at least their understanding of it. Almost to a man 
the guests seemed to be dismissive of young people, 
and I suddenly realised what was going on when I 
looked at Derek and Doreen, and caught them 
grinning directly at me. I grinned back, tilted my 
head at the one that was talking youth down, got a 
nod from Derek and another broad grin from Doreen 
and decided to wade in all guns firing. "The 
trouble with young people today is they have to 
have everything done for them, they have no sense 
of responsibility, no self control, and could never 
stand on their own two feet. They are so gutless 
they have to go around in gangs, and hang around 
dirty drug ridden places like that disco club in 
town. *


Before I could respond I heard a gasp behind me, 
turned and saw Kelly, Lisa and Susan all looking 
ready to tear the woman to pieces. "Daddy do we 
have to put this?" said Sue "No darling, and I 
agree I've never heard such a lot of garbage 
spouted by someone who should know better" I 
replied and turned to face the group I was standing 
with. "On what basis do you make the assumption 
that the disco club is either dirty, drug ridden or 
run by gangs" I asked Mary, the female lawyer who 
had been speaking. "Come on, you made a statement, 
now give us the evidence." She blushed then her 
husband said "I know that a client of ours was 
beaten up and forced to leave town some months ago 
by the ruling gang. We tried to get them charged 
but the police did nothing about it." I heard the 
girls gasp again and Kelly said quietly "No Daddy, 
please don't say anything" I turned and said quite 
loud, "Sorry darling, but we have to put these 
morons straight about things." I then turned and 
faced the group again, "Was your client Mark 
Anderson by any chance?" I asked, the guy looked at 
his wife then nodded. "Right" I said forcefully 
"Let me tell you about your client, first of all he 
took a sixteen year old girl out to the country 
park and into a secluded area off the beaten track. 
He then proceeded to rip her panties off and 
attempt to rape her." "What utter rubbish, she was 
willing and just got scared that's all. It was the 
four brutes that chased him off that tried to rape 
her, not Mark" said Mary, "If we had been able to 
find them we could have proved it too." I looked at 
her and said as scornfully as I could, "You poor 
pathetic fool. Do you want me to tell you who the 
four brutes were?" she turned red with anger at my 
comment, then said "Yes, so I can have them 
arrested." I smiled and turned to the girls, "Come 
here please girls, so Mary can get a good look at 
all of us before she calls the police" I turned to 
Mary and said "OK my dear, why not call the cops 
and have me and these three girls arrested. Just in 
case you didn't  know, the girl that was attacked 
is a great friend of Susan, and we're the ones that 
ran Mark off and took her home. I should also tell 
you that a week or so later your innocent client 
assaulted my youngest step daughter, then caused 
the fight that put him in hospital just because he 
objected to being asked to leave the club." Mary 
turned so pale I thought she was going to faint, 
"You're lying" she gasped then took a pace back as 
Jenny stepped up and said, "Don't you call my 
husband and daughters liars, I won't stand for it. 
Just believe what Jack has told you because it's 
true." "And another thing you said is also a load 
of garbage too" I continued "That statement about 
youngsters needing everything done for them. Do you 
know about the car maintenance club that's being 
funded by local businesses, and city hall?" "Of 
course, I helped get it started, and I know it's 
only working because there's a team of adults 
running it, you ask Derek and Doreen, they'll tell 
you." I turned to Derek grinning broadly, "Is that 
right Derek, do you know who's running that club?" 
"Err.. I thought it was you Jack, don't you spend 
all your spare time there?" I turned to Mary again 
"Sorry Mary, you put your foot in it again. As 
Derek said I'm one of the adults, the other is an 
accountant on loan to us, between us we put in 
about two hours a week, just to make sure that what 
the kids do is legal. They run the club, they make 
all the decisions, they control the members, they 
got all the relevant permissions, in fact Susan 
here arranged for the police to keep the silent 
alarm system connected which caught an arsonist 
trying to burn the place down because he'd been 
thrown out of the club for misconduct. He's not one 
of your clients is he?" Mary  blenched and I just 
shook my head. "To go on to another of your points 
about kids being gutless, I assume you mean they 
have no old fashioned courage?" Mary nodded 
silently, "Have you heard anyone mention a gang 
called the Avenging Angels?" I asked quietly and 
she frowned as she shook her head, by this time the 
whole group were just standing there stunned at the 
way I was ripping into one of their number. One of 
the men named Stewart said "Why should we be 
bothered with the names of gangs of youths, that's 
for the police to deal with, not us." Suddenly Mary 
put her hand to her mouth as she looked at the 
girls as they stood behind me, each wearing their 
pins. "Oh my god, you're them aren't you?" she 
gasped as she blushed bright red.*


Stewart turned to face Mary, "They're who Mary?" he 
said "These girls, they're the Avenging Angels, 
don't you remember we were asked to contribute to 
having those four pins made to be presented to them 
months ago?" she replied. Stewart grunted "I 
couldn't be bothered with little things like that, 
after all what did they do to deserve something 
like that?" All of a sudden the people standing 
close to him inched away as Derek and Sandi came 
forward, Sandi standing beside Sue and putting her 
arm round her as Derek said in a quiet even voice, 
"What did they do Stewart, I'll tell you what they 
did, these three girls overpowered a gunman that 
had just shot Jack here, then my future daughter in 
law helped knock him unconscious, well kick him 
unconscious actually, then they tied him up 'til 
the police arrived. This gunman had already raped 
three young women, and robbed four families at 
least before he tried the same with Jack and his 
family. He's now doing twenty to life. They did 
what the police had spent almost a year trying to 
do. If that's not courage I don't know what is." 
I went up to Mary and held her hands, "Mary, I'm 
sorry I tore into you like that but everything you 
said reflected directly on my family. You're so 
wrong in all that you said I just wonder where you 
get your ideas from." She grinned, "No Jack, I'm 
the one who should be apologising to the girls, I 
must have sounded like the worst kind of bigot 
there is. How can I make amends?" Lisa stepped 
forward, "Easily, come with us tomorrow and have a 
look round the car club, then come to the disco 
club one evening in the week. After that you can 
make up your own mind about the young people of 
this town. All we need is the trust of people of 
your generation and we can do wonders, ask Daddy 
and Richard's father." Lisa the turned bright red 
and went back to stand with Jenny and Kelly. I 
smiled as I handed Mary one of my cards "Ten 
o'clock tomorrow morning Mary, the girls will be 
waiting to go to the club to learn a little more 
about vehicle maintenance, don't be late." She 
smiled, "I won't Jack I promise." Suddenly the 
tension went out of the air and Derek and Doreen's 
guests started to talk to Jenny and the girls with 
the exception of Stewart who seemed to be getting 
the cold shoulder from his peers. Derek came up to 
me and whispered to see him in his library. When we 
were sitting down with a drink Derek looked at me 
and said "Jack, I'm sorry you got into that, I 
didn't anticipate things getting so heated. I just 
couldn't believe Mary said those things, she's such 
a pleasant person as a rule." I shook my head and 
grinned, "I should be apologising for insulting 
your guests Derek, except I get  the feeling you 
enjoyed having them taken down a peg or two. Who's 
that Stewart character, he sounded like a real 
asshole to me?" Derek chuckled, "That's just what 
he is Jack, he's so arrogant he's usually only 
tolerated, after tonight he won't even be that 
welcome. I want to thank you for doing my dirty 
work, and tell you that Doreen and I enjoyed it 
enormously. Now let's go and join the party."  We 
did and were surprised to see that Stewart had 
left, citing urgent business he'd forgotten about. 
Two of Derek and Doreen's friends cornered me and 
asked me about setting up the car club, and what I 
got out of it, "You must be getting quite a decent 
salary, and the expenses must add up as well, are 
they deductible?" What my expression was I couldn't 
tell you but both of them went quite pale as I 
looked at them. "It's no wonder this town's in the 
state it's in" I said scornfully, and not too 
quietly, "All parasites like you can do is look to 
see how much you can screw out of the system, or 
skim off the top. Can't you get it into your thick 
arrogant skulls there are people that do things for 
something other than a fat fee or four hour expense 
account lunch. I help these kids because people 
like you keep doing them down. I want them to 
succeed while you want to put them away because 
they don't conform to your way of thinking. It's 
about time you made contact with the adults and 
rulers of the future before you become part of 
their past." *


There was dead silence, then a steady clapping of 
hands and I turned to see Derek and Doreen, Jenny 
and the girls and a couple of Derek and Doreen's 
guests, including Mary and her husband applauding 
me, much to the discomfort of the two guys I'd been 
berating. As I stood there Derek came and stood 
beside me, waiting 'til the two guests behind us 
went and hid at the back of the crowd. "Friends, at 
least those that still are my friends, it seems 
that most of us have been put in our place this 
evening by Jack and his family. I invited them 
because of their relationship to my sons future 
wife, but also because I hoped something like what 
has happened, would happen. I would also like to 
suggest that like Mary, all of us take a look at 
what is being done in the name of this town by 
people like Jack. How many of you have the courage 
to go and beard these young lions in their Den and 
see what they do with the money some of you put up 
to support the project I convinced you was worth 
while?" I noticed that most of them nodded, and 
when asked by Derek I explained exactly where they 
should meet us, at the gas station beside the 
workshop rather than travel in convoy from our 
home. A little later I confirmed with Mary that she 
should still come to the house and go down with the 
girls in their car. 
We made our excuses at about midnight and said 
lengthier goodbyes than usual with many of Derek 
and Doreen's guests wanting to further our 
acquaintance. Derek was the last and he just said a 
heartfelt "Thanks very much Jack, and you girls, 
you were wonderful, especially when you all got 
angry at the same time. It just goes to show people 
can't afford to upset the Avenging Angels at any 
time" and he was still chuckling as I pulled away.
"Daddy, that was the worst party I've ever been 
to. The people were so rude I almost swore at them, 
especially that Stewart guy, what  happened to him, 
he just disappeared?" said Lisa. "I think he said a 
little too much at the wrong time darling" said 
Jenny with a smile, "I also think he'll have to 
find some new friends, those I spoke to couldn't 
apologise enough for what he said. I must admit 
though Daddy certainly put them all very firmly in 
their place, didn't he?" A chorus of agreement ran 
round the back seat, "Do you think any of them will 
come tomorrow Daddy?" asked Kelly as we neared 
home. "Oh I think so, Derek managed to put them in 
a position where they'd have a job staying away 
without losing face, and that means more to them 
than anything else. Look what happened to Stewart 
tonight." 
Later I knocked on the door to the girls bedroom, 
Lisa called come in and I went and sat on Sue's bed 
as they finished undressing and getting into bed. 
"Girls, I'm sorry if I embarrassed you tonight, I 
didn't mean to but I couldn't stand there and allow 
those words to go unchallenged." Sue came and sat 
beside me kissing me lovingly, "To be honest Daddy, 
if you hadn't said what you did, when you did, it 
would have been me telling them off not you." "And 
me" said Lisa "Me too" added Kelly. "Daddy we 
should be thanking you for coming to our defense so 
quickly, just like a knight in shining armour" 
chuckled Sue as she slid under the bedclothes. I 
bent over her and kissed her "I love you Daddy" she 
said quietly "And I love you my brave girl, not 
only gunmen but lawyers too, that takes courage, 
believe me" and I tucked her in and went over to 
Lisa's bed. As I bent over Lisa she put her arms 
round me and pulled me down for a big kiss, "I'm 
glad you said what you did Daddy, I never realised 
just how stupid educated people can be sometimes. I 
hope I never get to be as small minded as that." I 
shook me head "Not a hope darling, you're too 
intelligent. Never mix education with intelligence, 
they're completely different things." Kelly sat up 
to kiss me, hugging me tight at the same time, 
"Will they understand what's happening at the 
workshop tomorrow Daddy?" she said. I shook my head 
"Probably not, you girls will just have to explain 
it all to them. Spend a little time in the morning 
thinking what to say that will  impress them, and 
make sure you  know what you're talking about or 
know one of the guys that can explain it better 
than you, OK?" They all nodded as they lay down 
waiting for me to say good night and put out the 
light, "Goodnight darlings, and sweet dreams" I 
said, and put them in darkness then closed the 
door.*


Next morning at just after eight and just as we 
were finishing breakfast Sarah came over to see Sue 
and ask for a lift to the workshop. I said I'd take 
her and Sue in my car as the girls would have a 
full load with Mary and her husband, if he came. He 
did, and I was glad to see both of them were in 
casual clothes and sneakers, perhaps they were 
human after all I whispered to Lisa as they walked 
up the drive. This made Lisa laugh and Mary saw her 
at her best as she approached. I invited Mary in 
and introduced her to Sarah, "Is she the one..." 
Mary started to say and stopped as she saw Sarah 
begin to pale. I put my arm round Sarah and said 
softly "It's all right darling, Mary is a friend 
and will keep quiet, I promise." I turned back to 
Mary and said quietly "Only about six people  know 
what happened to Sarah, and we do our best to keep 
it very private so Sarah doesn't get hounded by 
nosy Parker's, so please say nothing about it any 
more." Mary smiled at Sarah, "Silent as the grave 
Sarah, promise." Sarah smiled and went to see if 
Sue was ready to go. As we sat finishing our coffee 
Mary said "Sarah seems to be coping well with the 
trauma Jack, how did her parents manage that, 
through counselling?" I shook my head "No, through 
having a close family, good friends, and being with 
others that suffered the same sort of thing and got 
over it. It's so discrete I can't talk about it 
without a risk of upsetting her therapy, just let's 
say it's working and leave it at that please Mary." 
A few minutes later we were getting in to the 
allocated vehicles and were on our way to meet our 
visitors. When we got there we found we were the 
first so I took Mary and her husband Don and 
introduced them to Mark and John and asked them to 
do the five cent tour. They were just finished and 
sitting in the office while Sarah served coffee 
when Sue came in to say Derek and the rest had 
arrived. "OK darling, how about if you divide them 
into three, each of you take a group and give them 
a tour. You worked out where to start and what to 
say didn't you?" Sue nodded but looked apprehensive 
till I kissed her on the cheek and whispered "Show 
those arrogant so and so's what young people can do 
darling, they're only human the same as you, but 
not quite so bright." Sue grinned at me "OK Daddy, 
we'll do our best" and skipped across the workshop 
to where Kelly and Lisa were keeping the group 
busy. I sat and watched as Kelly told the visitors 
to split up and allocated Lisa and Sue to take a 
group each to their starting point. I also noticed 
that Derek was making his way to the office as the 
tour started. "What's the matter Derek, scared of a 
couple of little girls" I said as he came and sat 
down beside me, he laughed "That Kelly can 
certainly organise things, I felt like a schoolboy 
for a minute. I'd be interested in what the group 
has to say when they've finished the tour?" "I know 
this much Derek" said Mary "I was certainly wrong 
in all that I said last night. I'm very impressed 
with what Jack's done here, and even more impressed 
with what these lads are doing on the management 
side of things." "Like I told you Mary, I did very 
little except give someone the idea it might be 
worth supporting this. I also convinced the Mayor 
he could get some political capital by helping to 
sponsor the whole thing. He can't lose, if it 
succeeds he takes the credit, if it fails it wasn't 
his fault but he did try his best. A win-win 
situation no politician can ignore." Derek and Mary 
looked at me in astonishment, then both burst out 
laughing. When they eventually stopped, and had 
dried the tears in their eyes I said "OK , what's 
so funny about me conning the Mayor?" "Jack, do you 
know there are dozens of people have been trying 
for weeks to find out why the Mayor was prepared to 
put so  much time effort and  money, as well as a 
city hall employee at your disposal" said Derek  
"He's been saying for years how unreliable the 
youth of today are. We now find you made the 
ultimate offer he couldn't refuse, just wait 'til 
this gets out, people will be wanting you to run 
for office yourself." "They can forget that" I said 
firmly, "I've got a good job and a close family, 
what do I want with politics." *


Before either of them could answer we saw that the 
tour had come to an end and the three groups had 
come together in front of the office window, I went 
round to the rest room to see if George had started 
his tutorial only to find a note on the door saying 
it would be starting after lunch. I asked Kelly to 
bring all the visitors into the rest room, sat Mark 
John, Paul and the girls at the front, stood in 
front of them and said "OK folks, I blasted your 
ears last night, the girls have shown you round 
this morning, I would now like some feedback from 
at least some of you, so the ones running the club 
get a chance to answer your criticisms. Who's going 
to start?" A voice from the back said "What made 
you want to start the club in the first place 
Jack?" "Nothing to do with the running of the 
place, but as a starter I'll answer it. I didn't 
want my driveway covered in grease and oil stains 
after these three lads taught these three girls, 
plus one other, how to maintain their car. I gave 
them my old car on the promise that they learn how 
to maintain it, they have." "But surely Jack they 
could have learned quicker by going to specialised 
night school classes?" We all chuckled then Lisa 
stood up smiled and said "Yes but it was more fun 
this way". This brought a ripple of laughter that 
stopped when someone else got up and said "But what 
does it achieve apart from giving a few youths free 
facilities to cheat businessmen out of some trade?" 
Before I could say anything Mark stood up, looked 
the guy in the eye and said "How many youths do you 
think we have as members?" he looked round grinned 
"From what we saw about ten, and some of them were 
working on real wrecks" he sneered. Mark sneered 
back at him, "It  might interest you to know, 
though I doubt it, we have over a hundred members,
fifty five run their own vehicles and use this 
facility to maintain their vehicle correctly with 
professional advice. The remainder are like those 
lads working on the wrecks, as you call them. 
They come here to learn how to work safely, to 
repair and maintain vehicles correctly and 
generally look after their own motors when they can 
afford to get one. As for your remark about us 
cheating businessmen out of legitimate trade, this 
workshop is rented to us by local vehicle repair 
businessmen, one of whom is sitting in front of 
you. You see he, and others like him, wouldn't get 
our business anyway, we'd still do in on the 
roadside as we used to. But come the time we get to 
be family men we're more likely to go to someone 
that supported us now than someone that's 
constantly putting us down." Mark sat down and 
suddenly blushed as Derek started to applaud him, 
and others joined in. When the applause had stopped 
another voice asked "How much has all this cost, we 
only agreed to one hundred thousand dollars, so 
don't come back for more will you." I looked at 
Derek and frowned, he just gave a quick shake of 
his head, so I stood up and said, "But if we don't 
have enough money we'll have to close". "That's 
just bad luck then, you still didn't answer me 
question, how much money have you got left?" I 
looked hard at him and suddenly realised he was one 
of those accusing me of skimming cash off the top. 
"Do I have to tell you right now?" I asked looking 
worried, and he and his buddy grinned and said 
"Definitely, we want to know what you've done with 
all the public money entrusted to you." Derek stood 
up, "Jack, you don't actually need to answer that 
question at such short notice, I'm sure we can give 
you time to get your books straight." The two 
assholes stood up and began to whip the group into 
a call for me to answer their question so, holding 
my hands up for silence I said "OK, I'll answer the 
question, but I don't think you will like what I'm 
going to say." I turned to John and asked him for 
the file he was holding but he shook his head then 
stood up. "I'm sorry gentlemen and ladies but as 
treasurer it's my responsibility to answer 
questions on financial matters." He then started to 
open the file but was stopped by a shout from the 
back, "Why can't Bowman answer for his own 
embezzlement instead of leaving a boy to cover up 
for him?" and before anyone else could say a word 
Derek stood up and said in a loud voice "Jack, if 
you want to issue a writ for slander, Doreen will 
take you case on a ten percent basis, that should 
keep us well into retirement."*


"When can you start Derek, can I come and see you 
on Monday morning please?" I replied "Ten o'clock 
OK?" Derek said "Fine with me" I responded then 
turned to John and said "Please carry on, and I'm 
sorry about the interruption" then sat down. "Right 
gentlemen and ladies, to date we have paid out one 
dollar peppercorn rent on the building, five 
hundred dollars for an equipment safety 
certificate, one thousand dollars insurance, five 
hundred dollars for a building survey, two hundred 
dollars for all office equipment to be overhauled, 
we have set aside fifteen thousand dollars for our 
mechanics salary, although that might be a little 
too much we decided to err on the generous side. We 
spent another five hundred dollars on increased 
security after an arson attempt. The final item is 
one hundred dollars for membership stationary, 
cards, application forms and so on. That's a 
total of seventeen thousand eight hundred and one 
dollars. That leaves eighty-two thousand one 
hundred and ninety-nine dollars in a special high 
interest account negotiated for us by Kelly and 
Lisa that is bringing in just over eighty 
dollars per month, that's just less than a 
thousand dollars  in a full year, and it's tax 
free. This  means that with a little luck by the 
end of the first year we should have spent less 
than twenty percent of what was allocated to us. 
Further years may be a little worse but not by 
much. What I haven't yet included in the figures is 
the money raised by subscriptions, that will go a 
good way to paying the utilities. Again I've been 
unable to include them in the current figures as we 
have no idea what the figure is until the end of 
this month. Are there any questions?" One of the 
idiots stood up again and said "I don't believe a 
word of it and I demand an audit of the books 
immediately." Susan stood up and I could see she 
was furious as she went and stood up close to the 
guy on his feet, "It sounds to me like you're 
calling us all liars. I don't like that, and I 
don't see why we should put up with it" she walked 
over to Derek and said very calmly "Can we sue him 
for defamation of character or something, he said 
he didn't believe what John said, that's the same 
as saying he's lied isn't it?" Derek nodded "Yes 
Susan it is, do you want to sue him at the same 
time as your Daddy?" Sue nodded "Can we all do it 
together, Mark John Kelly and Lisa, after all we're 
all responsible for running the club so if one is a 
cheat and a liar, we all are." One of Derek's 
friends sitting close by said "Sounds to me like a 
nice neat case with lots of reliable witnesses 
Derek, shouldn't take up much time at all, in and 
out inside a day I should think, shall I start 
preparing the paperwork?" It seems he worked in the 
same partnership as Doreen. Derek nodded "Please, 
and issue subpoenas for everyone in the room at the 
same time." The two trouble makers left very 
quickly and as they closed the door behind them I 
stood up and said "If any of you want to see the 
full accounts, they're available in the office of 
Mr. Joseph Ward at city hall, my office is next to 
his and you are free to inspect any files you want, 
on the understanding they're private and 
confidential and should be treated as such. I would 
also like to say I fully intend to take those two 
assholes to the cleaners, not because of what they 
said about me, but because they impugned the honour 
and honesty of my daughters and their friends, that 
I will not tolerate." Once more a ripple of 
applause ran round the room and when it was 
finished Derek said "I think we've seen enough 
folks, any final questions?" there being none our 
visitors all got up and filed out of the restroom 
many of them speaking words of encouragement to the 
kids as they passed them. Derek waited 'til last 
and as I walked with him to his car he asked "Do 
you really want to take action against those two 
Jack?" I stopped him for a minute, "Derek, if you 
weren't joking about Doreen doing it on a ten percent
basis, I'm not joking about taking action, 
they really pissed me off last night when they 
accused me of skimming money off the top. Today was 
worse as they were attacking the girls and their 
friends, calling them thieves. What have they got 
against us, that's what I can't understand" Derek 
grinned at me "They opposed allocating the money 
for this project on the grounds that it would be 
siphoned off by you and the kids as soon as you got 
your hands on it. They don't like to be proved 
wrong so lost their cool, and put their heads in a 
nice tight noose. Let's go for it Jack, and ten 
percent is enough."*


Apart from telling Jenny about what happened, and 
having Kelly and Lisa confirm it when she didn't 
believe it I thought no more about what had 
happened until Monday. Just before lunch I received 
a call from Doreen to see her in her office and 
when I got there she gave me some papers to sign, 
"This is just to confirm I'm your attorney, and 
authorises me to act for you in the case we're 
bringing, I'll call you again when we have some 
idea as to what the timetable is, OK?" "Whatever 
you say Doreen, I'll leave it all to you, just tell 
me what to do and when. Errr.. just what are we 
asking for anyway, apart from an apology?" Doreen 
grinned, "Only 2 million dollars, we won't get it 
but half would be  nice don't you think?" I stood 
there dumbfounded, "You're joking of course, aren't 
you?" I gasped. Doreen shook her head "No Jack, 
I've had a talk with colleagues and under the 
circumstances that could be actually awarded, it 
depends on the judge. Don't worry about it Jack, 
just leave it to us, we're going to enjoy this more 
than you, believe me." So I did leave it the Doreen 
and her firm. In fact I forgot about it completely 
with the events of the week. 
On Wednesday afternoon Vera came round to have a 
coffee with Jenny. I was home working on one of my 
confidential projects until Jenny came in and 
disturbed me, "Jack darling, could we come and have 
a word, Vera has something to tell us." I closed 
down and set the computer to start a backup routine 
as I took my coffee to the sofa where I sat 'til 
Vera and Jenny came and sat each side of me. "I 
think Dave is going to have words with you Jack" 
said Vera, "He thinks you're giving Sarah too many 
ideas about dubious sexual practices." I frowned at
