected on earth within fifty to one hundred years.
Manipulation of gravity was expected to have taken fifteen hundred years at
least.

"You probably realize that no one on earth knew how gravity's force was
transmitted. Most of what they thought they knew about gravity, which
wasn't much, was incorrect." The drone explained.

Instructing the drone to make sure the Alien's ship would be visible
after we were transported was next. Then my virus transmitted messages to
Nancy, Shelly, Sarah, Karen, Jana, Beverly, Diane, Janet, Jena, Sharon,
Aimee, Susan, Amber, Julia, Gloria, Brenda, Helen, Jasmine, Genine, Kelly,
Clair and Seven, who were all at the place, to gather in my study.
Margaret, Sparkle and my entire bodyguard were instructed to gather in my
bedroom at the hotel.

After ducking into a restroom the drone transported me from there to the
large observation area inside itself. Even expecting what was going to
happen and what would be seen wasn't preparation enough. The view was
breath taking. It was like nothing else in my experience.

The earth was a beautiful blue gem with brilliantly white clouds
swirling over it. The moon shown like a large silver ball and the craters
and mountains cast eerie shadows that accentuated the starkness. The
Alien's ship was just far enough away to fit completely in view without
obstructing either the earth or the moon. It was amazing. It was
spherical and was much larger than our moon. It must have had observation
portals also since light shown out from them like giant searchlight beams
in some places.

The girl's appearance would have caught me unaware if a reflection of it
hadn't shown on the observation portal's surface. Visibly it was very
similar to the effect that had been portrayed in StarTrek. There was less
color and more shimmer though. Since no actual transporter pad seemed
necessary there was also no sign that they were being projected down from
above. They just seemed to materialize out from within. They arrived
facing the portal and were arranged so that the view out it was the first
think they would see when they opened their eyes. My earlier experience
had shown me that it was natural to close your eyes as it happened and open
them slowly when transportation was finished.

They were all silent for a second or two and then they all seemed to
inhale in a near gasp together as if on cue. Like me before, they were all
stunned.

"My God Big Dick. Where are we?" Nancy asked demandingly.

   "We are in the drone."

"How in hell did we get here and can we go back when we get ready?"
Nancy asked.

"Hell Nancy it's like StarTrek. I had you all beamed up. There isn't a
Scotty here though. We can go back anytime. Just make sure you don't
tease me until you make me want to leave you here."

"You ready to go back to saying Yes Mam or No Mam when you speak to me?"
Nancy asked grinning.

   "No Mam."

"Good. Glad we got that straight. Try not to piss off your betters."
Nancy said teasing me more.

   "Yes Mam."

"Cut that shit out too." Nancy said.

   "OK."

At least the tension was broken now. They just stared at the spectacle
before them in silent awe. It was unbelievable at first.

"You all realize that you shouldn't tell anyone else about this don't
you?"

They all signaled their assent and kept staring.

"That is the Alien ship of course. It is the same one they used to come
to earth for the terminations. It is a research vessel and according to
the drone it is a fairly small model. We are inside the drone and that
ship can carry four drones. The Aliens returned because they were
delighted with the progress we've made since they left. Aimee is the cause
of the progress. Her communication with her virus and with the drone is
directly responsible for our new safety. The Aliens have told me that
Aimee's discoveries have paid earth's bill for its existence. We owe her
our thanks.

Applause broke out and Aimee was embarrassed at once.

"We should probably give Johnny a pat on the back when we get back. If
my memory is correct he had a little part in it too."

Laughter broke out among those in the know and Aimee blushed scarlet.
It was all in fun though and everyone was appreciative of Aimee's
discoveries now.

"This demonstration seemed to be the best way to show you all what was
going on. The drone will prepare a report for all of you with the
pertinent information and you can feel free to ask for clarification on
anything that isn't clear. My planning wasn't the best and we don't have
any refreshments here. Maybe I can get the drone to transport some up for
us."

The drone broke into my thoughts just then. It told me that we could
get any refreshments we wanted here.

"Are you that well stocked already?"

"It is another StarTrek type technology. It is a shame your scientist
didn't make more effort to create what the StarTrek writers imagined. The
replicator, to use a term familiar to you, technology is very similar to
the transport technology. The details of the technology are not to be
released directly but you are free to use it here since several of the
devices are available. As you know the transport technology is available
to you and once you have a scientific research team examine that technology
you should be able to duplicate the replicator technology shortly." The
drone explained.

"Where should we go to replicate a few magnums of champagne?"

"Some of the robots can bring it. Why not sit down, relax and enjoy the
view?" The drone asked.

Suddenly several large overstuffed sofas appeared. There were coffee
tables in front of them and end tables for all. We all found seats and
then six robots walked in carrying four standing ice buckets each. There
was a magnum of champagne in each silver bucket. The robots were a wonder
of their own. They were bipedal and had basically two arms but they also
had extra extensible limbs that seemed to fold into their bodies when not
needed. The robots opened the champagne and poured it into the flutes that
they had carried on large silver trays on an additional limb. No human
could have walked carrying what the robots did without dropping something
along the way.

It seemed tonight was going to be full of surprises. We all drank
several toasts to the robots, the drone, the transporters, the replicators
and the Aliens. By now it only seemed a little strange to be
congratulating a race that had recently killed ninety-eight percent of our
fellows. After a few glasses of the excellent champagne it didn't seem
strange at all.

When the champagne was finished we were all in a wonderful mood
naturally. The drone did its next trick then. The gravity he had
furnished us with was simply turned off and all the furniture, the robots
and the champagne and its paraphernalia were removed. We had all been
seated but now we didn't need the couches. At first we just seemed to
hover in place. As soon as anyone tried to move they started to drift.
Within sixty seconds we were all moving about directionless with little or
no control over our trajectory.

Any contact with the floor or walls allowed us to launch ourselves in a
direction and move with seeming purpose. Being caught unaware when the
gravity left had most of us suspended unable to touch anything though. A
few could push off others that were close enough but this wasn't very
helpful since it had been done thoughtlessly before we'd realized what was
happening.

The area we were in was large and soon we were all headed nowhere with
nothing in reach to push off against. Hanna happened to drift slowly near
me and we reached for each other but couldn't touch. It was fun for a
while and was a good gee whiz demonstration. Just as it was about to
become boring the drone gently restored the gravity and we settled back to
the floor.

"It's been fun Big Dick but I'm about ready for a little nap. Can
Scotty beam us back home for a snooze?" Nancy asked.

"Probably, why don't you ask Scotty yourself? By the way, have you just
christened the drone?"

"Why not? Scotty is a good name. Better than calling it the drone all
the time." Nancy said.

"Scotty is acceptable to me. I may be the first drone that's ever had a
name. I will transport you all back now if that is your wish." Scotty
said.

"It is probably best. We can return can't we?"

"Certainly. You need only ask. You realize that the transport
technology is available to you anytime now don't you. You can be
transported anywhere in this system at anytime. You may also have anyone
or anything transported anywhere in this system." Scotty told me.

I should have realized this but hadn't. This technology was something
undreamed of and its possibilities were endless. On my signal Scotty put
us all back where we'd been.

It was time for me to try to assimilate these recent developments.

Scotty had sent be back to the hotel with Margaret and Sparkle and had
put my bodyguard back with us. With this new technology the bodyguard
wasn't really needed now if it had ever really been necessary. Scotty
would remove me instantly from any dangerous situation. The women were
assigned to me though and weren't really needed anywhere else. What the
hell; might as well keep them around, they were good company.

Margaret, Sparkle and I had a lot to talk about but I felt we needed to
separate and just consider our new potential for a while. We went to our
separate offices and I had the bodyguards take a few hours off.
