   Chapter 36

   My virus woke me at six-thirty AM.  It didn't say anything to me or give
me a message it just woke me.  Getting out of bed and heading to the shower
without waking Nancy, Shelly or Sarah was my next project.  Showering and
dressing followed.  My wardrobe for the day ended up being jeans and a
T-shirt with a pair of lizard skin boots.  Dressing for success didn't seem
necessary.

   Susan and the twins were in the kitchen.  My breakfast was ready and
coffee too.  After eating and plenty of coffee my study was my next
destination.  The Aeron chair beckoned me and then claimed me.  It was
comfortable and relaxing.  My virus relieved my anxiety.  It encouraged me
to make myself comfortable and wait.

   My skin tingled at exactly eight AM.  Unconsciousness nearly took me but
then relented.  When my eyes opened my study was gone, replaced by a
strangely comforting conference room.  It wasn't a conference room like any
I'd seen before but it was a conference room.  The chair that held me was
almost sinfully comfortable without being soft.  The others here were
obviously not human.  They did have one head on top and two arms, which had
hands of a sort on their ends.  The hands had four fingers but they were
all the same size.  There were two opposable thumbs for each hand.  One
thumb on one side of the fingers and another on the other side.

   The aliens appeared to be taller than me.  Their skin seemed to be
normal.  It was slightly paler and pinker than mine.  Their dress was some
type of robe arrangement that was beige in color.  They used audible speech
to communicate with me and their English seemed to fit perfectly with mine.

   "Welcome Jack.  I am Inglan, a population scientist." Inglan said.

   A meaningful reply escaped me.  Nodding my head in acknowledgement was
my response.

   "By now we know that you understand most of what has happened to your
planet and civilization.  We're sure that it was a surprise to you.  You
were also a very big surprise to us.  Perhaps one of the biggest surprises
we have ever encountered." Inglan said.

   My mind was still in a strictly defensive mode.  Fearing a wrong
response kept me from making any.

   "I can understand that you may be concerned about this visit.  We want
to assure you that no more terminations are being considered for you or
your planet.  We know that you must have many questions and we would like
to begin by answering them.  Please feel free to ask anything that comes to
you." Inglan said.

   "Who are you?"

   "What we call ourselves would not translate into your language.  The
Aliens, which you think of us as, is as good a name for us as anything.  We
are the dominant life form in this universe.  Our dominant position is a
direct result of our longevity.  We were the first life form to emerge
after what you refer to as the big bang." Inglan said.

   "Did you start life on earth?"

   "Yes.  We began experimenting with initiating life soon after we
developed faster than light travel." Inglan said.

   "Why did you kill so many of the people on earth?"

   "When we initiate life on a planet we have certain expectations of that
life.  The life on earth did not meet the requirements and was not
progressing toward meeting the requirements.  Usually when this is the case
we terminate all life on the planet and erase all traces of that life. 
Later we re-seed the planet and try again.

   "We departed from our normal procedure this time.  We were somewhat
satisfied with the life form that developed but we were not satisfied with
the civilization that you developed.  The civilization was directly
responsible for the stagnation of your progress toward scientific research.
Somehow large portions of your resources were being channeled into
developing newer and better soap while your research into ways to explore
space had to fight for survival.

   "Of course this is a simplistic stating of what was actually going on
but I think that it will give you and idea of what we were dissatisfied
with." Inglan said.

   "In other words most of earth's population was eliminated because we
didn't try to explore space."

   "That is partially true but not exactly true.  What we require of a life
form that we have started is research.  The research should eventually be
directed toward understanding and exploration of the universe.  We are not
interested in better soap.  Earth's main shortcoming was directing most of
its resources toward fiscal gain for some at the expense of others." Inglan
said.

   "Then what would you have us do?  What can we discover that you don't
already know?  Wouldn't it be better to tell us all you know and let us
work from there?"

   "In fact you have already discovered something that we didn't know.  We
should have known it but we neglected to learn it.  We knew the facts and
even the drone recognized your achievement almost at once.  Strictly
speaking you have discovered, since earth's purge, something that has
insured your survival and our experiment on earth has already paid its own
way so to speak." Inglan said.

   "What have I possibly discovered?"

   "You call it the trick." Inglan said.

   "But I didn't really discover it."

   "No you didn't.  It was discovered by Carlisle, who hid it away and
tried to use it for his own designs to become the ruler of all earth.  It
was also discovered almost at the same time by Jackie, who only used it in
a small way to make life easier for himself and Bill.  He also informed
Bill of the trick.  You, on the other hand, after learning about the trick
have used it to consolidate your hold on the re-emerging civilization.  You
have also discovered a way to use the trick to appropriate the virus that
we created and used it to commandeer our drone for your own use.  Your
grasp of the trick and of the use of our virus and our drone has frankly
astounded us.  You have made more progress with earth than we expected in
the next two hundred years.

   "We didn't even consider or look for the trick on earth.  Even though
the trick is possible because of something that we engineered into your
life form.  We certainly never considered the possibility that you would be
able to communicate with the virus that we introduced and never imagined
that you could use this communication to take over the drone.  We realize
now that we should have but that is exactly why we seed planets in the
first place.  We want the planets to examine the universe as they find it
without any preconceived notions that we might impart.  Our experiment on
earth proves that it is a viable way to proceed.

   "So you haven't come to eliminate the rest of us?"

   "No.  We came back to see what was happening here.  The drone didn't
report any of this to us.  We only knew something out of the ordinary was
happening when the drone began moving from the orbit we placed it in toward
an orbit around earth.  There is an alarm system on the drone that is
separate from any communication with the drone's AI.  It's main function is
to report unanticipated movement of the drone, which usually only occurs if
someone is trying to steal it.  That is unlikely but it has happened
before. When we received the alarm that is what we thought was happening
this time.  When we queried the drone and it reported that everything was
normal we were even more suspicious.  When we finally regained control of
the drone and discovered exactly what had happened we were delighted."
Inglan said.

   "So you are glad that we took over the drone?  I don't understand that."

   "We have millions of drones.  They are not scarce resources.  We fully
expected you to discover it and use it within two or three hundred years.
We were ecstatic that you found it and took it over in less than a year. 
The way you did it was even more of a delight to us.  We had great
difficulty regaining control of it.  We are glad that you hadn't accessed
the recorded knowledge that it contains that is greatly beyond your earth's
current technology since you have shown a propensity already to look at
things differently than we do.

   "Frankly, if Carlisle, Jackie or Bill had made a more intelligent use of
the trick earth would never have been subjected to the terminations.  We
are more than pleased with the outcome though.  The terminations and the
introduction of the virus have amplified and hastened earth's progress.  We
have decided that you are exactly what earth needed and we are delighted
that you are already moving in the direction that seems most promising to
us." Inglan said.

   "What direction is that?"

   "We see that you are intending to unite earth into one civilization with
yourself as king.  We also know that you are not interested in selfish or
foolish actions.  You have an ingrained fairness and almost all of your
actions have shown that you will not tolerate individuals gaining power
over others and forcing them into nonconsensual compliance.  You have made
yourself the leader and you control all you command but you do not use the
power you have for meaningless pursuits.  We look forward to the time that
you have the whole of earth under your command." Inglan said.

   "What do you expect of me then?"

   "We expect you to put earth back together under one ruler.  We expect
you to rebuild civilization and leave out petty maneuvering for money.  The
earth's current resources and technology can give everybody whatever they
want materially.  As you are doing this we would like for you to rebuild
education and then research.  We still want you to find your own way to out
of system exploration but it is not now mandatory." Inglan said.

   "What does that mean?"

   "It means that you have already paid earth's debt.  What you have
discovered and shown us is already worth the trouble we went to seeding
earth.  We hope that you will continue but it isn't required for your
survival.  We rate knowledge as the ultimate currency and you have provided
knowledge that we should have gained on our own but didn't.  You can't know
and we won't tell you how valuable this particular knowledge is to us.  It
has made you and earth worthwhile to us though.  Anything else discovered
by you and your population is above and beyond what we expected." Inglan
said.

   Confused but also delighted I requested a break to consider these
revelations.  It was granted and an Alien led me to a small room for rest
and reflection.  Saying that this morning's explanations were surprising
would be quite an understatement.

   Even though the Aliens had been forthcoming with their explanations my
understanding still wasn't greatly enhanced.  My relief that earth had paid
its debt was tremendous.  My knowledge of what the Aliens were and what
they wanted was still lacking.  Aimee was really the one who'd discovered
her virus and communicated with it.  She was also the one that had first
taken control of the drone.  Sarah and Shelly had taught me the trick and
Seven had let me know that it could be used on males also.  My contribution
seemed small to me.  It seemed that my main claim to fame was being in the
right place at the right time.  Now I was poised to take over the whole
earth and lead it into the future.  What were my qualifications?

   An Alien fetched me back to the conference room after about two hours.
Inglan was at the table again.  My same seat was my destination.

   "We know that you are probably overwhelmed Jack.  We know that your task
may seem daunting to you.  It will be easier than you think.  You have a
secure organization already.  You have already discovered that your
communication with the virus and the drone can insure that you have no
dissenters in your ranks.  Basically you need only consolidate your hold on
earth, rebuild the education system, procreate and educate.  While you need
not use the virus to make automatons of your population you can use it to
eliminate dissension.  It will allow you to have a civilization without
crime and without want.  You haven't forced anyone to work that didn't want
to yet almost all that have come to you have volunteered to work.

   "We have let you see the transport technology by using it on you.  The
drone is fully enabled to transport and we will not keep the technology
from you.  It was within earth's grasp before the terminations.  We will
expedite the drone's move to an orbit around earth before we leave.  We
will be blocking your access to technologies, which are far ahead of what
earth had discovered.  Every other part of the drone will be available to
you.  We will be leaving two more drones in this system but they are only
for your protection from the few scattered renegade individuals that we
don't control.  If any of them are encountered the drones will subdue them
and they will be handled at your discretion.

   "The virus will not be transmitted to your newborn and we will not be
giving you access to its technology.  This doesn't mean that you are not to
try and discover its secrets.  It only means that you must do the work.  We
feel that with your current situation and with control of the drone and the
transport technology you will be able to consolidate your rule of earth and
begin creating the new civilization.  We will finish moving the drone and
then observe for a while.  We don't anticipate contacting you again in the
near future but we don't rule it out." Inglan said.

   "That's it?  I should just take over earth and get it back into shape?"

   "That is what we recommend.  We will also recommend that you forego the
market driven model for your people and concentrate on making material
goods available to all.  We don't think we even need to mention that you
should make sure everyone has enough to eat.  We encourage you to make full
use of all resources, including your population." Inglan said.

   The tingling started again and when my consciousness came back to me
fully my study came back into view.  My virus reported to me that all was
well but that many were concerned about my whereabouts.  It was past
lunchtime so a trip to the kitchen was in order.
