(continued from part one)

That night the local news reported that vandals had damaged
several paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago and that, so far,
police had no suspects. So went the official patter. The truth would
never come out. Sooner or later the hoopla would die down and
what happened at the museum would be forgotten

I was sitting on the sofa in a Bears T-shirt and gray sweatpants,
thinking about Jessie again. Well, still. I liked her a lot. She was
tough, smart, and drop-dead gorgeous. That made her just about
perfect. Jessie said at lunch she couldn't stop thinking about me.
The feeling was mutual. I wanted to see her again . . . needed to see
her again. Soon. Jessie was the kind of woman I could fall head
over heels in love with. She was definitely the kind of woman I
could fall heels over shoulder in lust with. God help me, the woman
pushed all the right buttons . . . including some I didn't know I had!

The doorbell put the kibosh to my torrid musings. I felt a tickle of
apprehension race down my back. It was late. I wasn't expecting
anyone. There was a goblin in Chicago. Where was my gun?

I rolled off the sofa and went to the door, squinting through the
peephole. It was Jessie! My palms got clammy. Oh God. She was
here! And I was in T-shirt and sweats! Damn! But there was no
time to change. I opened the door. Jessie looked ever more
beautiful than she had that afternoon. How the hell was that
possible? She smiled at me and I swear to God my heart stopped
beating, if only for a moment. I felt lightheaded and had to lean
against the door jamb for support. I might have been safer with the
goblin.

"Jessie," I said. My voice was strained. The leather jacket really
worked for her. It was sure doing a number on my nerves.

"I should have called, I know," Jessie said.

"No. That's all right. Come on in." I moved to one side so she could
get by me then closed the door. She had on tight jeans and when I
turned I got a nice view of her butt. Oh, was I ever in trouble.

"This is cute," Jessie said. She was looking out over the apartment.

"Thanks," I said. She turned to look at me. When our eyes met I
thought I would melt into a little puddle of goo. The room seemed
to get warmer with each passing second. And it wasn't just me. I
could see the nervous tension on her face.

Jessie said, "Since lunch got cut short, I thought we could have
dessert." She held up a white paper bag. "Cheesecake from Eli's."

I licked my lips. "Oh, yum. Have a seat, get comfortable. I'll get
some plates."

"Great," Jessie said, handing over the bag.

I took it. "Be right back."

"I'll be here," Jessie said, shrugging out of her leather jacket.

I retreated to the kitchen to hyperventilate in private. Jesus H! I
was five seconds away from coming completely unhinged. How
could anyone have that kind of effect on me? But Jessie did. She
had me weak-kneed and starry-eyed. I took a deep breath and told
myself to relax. So the woman of my dreams was in the other room.
I could handle that. Right? Sure. No problem. I got out forks and
plates then opened the bag from Eli's. Jessie had great taste. I
served up the cheesecake, took another deep breath, and went back
into the living room.

Jessie was curled up on the sofa, legs tucked underneath her. She
smiled as I came in. "Need some help?"

"Nope. I've got it," I said. She still had on the blue pullover sweater
from lunch. It showed of her curves quite nicely, in my opinion. I
sat down next to her and handed her a plate. Our eyes met again.

"Thanks," Jessie said.

I tried the cheesecake. It was so delicious it bordered on sinful.
Both of us purred with pleasure then laughed about it with our
mouths full. "I'm beginning to agree with your theory about sex and
food."

Jessie laughed and took another bite. I watched her lips close
around the fork. It was like she was making love to it. She closed
her eyes with a soft, satisfied moan then looked over at me. Did she
want to know if I was watching? Was she doing that just for me or
did she always attack her dessert like that? I didn't care.

"So what exciting things did you do today" Jessie asked.

I said, "There was a small ruckus at the Art Institute."

Jessie had another forkful of cheesecake. "I heard about that. More
senseless destruction. And that's the call you got at lunch?"

"Yeah," I said. We ate a little more. "What about your day?"

"Not as exciting as yours," Jessie said. She looked up at me.
"Though I did have lunch with the most amazing woman."

Slicing off a hunk of cheesecake with my fork, I said, "I thought
about you all day."

"Mmmm," Jessie purred. "And just what were you thinking,
Detective Benson?"

I blushed. This time I did nothing to hide it. We finished our
cheesecake and set the plates on the coffee table. Then Jessie leaned
back on the sofa and stared at me. God. She was so beautiful. And
her eyes were filled with such longing it made me ache.

"Can I tell you something?" I asked.

"Of course."

I said, "Today, in the parking lot . . . I really wanted to kiss you."

"Why didn't you?"

"I was afraid to start something I couldn't finish," I said.

Jessie reached over and ran her fingers through my hair. "No
danger of that now. I have all night."

I leaned over and brushed her lips with mine. The kiss overwhelmed
me. It started out slow at first, not tentative, just slow, soft and
sweet and delicate. Then it deepened into something that left me . .
. left both of us . . . breathing hard. I thought I would pass out. But
I didn't. I pulled Jessie's mouth to mine and kissed her again,
picking up right where we left off, each of us going back for more.
She slid her hand up my thigh. I moaned. God! How I wanted
Jessie to touch me! Almost as much as I wanted to touch her. I
groped her breast. She stroked my thigh. I worked a hand up her
sweater. She slipped her hand down the front of my sweats. Our
kisses became more and more urgent.

"Let's . . . go . . . bedroom," I panted.

Jessie murmured against my lips, "Yes."

I took Jessie by the hand and led her into the bedroom. The simple
and even perfunctory act of getting undressed turned into a ballet
with her. I pulled off her sweater. She got my pants off. The kisses
never stopped. Our hands were frantic on each other. I took off her
bra. She lifted off my T-shirt and discovered I wasn't wearing a bra.
Her hands felt so good on me. She felt even better under my
fingertips. Her skin was soft and warm. Mine was on fire.

The gropes and kisses got us into bed. I pushed Jessie flat and
snuggled up next to her. She was more beautiful than I ever
imagined. Seeing her naked flesh made me whimper. I ran my hands
over her taut body, delighting in the look of desire that flickered
over her. She wanted me. This gorgeous creature wanted me.

I bent to kiss her once more. Jessie melted under me, hands tangled
in my hair. I cupped her breast and squeezed it, stroking her firm
nipple with the pad of my thumb. She moaned into the kiss. Her
soft cries begged for more. I inched lower to suckle at her bosom,
taking her now rock-hard nipple into my mouth, teasing it with my
tongue. Jessie liked that. Her fingers twined in my hair as I kissed
her breasts, one then the other, making sure neither was denied
attention.

"Yes . . . Kate . . . yes."

The whine in her voice warmed me all over. I slipped a hand
between her legs and was rewarded with a deep, impatient moan.
Jessie had a thick, wild bush of hair that was now matted with her
desire. I teased her slit with the tip of my finger, making her purr
for more. God! She was so wet! I had no trouble at all sliding two
fingers into her pussy. Jessie groaned. With a mouthful of her tit I
pumped my fingers in and out of her, her sticky warm juices
pouring down my hand. Jessie thrashed on the bed, muttering
breathlessly, her fingers in my hair urging me lower . . . begging me
. . . pleading with me. I wasn't about to disappoint her.

Nipping at her breast one more time, I moved down her flat tummy
with kisses until I had my face right in her cunt. I was practically
hanging off the edge of the bed. But I didn't care. The sight of her
spread pussy in front of me made me whimper like a dog under the
table at Thanksgiving. I buried my face in her wetness. She was
absolutely delicious. Unbelievable! Jessie groaned and arched off
the bed, fidgeting anxiously as I lapped at the folds of her pussy. I
was desperate for her. It would have been impossible to get enough
of her. I gobbled her up, a starved, ravenous beast, licking and
sucking her delectable cunt until she was screaming in climax. And
not even that stopped me! Jessie actually had to lift my head from
between her legs. She dragged me by the hair into a fierce,
passionate kiss. Her tongue found mine. I sucked on it. Jessie
moaned again.

Jessie rolled us both over, the weight of her body pinning me to the
bed. I surrendered. She could do whatever she wanted to me. And
she did. My body became a plaything to her, my breasts . . . my
pussy . . . my ass . . . they were all hers, to do with as she pleased.
Her hands and lips spared no part of me. She fucked me with her
fingers, with her tongue. No stone went unturned. And all I could
was sob with pleasure as the woman of my dreams explored every
last inch of me until I cried out in sweet release.

I woke up the next morning a little before eight. Jessie was still
sleeping next to me. Huzzah! It wasn't a dream! That made me the
luckiest woman on the planet. Was it gauche to do I-got-laid
cartwheels through the house? Probably.

Dropping a kiss on her shoulder, I slipped out of bed, grabbed a
robe, and headed into the kitchen with a yawn. Jessie kept me up
most of the night. But I wasn't complaining. She was a wildcat in
bed, insatiable but generous, giving back as much as she demanded.
I hurt all over. But I couldn't remember ever feeling so content.

I got the coffee maker going then sliced a bagel. Last night left me
ravenous with hunger. So much for her theory about food being a
substitute for sex!

The doorbell rang. I didn't think that could be good at eight in the
morning. And it wasn't. O'Malley was standing on my front porch.
Shit. Just what I needed. I had a naked woman in my bed and
O'Malley was at my door. He couldn't have called me on route?
Now what!

"Let me guess," I said, letting him in. "Something's up."

O'Malley nodded. "We got reports of animals running loose at the
Lincoln Park Zoo. Witnesses say the lion cage opened itself."

"Oh great," I said. "I'll be ready in a minute."

As I started for the bedroom Jessie walked out. Thank God she was
dressed. Not that it made the situation any less awkward. She
looked from me to O'Malley and back again.

"Uh, good morning," Jessie said.

O'Malley grinned. "Good morning."

I wanted to smack that grin off his face. "I guess you two
remember each other."

Jessie nodded. If she was embarrassed it didn't show. "It's good to
see you again, Detective O'Malley."

"Yeah," O'Malley said. "Nice to see you, too."

I said to Jessie, "There's trouble at Lincoln Park Zoo. So . . ." I held
up my hands in a what-can-ya-do gesture and sighed. "Um, I
started coffee . . ."

"No time," Jessie said. She sat down on the sofa and put her shoes
on. "I have to be in court in less than an hour." She got up, grabbed
her coat and her purse then looked at me. Her smile said more than
mere words ever could.

I smiled back. "I'll call you later, okay?"

"You'd better," Jessie said. She kissed me, flicked a glance at
O'Malley, then rushed out the door.

I stared after her for a long moment then turned to O'Malley. "Not
a word."

"What?" O'Malley asked. "I wasn't going to say anything."

"Uh huh." I waited. It would come.

"So," O'Malley said, "is this thing between you and Likes Other
Squaws serious or what?"

"I'm going to get dressed now," I said.

* * * * *

By the time O'Malley and I got to Lincoln Park Zoo, the perimeter
had been secured. That meant any civilians in the park had been
evacuated and Special Unit 2 had claimed jurisdiction. There was a
mobile command vehicle parked outside the main gate and four
other unmarked vehicles around it. We parked near them and got
out.

O'Malley and I hadn't said much on the ride over. I wasn't in the
mood for his snide comments about Native Americans or my love
life. He didn't push me, either.

The captain had assembled a group of SU2 field officers in full riot
gear. That was SOP for an operation like this when a Link was on
the move. I muscled through the army of police officers with
O'Malley in tow. Captain Page nodded at us.

"Nice of you to join us," Captain Page said. He looked out over the
assembled officers. "This mission is twofold, people. Teams One
and Two will fan out across the park and subdue the released
animals. Big game is your first priority. Most of the smaller animals
don't pose an immediate threat. We do believe the goblin is still in
the park. Team Three? Find it."

The officers broke ranks and headed into the zoo. I got a headset
from one of the techs. It would keep me in touch with the mobile
command center and officers around the park. O'Malley followed
suit. We headed through the main gate together, our weapons
drawn.

We walked for a while in silence. Then O'Malley said, "You don't
have to talk about last night."

I grunted. "Of course I don't."

"But details would be nice."

I shot him a look.

"Hey, I'm a guy," O'Malley said. "I'd tell you."

That made me laugh. "Yeah. You would."

"So?"

"It was nice," I said.

"Nice?" O'Malley shook his head. "I saw her, Kate. On her worst
day she rates an oh-my-God."

I laughed. "Yeah, okay. It was fabulous. Toe curling, even."

"That can actually happen?"

"Oh yeah," I said.

Something caught my eye. Just a blur of movement. But that was
enough. I looked up and saw the door to the Primate House open
and close. The set of doors just inside opened a second later.

"Did you see that?"

"Yeah," O'Malley said. He was already on the move.

"It just went into the Primate House," I said into the headset.
"Team Three secure the exits. Make sure it doesn't get out."

I jogged after O'Malley. We stood on either side of the glass doors
leading into the Primate House.

"Ready?" O'Malley asked.

I nodded. We went in.

It was hot in there. And in my long black jacket I could really feel
it. Sweat gathered at the small of my back almost immediately. And
the smell . . . there were no words for it. Those who have been
there don't need to be told, and those who haven't could never
imagine. It smelled . . . well, like a Primate House.

There were furry creatures already on the loose as O'Malley and I
moved through. Some of them I recognized . . . squirrel monkeys,
chimpanzees. One of the little furballs ran past O'Malley. He
jumped.

"Get your stinking paws off me you damned, dirty ape," O'Malley
said.

I rolled my eyes. "That was a monkey."

"How can you tell?"

"It had a tail," I said.

"Can we cut of its paw and make a wish?"

I said, "Those never work out."

We rounded a corner and tripped over ourselves to keep from
running smack into a gorilla. It was sitting in the middle of the floor
doing something disgusting.

"And people pay to see this?" O'Malley asked.

I started to answer but something rubbed against my leg. At first I
thought it might be the monkey, but when I looked there was
nothing at my feet.

"It's here," I said.

O'Malley glanced around. "Not that we can see it."

Something moved near the orangutan habitat. It wasn't much.
Again, just a blur . . . a hint of something in the room with us. So I
fired at it. The gorilla sitting on the floor didn't like that much. It
growled and charged forward, knocking O'Malley on his ass.

"Nick!" I cried.

"Don't worry about me," O'Malley said. "Go after it!"

I nodded and started forward. The goblin could have
double-backed for all I knew, but I had to pick a direction and did.
It paid off.

When I turned the corner, an unseen force was smearing that same
thick black gunk from the Institute over a pane of glass. I fired.
Something -and I assumed it was the goblin- howled in pain. I still
couldn't see it, but there was blood on the floor now.

I followed it.

The goblin stood in the corner, in plain view now. Whatever
strength it had left wasn't enough for it to keep moving fast enough
that I couldn't see it. I fired again. Then again. The goblin screeched
in agony. But that didn't stop me from shooting off a couple more
rounds. It fell to the floor.

* * * * *

I held Jessie's hand as we walked down Wentworth Avenue in
Chinatown, peering into storefront windows, admiring the Asian
curiosities on display. There was a definite nip in the air but the
dozens of restaurants that lined the street offset the chill with a
delicious and intoxicating aroma. Though being with Jessie was
enough to keep me warm.

"How's O'Malley?" Jessie asked.

"Impossible, as always," I said. "But recovering. He should be back
at his desk in a couple of days. So that's good news."

"I have good news, too," Jessie said.

"What?"

"The DA dropped the charges in the Solider Field case."

I gave her hand a squeeze. "That's wonderful! Congratulations."

"Thanks," Jessie said. "He said there was evidence linking the fire
to incidents at The Field Museum, the Lincoln Park Zoo, and . . .
the Art Institute of Chicago."

"Imagine that," I said.

Jessie smiled. "I don't suppose you can tell me who . . . or what . . .
really started that fire?"

"Sorry," I said.

"That's all right," Jessie said with a resigned shrug. "I'll just have
accept the fact that you have to keep secrets from me."

I pulled Jessie out of the flow of pedestrian traffic and turned to
face her. "I don't like it, either. I have this incredible need to tell you
everything about me and it hurts that I can't. It's the job. I don't
have a choice. But one thing I could never keep secret is the way I
feel about you."

Jessie touched her fingers to my cheek. "That's all I need, Kate."

I kissed her, long and deep, right there in the middle of Chinatown.
Her lips were warm against mine. When we broke apart both of us
were panting for breath.

"Your client walked," I said. "That calls for a celebration."

"Absolutely," Jessie said.

I took her hand again and we continued down the street. "I know
just the place we should go, too."

"Your place?" She sounded hopeful.

"Yeah," I said. And we both laughed.
