                   Part -1

After some three thousand four hundred and eleven days of constant
deceleration at 23 Gee's the egg shaped probe (which was roughy, give or
take a thousand tons, about the size of Mount Everest, and covered in a
thousand little blisters) finally shut down its main propulsion unit
after it had achieved a stable orbit around the outer edge of a rather
large mass of floating ice and rock, at the extreme edge of the solar
system it had been tasked by it builders to explore.

In a few seconds it then activated its onboard scientific instruments,
and started a detailed analysis of this rather remarkable ORT cloud,
which in comparison to the data gathered by its fellow probes over the
last eighty seven thousand years (at least the data it had inserted in
its memory banks some two hundred and ninety one years ago at the time
of its launch) confirmed its finding that this was the largest ORT cloud
ever recorded around a single stared system!

Further analysis confirmed that the material was made up of standard
rock, ice, and that the trace minerals and metals were in proper
proportion to its overall mass, which when compared to hypothetical
planetary bodies was estimated by the scientific computer to be enough
to make up one very large planet or two medium sized planets or three
smaller ones (and or an assorted combination of planets and moons).

Finishing its job it then activated its secondary propulsion unit, and
very slowly wormed its way thru the cloud in a very leisurely maneuver,
that took the probe some eighteen days to carry out (all the while
collecting samples and doing additional analysis) until it once again
came to rest in another stable orbit, only this time almost exactly
halfway between the outermost planet and the inner ORT cloud, at which
point one hundred and twenty three of the blisters detached themselves
and started a rather slow journey (for them) towards the waiting planets
and moons of the system before them.

Which was dictated more for the sake of any potential nervous natives of
this system who might have the means to detect and resist, than for the
sake of economy, as the probe didn't want to take even the smallest
chance that would invite an attack in the mistaken belief that it was
launching an attack on this system.

So as a result it was 47 days before the first micro probe reached the
outermost planet, which after receiving the first data stream from it
not only confirmed the probes distant observation that this was a dead
planet, but also confirmed that the planet itself was in a strange orbit
that bought it at times inside the orbit of the eighth planet, which
while having a large moon it noted with the detachment only a computer
was capable of was otherwise unremarkable in and of itself.

The seventh planet however showed signs of a highly unusual axial tilt,
which the smaller probe failed to show any obvious cause for such an
anomaly, so with mystery number two in its memory banks the probe
already had reason enough to open an OverSpace gate, but as many of the
micro probes still hadn't reported in yet it held off until it got a
more detailed picture.

The micro probes tasked to explore the sixth and fifth planets finally
reported in almost at the same time at days 94 and 95 respectively (due
to the position of the planets at that moment) that both gas giants were
unremarkable in make up and appearance, but that one of the ice covered
moons of the fifth planet did register signs of having primitive life
forms under the ice, although due to the small probes limited
instrumentation a closer examination was needed which the probe did, as
it dispatched two additional micro probes which were designed to make
planetfall, and which confirmed the initial readings.

Then it was time for mystery number three to rear its head, when the
most distantly advanced of the micro probes on its way to the inner four
planets passed thru an unobserved inner belt of planetoids and other
small asteroidal bodies, which hinted that sometime in this systems past
it would be revealed that an epic destructive event had occurred here,
which had been big enough it seemed to smash at least two planets into
chunks and disrupt at least two more in major areas.

When the probes finally reached the forth planet (at one hundred and
three days after deployment), it was found to be dead world as well, but
as the micro probes data was analyzed, it could clearly be seen that at
one time in its history planet four had large amounts of surface water
on it, which also hinted at a denser atmosphere that it did not now
posses anymore, even though the probes analysis clearly showed that the
gravity and the distance to the solar body was well within the nominal
parameters to support both.

Then it was the third planets turn, which even from its distant
observation post the probe could clearly see that this was the most
likely planet in the system to support life,so as a result it got the
majority of first wave micro probes sent to it.

Which turned out to be a good observation on its part as the data sent
back not only confirmed the probes initial analysis, but also turned up
signs(mostly from two probes that made suborbital recognizance flyovers)
of a primitive but clearly intelligent lifeform, as images sent back to
it along with other data revealed that planet three's surface was
occupied by a bipedal race of tool users, who also had apparently
mastered the limited use of thermal generation (fire)!

Realizing that it now had more than sufficient reason and data, it broke
off further analysis of the inner two planets which were obviously
incapable of supporting life, and prepared a messager capsule, as at the
same time it probed for nearby weaknesses in the Space Time continuum to
set up its moderately sized OverSpace gate, which it made ready to
deploy as well.

Thats when the probe got a massive shock to its system, when after a
brief time period of scanning the local area of space it currently
occupied, it came up with three hundred twenty one thousand nine hundred
and six weak points, in an area that should normally only have held ten
spots at the most!

Almost immediately the probes Tactical Battle Computer kicked in when
the answer for so many weak points in the Space Time continuum,
especially in so small an area could only have been explained by one
cause, Somebody had apparently in the far past used AntiGravity Weapons
in this system!

Making a second wider and more detailed scan, the probe found evidence
that there were major weak spots as well in the astroid belt between
planets four and five, and in fact the whole damn system showed a
general weakness, which obviously wouldn't take much strain to
completely collapse existence in this part of the galaxy!

After finally locating a region of stable space some 19.85 million miles
from the outer ORT cloud, the probe once again engaged its secondary
propulsion unit, and at full power this time made for that spot which it
finally reached in a little over 187 hours.

At which point the probe excreted (much like a tube of toothpaste does)
a long line of a greyish metallic looking substance, which on its own
wrapped itself into a circle at which point another batch of the
blisters detached themselves from the probe, and then very carefully
alighted themselves onto the ring at preselected intervals.

The next thing that happened was the probe took up station at exactly a
distance of one thousand seventy eight miles from the ring, at which
point it powered up and then transmitted 67.89% of its total power at
the ring, which managed to open up a hole roughly big enough to allow a
55 gallon drum to pass thru, at which point the probe fired off the
message capsule, which a few minutes later disappeared into the blacker
than black hole that was a very small glimpse into OverSpace.

At which point the probe quickly cut the power transmission to conserve
itself, then it quickly engaged its secondary thrusters one last time,
and slowly backed away from the ring until it reached a station keeping
point some ninety five thousand miles distance, at which point it once
again redirected its antenna and other instruments towards the system in
order to collect the data still being transmitted from the micro probes,
and then it simply waited for its masters to arrive!

To be continued.....
