Hammon Wry's Words of the Day for Friday January 17, 2003

Note: Due to copyright laws, I am hesitant to include the definitions
and pronunciations of the words of the day. I have provided the
websites for each so that you can look up the words for yourself.

This is an exercise in writing discipline. I am trying to get into
the habit of writing something every day. I figure if I use the words
of the day from two sources in a sexual context, I will have
inspiration and motivation.

And now, on to Hammon Wry's Words of the Day!

Dictionary.com's word of the day: fop

M-W.com's word of the day: sitzmark

"...'You left a sitzmark on my sofa.'
'A what?'
'A sitzmark. It's skiing term, usually. In that context, it means a
depression or hollow left in the snow by sitting down. I really
couldn't think of a polite way to say that you left a wet mark.'
'I--I...' she stammered, stunned at the pronouncement.

She turned back to look at her place on the leather sofa. There was
the mark he had spoken of, a darker stain against the sepia surface.
She stared at it, blushing at the implications of it, mute testimony
to her blatant arousal. She couldn't pull her eyes away from it, and
so she stood mesmerized and paralized by its watery witness.

Her host chuckled. 'The least you could do is offer to clean it off.
But since you seem so taken aback, I'll do the honor.' With a
gesture reminiscent of the dandiest fop, he pulled a snowy linen
handkerchief from his breast pocket, and wiped the stain away.

Her eyes followed the motion of the hand with the cloth, and was
therefore even more embarrassed as he raised it to his face and
inhaled deeply. 'Ah, two of my favorite scents. Leather and aroused
woman. A delightful combination!' With that he folded the
handkerchief and replaced it in his pocket. He stood up, his own
arousal evident as he looked at her with an unreadable expression.
'You do realize that you will have to be punished for marking it,
don't you?'

Another rush of wetness flowed as she nodded, too mute with desire and
fear to trust her voice."

Wow. That was a tough one. Try as I might, I could not come up with
a context for sitzmark based on its use in the skiing context. I have
no experience with that sport, and so was at an utter loss. Fop was
easy, but sitzmark had me stumped.

So, I decided to take it out of context. Some would argue that this
is not a valid use of the English language. To which I respectfully
offer a wet raspberry. It is precisely by such "incorrect" use that
words enter a wider stream of use, and take on other meanings.
Language is a living thing, with words as cells. All things change or
die, and thereby change. So here's a challenge to my readers: Take a
word that is specific to your work, and use it in a different context,
and help change our mother tongue a bit!

Gods, I love my work.
Hammon Wry
