This narrative has to have a some explanation. This whole piece
takes place during the late 1950's in a country area in central
north Florida. People were pretty naïve back then. There wasn't
Penthouse or Playboy yet to learn words. There were no books at
the library instructing kids. No book stores to sell some porno.
No dirty movies available to kids. School sure never mentioned
sex. Our parents kind of told us and we saw how animals
procreated, but we didn't know much about mutual gratification of
the opposite sex. So some of the words I use may seem quaint.
They are but that's how we talked then. No one ever said "fuck."
Shit, was a really bad word. So if you get the picture, it will
be easier to understand. Now, even though it has been a long,
long time ago, I remember the conversations nearly word for word.
At least the ones that were so shocking and important at the
time. I tried not to embellish what happened as what did happen
is story enough. I remember and relish the sights, sounds,
smells, the touches and all those special feelings as if they
just happened.

Just the term "cream pie" makes you visualize a coconut or banana
cream pie. You had to eat it fresh or it would get runny. Liked
them as a kid, still do. Try to never let them get runny. Let
me tell you about how I first learned not to let a different kind
of cream pie get runny.

Discovery - Chapter four (mf teen caught, humor)

Now it gets complicated. Shirley talked to her mom the next day.
They even drove into town so they could talk about it. They
talked for four plus hours. My first knowledge of all this was a
telephone call Sunday evening from Shirley saying. "Why don't you
come over for desert, mom has some apple pie?" Not knowing what
I was in far, I was there in a flash. When I went into the
house, I knew something was wrong. No kids. No dad. Then I
remembered passing their car on the way. Shirley's mom said,
"Sit down (at the kitchen table) and have some pie". Shirley was
not there yet so I sat awaiting her. Her mom brought us both
coffee and sat with me, mostly just looking at me. She didn't
look mad, worried a little, but seemed to be OK.

Me: "Where are Fred and the kids?" Mom: "I told them to go
into town for ice cream." Me: "Shirley go with them?" Mom:
"No, she's here but I want to talk to you without her first."
Me: "Oh." Mom: "So, you two have been up to stuff lately?"
Me: "Ahmm." Mom: "No need to say anything, Shirley and I had a
long talk. You guys have been doing this a long time?" Me:
"Not very." Mom: "Well long enough. And now she thinks she's
pregnant and wants us to make arrangements for her wedding as
quick as possible." Me: "Huh?" Mom: "Shirley thinks what
happened last night made her pregnant and she should get married
quickly so people won't talk. They will still talk with both of
you still having a year left in school. You may have to quit
school to work and provide for her." Me: "Yes'm" Mom: "So
you want to marry Shirley?" Me: "Yes, I told her that before."
Mom: "Yes, she told me you said that before you two did
anything." Me: Big sigh and a sip of coffee. Mom: "I told
Shirley that she might wait a week before we go on about a
wedding." Me: "Mame?" Mom: "Ah, she is very close to start
her monthly cycle." Me: "Cycle?" Mom: "You know, her period.
In all likely hood she is not pregnant." Me: "Whew, good."
Mom: "You're not off the hook. She still wants to get married,
right now." Me: "She does?" Mom: "Shirley says she likes what
you guys did last night and wants to be able to do it as much as
possible." Me: (with a very red face) Mom: "So, what do you
think, gonna marry her?" Me: "If that is what we need to do
then we will." Mom: "Well let's talk to Shirley some more then
we'll see if we need to go see your folks. What do they think of
you and Shirley?" Me: "I've told them that Shirley and I had
talked about getting married one day. They know we are special
to each other since we were little kids." Her mom with a
satisfied look, got up, went to the stairs and called Shirley.
She came back in gave she and I more coffee and put a cup out for
Shirley.

Most country folks have a big kitchen table. Most can seat 10
easy. Shirley's mom was setting at one end and I was setting at
one side next to her. My assumption was Shirley would sit on the
other side of the table from me so I stood behind that chair to
hold the chair for her. (Old custom, used to be the thing to
do.) instead Shirley came in and sat in the chair next to where
I had been sitting. So now I was between her and her mom.

Her mom started, each time she spoke, she always looked directly
at you, either Shirley or me, "So you two really want to get
married right away?" Me: mute Shirley to be refereed to as Her:
"Yes, we want to get married as soon as possible, before anyone
knows I'm pregnant." Mom: "Shirley, you are probably not
pregnant." Her: "I still want to get married right away." Mom:
"Why?" Her: (A little red faced) "I told you all about it
mom, I just want to get married now." Mom: "So, this stuff
you've been doing is so special that you want to married right
away?" Her: "I told you before. (blushing even more) I liked
what we did. I don't want to quit doing what we did. I'm going
to keep doing it and doing it and I'll have to be married for
that." Me: (Equally bright red.) Mom: "There is a way that
this can work out with out getting married." Her: "How?" Mom:
"First we wait a week to see if you really are pregnant." Her:
"And then? I will just do it again and pretty soon I will be
pregnant." Mom: "This part is harder but it does work. You two
can do what you do for a good two weeks every month. But for two
weeks you have to be careful. That gives you two fun weeks and
two weeks you need to watch out." Her: "How do you know it will
work." Mom: "You only have four brothers and sisters and I'm
not pregnant right now. You know I'm still young enough to have
more kids." Her: "But I still want to get married." Mom:
"Don't you want to finish school?" Her: "Yes, but I can finish
school married." Mom: "So, you go to school while Chuck here
quits school gets a job and supports you." Her: "I didn't mean
it that way." Mom: "Then you want to get married, you both live
at home until you finish school? That's going to be some kind of
funny marriage." Her: "Oh mom, I don't know how to do all this
but I want to get married, I feel we should get married as soon
as possible. I don't know how to do this but we will figure
something out. Mom, please understand that we have a very
special love and need to be married so we can be together." Mom:
"Chuck, let's go talk to your folks. Call them, see if they can
talk a while."

I called them on the phone. With as little information as
possible so busy bodies wouldn't gossip, I asked dad if mom and
him would be able to stay up a while as Shirley and her mom
wanted to come over to talk about some stuff. He said to come
on, the other kids were on their way to bed. When I got off the
phone, Shirley's mom said that Shirley and I should go on and she
would go with Fred who was just then driving up. Oh man, this
was way over my head. I knew I loved Shirley. I even knew I
wanted to get married. But I didn't know how we were going to do
all this, stay in school, be married, live together, etc. I did
know that Shirley was even tougher and more bull headed than her
mom. I also knew that I had to get to my house to prep my mom
and dad before Shirley's mom got there. Then I thought of
another problem, did her dad know?

On the way to my house I asked, "Does your dad know too?"
Shirley who was being dangerously quiet said, "Mom told him but
said he had already asked her if she didn't think you and I were
up to stuff."

We got to my house, the yard light blazing, like lighting a
stadium. We went in to find my mom scurrying around getting
coffee cups on the table with a huge dish of cookies. My dad
ambled in and took his seat at the end of the table away from the
stove. It's always the mom's seat at the end of the table
nearest the stove. My dad was a tall 6'2" lanky quiet type of
guy till you got him going. He usually had a sly smile on his
face like he was amused at everything he came in contact with.
My mom was average height 5'3" not plump but not skinny. Mom was
always busy like she had too much nervous energy, always
scurrying around doing something. The only time she stopped was
in the evening when she and my dad would sit in the swing on the
porch. She always looked so relaxed and peaceful sitting with
him, his long arm wrapped around her. Shirley and sat down and
dad asked, "What's this all about?"

I looked back and forth between mom and dad then started, "Mom
and dad, Shirley and I think, ah, want to get married. We know
we are young. We know we have school to finish, but we want to
married." Dad just looked at us, "Hmmm." My mom however, sat
down took Shirley's hand and looked at me, "Chuckie, have you
been pushing Shirley into doing something you shouldn't?" Before
I could say anything, Shirley put her other hand on top of mom's
hand (three hands together) and said, "Chuck didn't start
anything, I did. It was my idea in the beginning so don't blame
him. Chuck was always a gentlemen with me. We did what we did,
I'm not ashamed. We're gonna keep doing what we are doing so we
should get married as soon as possible." My mom had a shocked
looked on her face, almost in tears. I thought my dad was going
to burst out laughing. Mom was now clutching Shirley's two hands
with both of hers, any second energy mom was going to explode.
Dad quietly said, "Chuck?" "Well, um, like I said dad, Shirley
and I want to get married."

At that moment there was a tap on the screen door. Dad got up
saying come on in Fred, come in Mim (Shirley's mom short for
Marsha, don't know how they got Mim out of it). This set off
energy mom, she was bustling around as if she could pick up
everyone, stuff 'em in a chair and bring something instantly.
Well, she did do everything almost instantly and was again seated
clutching Shirley's hand and Shirley's mom's hand (probably to
keep from springing into the ceiling). Fred was kind of like my
dad only shorter and thicker. He too had a sort of a smile on
his face like he just got away with something. This had to be
where Shirley got her mischievous grin.

Dad started: "Whadda ya think about this Fred?" Fred: "Don't
know much, Mim's been filling me in but haven't heard anything
direct yet." Dad: "May be Shirley should give her little speech
again, it was really something." Fred: "Speech?" Shirley:
"Dad, I said that what has happened, I started, not Chuck, and
that we feel since we want to be together we should get married."
Dad: "Yeah, that's what you said, but this time it little more
gently. I thought Kat (mom, short for Katherine) was come apart
when Shirley gave talk." Mom: "Oh Lee, stop, she just said what
was on her mind and said it with emotion. She's just like her
mom, just says what needs to be said directly," Dad: "She
didn't beat around the bush. That's for sure." Fred: "Chuck,
how do you plan on supporting Shirley while she goes to school?"
Me: "I don't know yet sir." Fred: "Don't you think you figure
this out before you get married?" Mim: "Don't jump on Chuck,
Shirley's the one pushing to get married instantly." Dad: "Just
so Fred and I are not in the dark about all this may be someone
can explain this whole thing." Mim: "Shirley, let me tell this,
I think I can do this with a straight face and get your point
across." She looked up to Fred and Dad still holding onto mom's
hand, "Shirley and Chuck have discovered the are in love. They
have also discovered how much they enjoy being in love." She
said this with a half smile. You know when your trying to keep a
straight face and one side of your mouth goes up while the other
curls down. Fred had a serious look on his face while dad looked
really amused. Mim continued, "Shirley says that since she knows
about how much fun it is to be in love she does not wish to stop
being in love and wants to be with Chuck all the time. She
thinks she get married as she thinks that would be more
appropriate. Is that about right hon?" Looking a Shirley.
Shirley: "Yes, but more important I'm or at least I think I'm
pregnant and I want to get married so when we have the baby it
will be to long married parents." Fred's jaw bounced off the
table. Dad smiled bigger. Mim: "You are probably not pregnant,
so that part does not make any difference right now." Shirley:
"I want to get married anyway. Chuck and I learned how to make
each other feel really good. I liked what we did a lot. I'm
going to keep on doing what we did. So I need to get married so
it is ok." Fred drooled on the table. My mom was clutching
hands and squirming just before the rocket blast. Mim and my dad
were almost laughing. I couldn't help but smile. Mim said:
"Don't you mean you and Chuck like this and are going to keep on,
not just you." Shirley: "Oh mom, you know what I mean. I just
want everyone to know how much I love Chuck and that we are
married. My dad said with a chuckle, "Well Chuck guess we gotta
figure a way for you to make a living and go to school too.
Whadda ya say Fred, wanna help 'em out or do you want your
grandkid to be homeless." Fred: "Hope there ain't no grandkid
yet. Damn, Shirley, you really are determined about this aren't
you." Mim: "Watch you mouth, you know the way we were, you
don't want the same for her do you. At least she knows what she
wants and says what she wants. Shirley: "Not just what I want
mom, dad, I say what I'm going to do."

This went on for another hour until Dad and Fred both said it was
getting late and we all best get to bed. Shirley and I squeezed
hands as she left with her mom and dad. I helped mom put stuff
away and into the sink. When dad came back from seeing Fred,
Mim, and Shirley off, he said, "Chuck, you and I will work
something out. You're really young to get married and all but
people used to it all the time, guess you could get it done."
Mom then added, "When kids used to get married they often stayed
with one of their folks until their folks helped them build their
own home. Lee? Why can't we do that." My dad said with a
smile, "Guess we could. If Fred can get over what's happening to
his oldest daughter, we can get over what's happening with oldest
son." We went to bed. I didn't sleep all that well and welcomed
the morning chores as the start of a new day.

On the bus that morning Shirley didn't look like she got that
much sleep the night before either. Some of our neighbor friends
all wanted to know what Shirley did with the rest of her birthday
night. Teasing a little about probably heading toward the river
and/or parking. Shirley just told me quietly that her and her
mom and talked most of the night and that we would all talk more
tonight.

When I got home after school and finished the evening chores mom
told me to get cleaned up as we going to have all of Shirley's
family over for supper. Dad was already getting cleaned up so I
hustled up thinking how I was going to my homework done and all
this too. All fourteen of ate at the big table, squeezing the
little ones in. Mom had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy,
green beans, biscuits and a strawberry pie from canned
strawberries. (We put up a ton of strawberries in season so we
had them all year long.) When we were finished mom said for the
little ones to do whatever homework they had. She told Shirley
and I to go do what we wanted, but be back in an hour or so.
Shirley and I both had homework so we went to my room that I
shared with a brother and started. In a small town back then,
everyone took the same classes so we all had the same homework.
We finished up about the time we were to be back. When we got
back dad spoke first.

"You guys didn't go anywhere?" he asked. Me: "No sir, we had to
do our homework." Mim: "See, I told you they were responsible.
They can't even take a hint about having some time alone." Me:
"What are you all talking about?" Shirley: "They thought the
only thing we would do is go out to the barn and fool around."
Me: "Let's go, we shouldn't disappoint them." Fred: "Hold on
Chuck, your dad was just proving his point. Your dad and Mim
think you guys are ready for this and can handle it. I'm still
not sure. But, when Mim and you, Shirley, when you two make up
your minds, there is nothing to do but go along. Chuck, your dad
wants us to build you a house on the hill above the creek. In
that small field we can never get too." Shirley: "I know the
place, oh Chuck it would be wonderful. Perfect for us." Dad:
"Chuck, you would have to start clearing and grading a road to
get there. Think you can find enough creek gravel to make a lane
road up there?" Me: "Yes sir I probably can. But dad, even if
we have a house, we have to eat, buy clothes, pay electric, may
be a phone, feed bills for any stock we may have. How can we do
that." Dad: "You two will still have to do chores and stuff at
our places. That should earn you enough to get by till you're
out of school or on your own. Chuck, you still haven't made up
your mind whether you're going to farm or go in town to get job,
so why not just do this till it's the right time, OK?" Mom:
"You both will have plenty of time to make up your minds and
since you both will be busy with school and chores, I can fix you
guys dinner to eat at home or eat here." Shirley: "You mean you
guys are going to let us get married?" Mim: "Yes honey, you can
get married."

With that Shirley jumped into my arms. All 4'10" 85# of
dynamite hugging my neck, kissing my face, flailing her legs till
they wrapped around me. I was red faced but happy. My Dad stood
next to the under five foot Mim, both laughing, Fred even smiled,
while my mom had tears in her eyes while trying to fill up coffee
cups.

When Shirley calmed down a little and my dad and her mom quit
laughing, Shirley stood and asked, "What can Chuck and I do
before we get a house built. We want, I mean have to , I mean we
will be together before then. I'm not waiting till you guys
build a house before I can be his wife. Chuck needs to be my
husband now, not months from now." This just started my dad and
Mim laughing again, even Fred chuckled and rolled his eyes. Mom,
always practical said, "Chuck, you can fix up the upstairs if you
want, all you would have to do is clean it out. With both
windows open it should be cool enough." Mim said, "Shirley has
her own room, if you want you can stay there if you don't too
noisy." Fred: "If she's like you, Chuck will need a gag."
With that Mim got a little red faced, my dad burst out laughing
and even mom stopped fidgeting to giggle.
