No, madam didn't take long. Why should she ? It's a question of
going to her room, unbuttoning the blouse she was wearing, taking
it off her hands, putting on the newly stitched blouse and then
buttoning. No, no. Not even that long, because the blouse wasn't
buttoned when she entered the living room, where I waiting.

"You see, till now, everything is okay, " she said, as she drew
both the ends of her blouse towards her cleavage, without
actually buttoning it.

"Yeah, looks nice..." I said, as I closely watched the curves of
her breasts and their fittings within the cup. Within me, I was
.....oh, forget it ! I mean business.

"Have you seen the fitting closely ? From both the sides ? ...Are
you sure ?" she asked.

I looked at her. Not her, but exclusively concentrating on her
blouse and breasts. Once from the left, then from the right. Then
again from the left, then again from the right. Just to make
myself sure.

"Yes ma'am, your brea...., sorry your blouse looks nicely fitted
to your ...I mean it's nicely fitted ..." I said.

"It is, isn't it ? The problem starts now. When I button  one by
one, just see, there is a tightness." she showed me after
removing the top part (pallu/ aanchal) of her saree off her
shoulders.

The direct frontal view indeed helped me to understand what the
problem was. From the sides upto her nipples, the blouse very
closely followed the curves of her breasts, but it couldn't
follow the curves from nipples to the cleavage. It was falling
slightly short, resulting in a tightness when the buttons were
on.

The easiest option would be if she doesn't button, but I was sure
she wouldn't agree to that.

"Yeah, I can see what the problem is. But tell me madam, are
these ones fitting fine ? " I asked, while pointing to my own
nipples located on my planar surface.

"Oh yeah,..." she smiled naughtily, "you mean nipples, right ?
Yes, they are perfectly in place. Just see..."

This time, I was fully concentrating on the nipples, just like
the way a shooter concentrates on his/her target. Concentration
is very important to every profession. And as I said, I mean
business.

I understood that the nipples were nicely positioned, but the
problem started after that.

"Okay madam, I understood. I think I can correct this one with
some rework, but I would surely like to do a better work for the
next order. You said, the problem exists to some extent in the
sample blouse as well. So, I hope you wouldn't mind my taking
fresh measurements." I asked.

"Oh no, not at all. I need nicely fitted blouse. You are welcome
to take measurements off my body."

"But madam, today, I haven't come prepared with my kit. I need my
assistant too. I should come when you can spare quite sometime.
You know, measurements always takes time, if one has to do it
properly."

"Perfectly understandable. But, this week and the next one I'll
be terribly busy. So, please come a week after that,
.....emm...say, how about that thursday ?" she asked, as she
looked at her appointments dairy.

"Oh, that's not a problem, I'll be there." I assured.

I had almost two weeks before the measurement appointment. While
I continued with the gents' tailoring order, I was all the time
thinking how to improve my ladies' tailoring business.

And to do that, I started studying Geometry in my spare time
during that fortnight.

Yes, Geometry. Hey, I'm not joking ! I really did that. I am a
high school dropout (Ohhh no, you still believe Swagato was
Engineering student, good in his studies etc. etc...Bullshit ! Do
you believe in authors ? Don't ! Believe what Aziz tells you).

Despite being a high school dropout, just in those fourteen days,
I finished reading Hall and Steven's "Geometry" with lot of
interests. Not only Plane Geometry, but also Coordinate Geometry,
Solid Geometry and Mensuration. And then only I realized how
important the oft-neglected process of measurements is !

Let me explain it to you in very simple terms. No equations. If a
high school dropout understands, everyone can. These are like
very elementary geometry lessons. Condone me if you get slightly
bored, but it's vital ! Pertaining to vital statistics afterall !
So, listen carefully. I would advise you keep a pen and paper
ready with you in case you have any difficulty.

How does a tailor take measurements to stitch a blouse ?

Simple !

First, pass the measuring tape through her armpit and take the
measurement as the tape encircles her body. Fine. Say, it is
"x1".

Next, bring the measuring tape down. It should encircle her body,
including her nipples. Say, it is "x2".

Next, the tape should encircle her body where her breasts meet
the plane land. Say, it is "x3". Obviously, "x2" should be
greater than "x1" and "x3". These are fundamental constraints of
blouse making ! But, do "x1", "x2" and "x3" completely
characterize the cups ? It's not. A simple insight will make
things clear.

The above measurement doesn't discriminate between a fictitious
wedge-shaped breasts and the actual curved shaped breasts. What I
mean to say is that the curvature is completely overlooked.

Now, let's try to model a female breast. You take a sphere of
radius "R". Divide it equally into two parts by a plane that
passes through it's center. What do you get ? You are right - two
hemispheres. Now place the hemispheres on their bases and keep
one hemisphere adjacent to the other - you get a pair of female
breasts. Agreed, the model is too approximate, but isn't it
simple to start with ?

Now mark the peaks of the hemispheres so placed. No, no you don't
need to do that. Nature has already done it for you. Very
prominently.

Now follow the curved surface. Take your time. Never be in a
hurry.

How would you characterize a hemisphere ? It's so easy and
simple. The radius "R" uniquely specifies a hemisphere. Believe
me.

How do you measure "R" ? It's the distance from center to any
point on the surface, according to the definition.

How do you reach the center ? Sorry. It's just impossible. Centre
is deep inside and there is no opening, at least in this part of
the female body. One has  to derive the radius through
measurements. And it's amazingly simple. Believe me !

Take the hemisphere, the breast rather. Take a simple piece of
thread, yes, just a simple piece of thread (..because it would be
too clumsy to directly use the tape) and measure the distance
from nipple to the outer boundary of the breast. How much
distance would you traverse ? Right, one fourth of the
circumference of the sphere. Say, this distance is "d".

Now calculate this :

"d", divided by "pi/2", where the Greek letter "pi" stands for
3.14128....

What do you get ? You get "R", in an amazingly simple way.
Believe me, my formula is correct. What do you need for that ? A
thread, a measuring scale or a tape, and a breast  (I didn't
specifically say "nipple" because  breasts  always come with
nipple).

If the breast is under-developed, you have to model it by cutting
the hemisphere through a plane parallel to its base. In those
cases, the traditional measurements, plus the
"nipple-to-boundary" measurement will work fine.

But, if the  female breast is not a perfect hemisphere, this
formula won't  work. What if it is a "hemi-ellipsoid" or a curved
surface that cannot fit into any exact geometrical definitions ?
For all practical cases, it would be that way !

Then, to characterize the breast, you have to take several
nipple-to-boundary measurements, because all will not be the
same. The more the better ! That's why I told madam that the
measurement would be quite time-consuming.

So, I needed one complete fortnight to study Hall and Steven's
"Geometry" and plan for the measurements.

Then, on that day, I was ready with my kit containing a thread,
measuring tape, my order book, a pen and went to madam's house
with one of my young assistants.

"Madam, it's me, Aziz" I said, as she opened the door.

How did I take the measurements ? Aren't you curious to know ? Oh
no, not today. I'll describe it in the next part. Just be patient
!
