ANGELA'S NOTEBOOK
February 6, 1993
Character Study:

Henry Whitman now at 50, so handsome, recognized the flaw of beauty and
refused to delude himself: he grew older with every black sunrise and every
shadow beneath and inside his eyes. Henry showed up on that horizon of the
taxi stand, early, before 6 am, to stretch the curve of the terminator as
it appeared.

"It is not where I stand that is important," he might have said. "Out there
is. Look at the moon, standing there on its surface the line of light at
dawn is without any boundary.

"On one side it is hot and the other dead at nearly absolute zero. That is
barely reasonable when compared to the grit and grate of the actual land
where I have chosen to plant my feet to stretch more than my mind."

Yes, Henry loved to promote the show of words. He loved to strike an
immoral balance and did it even with the rocks, stones, gravel and dirty
water of the Hudson out there. He could have said all of this if I let him.

I control it. I am imagining not what was or can become, but rather what is
perfect for my notebook sketch of Henry. It is valuable, for now as Laurie
lie dying, he will change and the perceptions he marks down in any script,
even by my distorted sketch, becomes the rapture of that unpredictable
change. It will never be the same. We, Henry, Laurie, Aaron and I were a
perfect geometric form that had no name. Not square, circle, oblate sphere
or undefined mass.

Laurie's kidnap, captivity and drove him friend to his loss, combined with
an absolute grief that will not be erased even if by some miracle Laurie
lives.

We all die you know, but how that torments us. And why that is the only
question I never want to know too soon. In another culture when they
execute criminals (something in itself despicable), they do not warn them
when they will die. It happens at random at any time after they are ordered
dead.

The "axe man" just does it. They dissolve without knowing when. They are
robbed of that perception for crimes against the state as well as for
murder.

Henry changed by the loss of Laurie saw death as a river eroding his own
spirit. Yes, I know I am projecting. What if all of us are immortal, and
death is just punctuation. Yes Henry had a sense of humor.

Will he keep it? Will the loss of "his perfect beauty," as he called
Laurie, change the "I don't give a fuck rogue" into a man who accepts the
fakery of another personality fitted by grief.

Laurie took pride in Henry's image of her vulnerable beauty.

I know why he said it, and I know Laurie believed it and him.

She was perfect.
