Life Sentence -- Uther Pendragon

Life's a bitch. Then you die.

But sometimes some good stuff happens after the thread is spun, and
before the sister gets at it with her sharp shears. And sometimes
bad stuff happens. But together, it is what we call life and we all
share in it.

Uther's captured this in a powerful and subtle exposition. I can't
even tell you how many levels this piece works on, because I lost
track. And that's a wonderful thing, all in itself.

There's nothing much more to say, except you'll be missing out
bigtime, if you ignore this gem.

Interview with God -- virgosun

The things we'll go through to impress the interviewer. We don
uncomfortable clothes. We answer inane questions and squirm, but
after many long months on the dole, perhaps it would be worthwhile
to put our best face forward. And so, our narrator sits and smiles.
Can we blame a girl's mind for wandering when such archaic people
are pestering her?

The Artist -- Chiaroscuro  
    (MF)

The model sits languidly in the chair, unconcerned about how her
skirt falls upon her body. She has a history with the painter, her
last pose in a black velvet dress when she politely refused to pose
without. They are closer now and she wants to be painted. Without.

This piece is basically stroke fiction, but Chiaroscuro has managed
to interleave a real story with real characters and real emotions
into the sexual tension. It's a rare skill to be able to do that.

The imagery of this piece is exceptional. It's like reading a
painting in many ways. Enjoy.

The Private Beach -- Katzmarek
    (MF,Teen, Rom,slow)

Nineteen year old Ronnie takes a week off. He hops in his watercraft
and heads for his favourite camping spot -- a secluded beach that at
this time of year should only be accessible by sea. When he arrives,
he is startled to find trailers and bodyguards occupying his chosen
venue. But he stands his ground against the American invaders and
shares the beach with them. Turns out that the enigmatic Sheree
occupies the trailers and Ronnie learns a few things about fame and
fortune.

The strength here is the easy flowing nature of the story. If you
are expecting a quick tumble into the sack by two horny teens, you
might want to look elsewhere. Instead, Katzmarek spins us a deeper
tale of adolescence -- two teens, both uncertain, at complete
opposite ends of the social spectrum, who click. Like the Princess
who marries the Pauper.

Needless to say, I thorough enjoyed this trip to the beach, and I
suspect most readers will, too.

Cindy -- artie 
    (MF, angst)

One morning, Cindy calls Bob to request that he help her with her
computer. You see, Doug, Cindy's boyfriend, used to do all the
computer repairs, but since he walked out on her it hasn't worked
quite right. Cindy seems upset, in general -- Doug has found someone
new. This all seems rather strange to Bob, considering that Cindy
had walked out on him not so long ago because she'd found someone
new. Reluctantly, Bob agrees to help his former girlfriend, and old
emotions gets mixed around when it becomes clear that Cindy isn't
only looking to get her iMac fixed.

Given the thrust of the story, I thought that the depth of the
detail of the computer repair didn't quite fit. I'm not sure it was
necessary for realism, and I suspect most readers won't care which
AirPort base station Bob had to reset. However, that's just a
suggestion for artie about story focus.

The overall story is very well written. I really enjoyed the glimpse
into a more realistic relationship with characters that actually
feel something beyond a tingle in the groin. Artie tackles a tough
subject here. Even if she's hot, and she needs comfort, is it right
to resurrect a broken relationship? I suppose you'll have to read
the story to see.

Shopping -- Robin Curious

Robin sits lonely in a hotel bar, watching the attractive people
wander in and out. Finally, she sighs and carries herself up to her
room. There, she realises that she needs something different. She
cleans herself up, dons a trenchcoat and a smile, and makes her way
to the mall. There, she toys with the staff, but discovers something
that perhaps she hadn't considered before.

I liked this story. The first person perspective worked very well
here. Robin, the author, not the flasher, stays on track and gives
us a glimpse into why one might want to wander into a strange store
and flash the cute guy behind the cash register. It had an honest
feel to it.

I liked where the story ended up, with exactly the right mix of
subtle Eros mixed in with a story of discovery.

Sonoma Threesome -- Myers
    (MFF, oral)

Ally's husband is called away on business. Unfortunately, this was
the weekend that Ally had planned on getting away to the Sonoma wine
country with her friends, our narrator and Leanne. Ally decides to
go anyway. Our absentminded narrator has forgotten his swimming
trunks, but why should that stop him from enjoying the hot tub?
After a while, the women join him, and after discovering his
predicament, they decide that lounging sans suits would be more
comfortable for all. Of course, they've been sampling the wine, too.
When the conversation swings around to oral sex, our narrator is a
little uncomfortable, but as the night progresses, and all three
find themselves in bed together, life becomes more wild than any of
them ever imagined.

Myers takes a different approach here to a classic threesome story.
He adds some character, some realistic plot, and some humanity to
the mix. Instead of wild abandon where everyone thinks that the
threesome is the best idea since the double-headed dildo, we see
that these decisions aren't always made lightly. This makes the
ultimate resolution of the story far more believable and
understandable for us readers. I for one appreciate the injection of
humanity, and I suspect most readers will as well.

The hot sex doesn't hurt either.

My Favorite Bitch -- Joe

When Roy finds a rather explicit tape of Meg with her boyfriend,
Joe, he is shocked, a little jealous, and seething to confront Meg.
After all, Meg has repeatedly told Roy about how Joe mistreats her
- -- slapping her, forcing her, and pushing her to wait on him hand
and foot. In short, Joe's an asshole. But, at least according to
Meg, he's a real man, and he's a great fuck, and while she wishes
he'd be nicer to her, she loves him. So, when Roy confronts Meg
about the tape, the encounter doesn't quite go as he planned. But
when Meg finally crosses the line and kicks him out of his own
apartment, Roy begins to discover a truth that perhaps he should
have seen long ago.

At first, I'll admit, I was a little concerned about where this
story was going. The sexual overtones and the plot seemed mighty
familiar -- and I usually don't like where that ends up. Cliched sex
with a lot of Dominance/Submission postulation without any regard
for explanation. In other words: shallow, shallow, shallow.

But I've read some of Joe's (the author, not the asshole) work
before in CR #035, and I was pleasantly surprised at his unique
approach to this kind of character and story. So I forged on,
despite my misgivings.

I will not ruin the story for you, but suffice it to say, this is
not typical erotica. Joe is playing with us, and does a remarkably
good job of character, sex, and most of all plot.

Again, a gem easily missed. Go read it, even if you don't normally
enjoy this type of story. I'm glad I did.
